Dietary guidelines universally advise adherence to plant-based diets. Plant-based foods confer considerable health benefits, partly attributable to their abundant micronutrient (e.g., polyphenol) content. Interest in polyphenols is largely focused on the contribution of their antioxidant activity to the prevention of various disorders, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Polyphenols are classified into groups, such as stilbenes, flavonoids, phenolic acids, lignans and others. Lignans, which possess a steroid-like chemical structure and are defined as phytoestrogens, are of particular interest to researchers. Traditionally, health benefits attributed to lignans have included a lowered risk of heart disease, menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis and breast cancer. However, the intake of naturally lignan-rich foods varies with the type of diet. Consequently, based on the latest humans' findings and gathered information on lignan-rich foods collected from Phenol Explorer database this review focuses on the potential health benefits attributable to the consumption of different diets containing naturally lignan-rich foods. Current evidence highlight the bioactive properties of lignans as human health-promoting molecules. Thus, dietary intake of lignan-rich foods could be a useful way to bolster the prevention of chronic illness, such as certain types of cancers and cardiovascular disease.

Circulating Amino Acids and Risk of Peripheral Artery Disease in the PREDIMED Trial

Cristina Razquin, Miguel Ruiz-Canela, Estefania Toledo, Clary B. Clish, Marta Guasch-Ferre, Jesus F. Garcia-Gavilan, Clemens Wittenbecher, Angel Alonso-Gomez, Montse Fito, Liming Liang, Dolores Corella, Enrique Gomez-Gracia, Ramon Estruch, Miquel Fiol, Jose M. Santos-Lozano, Luis Serra-Majem, Emilio Ros, Fernando Aros, Jordi Salas-Salvado, Frank B. Hu, Miguel A. Martinez-Gonzalez

Summary: The study examines the associations between baseline levels of plasma amino acids and subsequent risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD). It also investigates the potential modifying effect of a nutritional intervention with the Mediterranean diet. The findings suggest that certain amino acids and their pathways may serve as biomarkers for PAD risk, and the Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil offers a protective effect against PAD.

Emerging Role of Plant-Based Dietary Components in Post-Translational Modifications Associated with Colorectal Cancer

Carmen Rodriguez-Garcia, Francisco Gutierrez-Santiago

Summary: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common cancer with modifiable risk factors including diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking. Natural dietary components have shown chemopreventive activity in CRC through modulation of cellular processes. Post-translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins associated with CRC have gained interest as inappropriate modification is linked to carcinogenesis. This review collects and analyzes the main PTMs associated with CRC, explores the relationship between different proteins susceptible to inappropriate PTMs, and reviews the literature on the role of plant-based dietary compounds in modulating CRC-associated PTMs. The review suggests that plant-based dietary components can correct inappropriate PTMs and promote apoptosis in tumor cells.

Summary: The World Health Organization estimates that one fifth of university students have experienced major depressive disorder at some point in their lives. Low omega-3 fatty acid and vitamin D levels, both nutrients found in fish, have been linked to depression. A study on Spanish university students found that a lower consumption of fish is associated with a higher incidence of depression, but other social factors of the student may also influence the development of the disorder.

Summary: Biofilms are living microorganism communities that pose a threat to the healthcare sector due to their association with health-related infections. This review provides an overview of biofilms and their formation, focusing on their relevance in biomedicine and advancements in materials to prevent or control biofilm formation. Biofilms are aggregates of cells in an extracellular matrix, offering protection to microorganisms in unfavorable environments. Staphylococcus spp., Escherichia spp., and Candida spp. are the most commonly reported microorganisms forming biofilms in medical implants and devices. In recent years, biofilms have been linked to health-associated infections and deaths globally. Smart, functional polymers show promise in combating biofilms through modification or synthesis of new materials.
