'Spikelet stop' determines the maximum yield potential stage in barley

Venkatasubbu Thirulogachandar, Thorsten Schnurbusch

Summary: Research suggests that the maximum yield potential stage in barley may be different from the awn primordium stage, and needs to be determined by observing the shape of the inflorescence meristem. The time to reach the maximum yield potential stage varies among different barley genotypes and growth conditions, indicating their significant roles in determining yield potential. The maximum yield potential stage and the time to reach it can be utilized to assess yield potential in barley.

Strategies of grain number determination differentiate barley row types

Venkatasubbu Thirulogachandar, Ravi Koppolu, Thorsten Schnurbusch

Summary: This study investigated the interactions of different yield components in barley varieties, revealing differences in grain number determination between two-rowed and six-rowed barley. In two-rowed barley, grain number is strongly influenced by PSN, while in six-rowed barley, it is associated with SSL. Additionally, the disparity in grain number determination between barley row types may be due to the fertility of lateral spikelets.

Evolution of inflorescence branch modifications in cereal crops

Ravi Koppolu, Shulin Chen, Thorsten Schnurbusch

Summary: Grasses are common in our daily lives and contribute significantly to our staple food intake. Evolutionary forces have shaped grass adaptability, inflorescence architecture, and reproductive success. This study provides basic information on grass evolution and inflorescence structures, and discusses the genetic pathways and regulation of several inflorescence types.

Spikelet abortion in six-rowed barley is mainly influenced by final spikelet number, with potential spikelet number acting as a suppressor trait

Roop Kamal, Quddoos H. Muqaddasi, Yusheng Zhao, Thorsten Schnurbusch

Summary: A significant genotypic variation in spikelet abortion was observed in a panel of six-rowed spring barley accessions. The potential spikelet number and final spikelet number were found to explain 93% of the phenotypic variability for spikelet abortion, with the former acting as a suppressor trait that magnifies the effect of the latter. Asian accessions displayed the lowest spikelet abortion, suggesting the presence of favorable alleles for breeding programs.

The barley mutant multiflorus2.b reveals quantitative genetic variation for new spikelet architecture

Ravi Koppolu, Guojing Jiang, Sara G. Milner, Quddoos H. Muqaddasi, Twan Rutten, Axel Himmelbach, Yu Guo, Nils Stein, Martin Mascher, Thorsten Schnurbusch

Summary: The spikelet indeterminacy and supernumerary spikelet phenotypes in the barley multiflorus2.b mutant exhibit polygenic inheritance. Major QTLs for these phenotypes were identified on chromosomes 2H and 6H. The co-location of QTLs for lateral spikelet indeterminacy and central spikelet supernumerary phenotypes suggests a potential regulation by a single genetic factor. Further research into the genes underlying these QTLs will contribute to understanding yield formation in small grain cereals.

Genome-Wide Association Study of Salt Tolerance-Related Traits during Germination and Seedling Development in an Intermedium-Spike Barley Collection

Mohammed A. Sayed, Andreas Maurer, Thomas Schmutzer, Thorsten Schnurbusch, Andreas Boerner, Mats Hansson, Klaus Pillen, Helmy M. Youssef

Summary: Increased salinity due to climatic change is a major factor affecting global crop production. This study identified SNP markers associated with germination and seedling development in barley under salinity treatment, as well as identified salt-tolerant accessions. The results provide a basis for improving salt tolerance breeding programs in barley.

Exploring the trade-off between individual fitness and community performance of wheat crops using simulated canopy shade

Guy Golan, Ragavendran Abbai, Thorsten Schnurbusch

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between individual plant fitness and community performance in wheat crops by studying the phenotypes of introgression lines carrying chromosome segments of wild emmer. The study found that responses to canopy shade resemble responses to high density and play a significant role in both individual plant and community performance. The grain number per spike and its persistence under shade were identified as important attributes for productive communities and should be considered as breeding targets in early-generation selection.

Grain yield trade-offs in spike-branching wheat can be mitigated by elite alleles affecting sink capacity and post-anthesis source activity

Ragavendran Abbai, Guy Golan, C. Friedrich H. Longin, Thorsten Schnurbusch

Summary: This study investigated the effect of source-sink strength on inflorescence architecture in spike-branching wheat. A new modifier QTL for spike branching was identified, which was associated with increased grain number per spikelet and delayed flag leaf senescence rate.

Femaleness for improving grain yield potential and hybrid production in barley

Yongyu Huang, Thorsten Schnurbusch

Summary: Homeotic genes in barley, HvSL1 and HvMADS16, have been identified to cause stamen-to-carpel conversions, resulting in multiple ovary phenotypes. The presence of fertile supernumerary carpels in the hvsl1 mutants offers potential for hybrid grain production and increased grain yield.
