American trypanosomiasis is caused by a parasite endemic of the Americas. Current migration has globalized Chagas disease. Acute infection usually resolves spontaneously. Nonetheless, 20% to 40% develop cardiomyopathy 20 to 30 years later. Progression to cardiomyopathy is devastatingly rapid, manifesting with heart failure and sudden death. Etiologic treatment is highly effective and recommended in those with acute infections, congenital infections, and parasite reactivation, and women of childbearing age, but in asymptomatic Trypanosoma cruzi carriers and patients with early cardiomyopathy remains controversial and under investigation. Progression of heart failure is rapid and accounts for most of the morbidity and related mortality.

Summary: Chagas disease is a tropical vector-borne infection caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, endemic in South and Central America but increasingly becoming a burden in the United States and Europe due to human migration. Most patients are asymptomatic during the acute phase, with around 30% progressing to detectable organ damage mainly affecting the cardiovascular and digestive systems in the chronic symptomatic phase, which can lead to Chagas cardiomyopathy, a leading cause of nonischemic cardiomyopathy in Latin America. Treatment during the parasitic infection is possible, but efficacy during the advanced chronic symptomatic phase remains uncertain. Further studies are needed to improve clinical outcomes and refine treatment recommendations.

Summary: Health-care workers have an 11% prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with nurses being the most affected personnel, mainly working in hospital nonemergency wards. 40% of HCWs infected with COVID-19 were asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis, while 5% developed severe complications and 0.5% died.

Andres F. Miranda-Arboleda, Ezequiel Jose Zaidel, Rachel Marcus, Maria Jesus Pinazo, Luis Eduardo Echeverria, Clara Saldarriaga, Alvaro Sosa Liprandi, Adrian Baranchuk, Neglected Tropical Dis Infect Dis affecting Heart NET-Heart project

Summary: The author highlights the global impact of Chagas disease in Latin America, emphasizing the importance of improving access to care for CD patients. They identify barriers to early diagnosis and treatment, cultural beliefs, and stigma as key challenges in addressing the disease burden worldwide. By identifying and addressing these barriers nationally and globally, appropriate policies and public health programs can be developed to reduce the impact of Chagas disease.

Summary: The global burden of Chagas disease has changed in recent decades, with a sustained decline in the number of cases. While the majority of cases remain concentrated in Latin America, the increase observed in North America and Europe highlights the importance of screening and raising awareness among at-risk populations.

Summary: This study used data from the RECOLFACA registry to describe the characteristics and healthcare resource utilization patterns of HF patients in Colombia. The results showed that multiple evidence-based treatments for HF are being widely used in Colombia, but there seems to be room for improvement regarding some interventions for the treatment of patients with HF.
