This paper summarises the detailed information on catch, fork length, weight, sex and maturity of alfonsinos Beryx splendens and Beryx decadactylus collected from targeted surveys in Azores waters, complemented by fishery data, over the past c. 20 years. To date, it was not possible to define if the Azorean component of the population can be considered as a discrete local management unit. The reason for this is the lack of available information for these resources covering the entire spatial distribution of the species in the North Atlantic Ocean. Additionally, there are some conflicts between the different genetic results available, poor understanding about the species movements and data from the Azores show some discrepancies in aspects of reproduction. Consequently, there is no analytical assessment for this resource and the stock of Beryx spp. is currently managed based on the precautionary approach. Outputs of recent analyses are presented in this study and possible assumptions and strategies for the assessment are discussed.

Contributions to Management Strategies in the NE Atlantic Regarding the Life History and Population Structure of a Key Deep-Sea Fish (Mora Moro)

Regis Santos, Wendell Medeiros-Leal, Osman Crespo, Ana Novoa-Pabon, Mario Pinho

Summary: The scarcity of continental shelf and epipelagic oceanic fishes has led to commercial fishing in deeper waters, resulting in the increasing capture of vulnerable deep-sea species. Detailed information on population traits of these species is essential to reduce the impacts of fishing. The common mora has become the main deep-sea species caught in the Northeast Atlantic, showing vulnerability to overfishing due to its biological characteristics.

Biological Knowledge of Thornback Ray (Raja clavata) from the Azores: Improving Scientific Information for the Effectiveness of Species-Specific Management Measures

Regis Santos, Wendell Medeiros-Leal, Ana Novoa-Pabon, Osman Crespo, Mario Pinho

Summary: Sharks, rays, and skates are increasingly recognized as endangered due to their life-history characteristics, fishing pressure, and habitat degradation, with the thornback ray Raja clavata being one of the most economically important in Northwest European seas. The study analyzed approximately 25 years of data to improve understanding of habitat preferences, spatial distribution, growth patterns, sex ratios, mortality rates, and reproduction of the species. Results showed that Raja clavata is mainly caught at depths up to 250 m, with females being larger and more abundant than males, and having a long lifespan, large size, slow growth, and low natural mortality.

Performance of length-based assessment in predicting small-scale multispecies fishery sustainability

Wendell Medeiros-Leal, Regis Santos, Ualerson I. I. Peixoto, Morgan Casal-Ribeiro, Ana Novoa-Pabon, Michael F. F. Sigler, Mario Pinho

Summary: Small-scale fisheries play a critical role in food security and contribute to nearly half of reported global fish catches. However, the status of most small-scale fisheries stocks is still poor. In this study, three different length-based assessment methods were applied to predict fisheries stock sustainability in the Azores, and the results showed that 45% of the stocks were classified as sustainable, 33% as possible rebuilding/overfished, and 22% as overfishing/overfished. Sensitivity analysis indicated that biases on the source of initial life-history parameters have a stronger influence on the reference points of conservation and management recommendations were provided based on the results.
