Patients with chronic Chagas disease have a higher prevalence of premature ventricular contraction (PVC) because of immunoinflammatory response magnified by the increased oxidative stress. Thus, the sequential treatment with benznidazole (BZN) and antioxidants can reduce the prevalence of PVC. We wish to establish whether the etiological treatment of Chagas disease followed by supplementation with the antioxidant vitamins E and C decreases the prevalence of PVC in these patients. A sample of 41 patients with chronic Chagas disease at different stages of the heart disease was selected for the treatment against the causative agent using BZN (5 mgkg(-1)d(-1), minimum dose 300 mg daily) for 2 months followed by supplementation with antioxidants such as vitamins E (800 UI/d) and C (500 mg/d) for 6 months. The prevalence of PVC was observed by conducting 24-hour Holter. To evaluate the oxidative status of the patients, serum markers of oxidative stress like glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione S-transferase were measured, and also reduced glutathione, vitamin E, and markers of tissue damage like thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and protein carbonyl. A decrease in the prevalence of PVC in patients with advanced Chagas heart disease was observed (5391 vs. 1185, P = 0.0068). This reduction was followed by decrease of serum markers of oxidative stress. In patients with a lower degree of cardiac damage, the reduction on prevalence of PVC was not significant. The etiological treatment with BZN followed by supplementation with antioxidant vitamins E and C reduces episodes of PVC in patients with severe Chagas heart disease.

Arsenic exposure from groundwater: environmental contamination, human health effects, and sustainable solutions

Elida Cristina Monteiro De Oliveira, Evelyn Siqueira Caixeta, Vanessa Santana Vieira Santos, Boscolli Barbosa Pereira

Summary: Arsenic is naturally occurring but can also contaminate groundwater due to mining, agricultural, and industrial processes. Human exposure to arsenic from contaminated water can lead to acute toxicity and chronic effects, including skin lesions and cancer. Strategies to diminish arsenic in water include physicochemical treatment systems, bioremediation using cyanobacteria and algae, and nanotechnology applications.

Ecotoxicological assessment of water and sediment river samples to evaluate the environmental risks of anthropogenic contamination

Summary: Several studies have shown that effluent discharges can contaminate waterways. However, the impact of chemical pollutants on sediment, especially from an ecotoxicological perspective, is not well understood. This study compared water-sediment samples from high-anthropogenic urban areas and low-anthropogenic peri-urban areas. The results suggest chronic toxicity effects in the samples collected from the high-anthropogenic urban area, while no acute toxicity was observed in both areas.

Using native fish in eco-genotoxic assessment of heavy metal contamination pollution arising from nearby large Brazilian rivers

Summary: Worldwide water quality has worsened due to continuous pollution by agrochemicals, especially heavy metals. Fish genotoxicity biomarkers are important for evaluating the environmental risk of pollutants. In this study, Cichlasoma paranaense fish were used as a model to assess the genotoxic effects of water pollution in Brazilian rivers. Samples from different river sites showed contamination by metals, with the highest concentrations of Cu in areas with forest fragmentation caused by intensive agriculture. The fish exposed to samples from agricultural areas exhibited significantly higher genotoxic effects. The results suggest that C. paranaense fish can serve as a reliable model for detecting genotoxic effects of agrochemicals.

Summary: The direct impact of mining activities on physicochemical and biological parameters in aquatic ecosystems increases the ecotoxicological risk of exposure to contaminants and pollutants. This study used a native and adapted floating aquatic macrophyte as a model organism to assess the environmental risk and its potential application in bioremediation of heavy metals in a gold mining area. The results showed significant bioconcentration of Cr, Pb, Cu, and Zn in the roots of the macrophyte, confirming its suitability for use in rhizofiltration. H. ranunculoides also demonstrated high potential for phytoextraction of arsenic, an essential requirement for plants in bioremediation programs.
