Summary: This research assesses county food retail environment and explores how income and racial/ethnic factors contribute to geographic variations in obesity rates. The study found persistent inequalities in healthfulness and accessibility between low- and high-income counties, and that income and racial/ethnic factors play essential roles in shaping the relationship between obesity and food environment. Among the indicators, healthfulness exhibits relatively consistent relationships with obesity rates regardless of income or racial/ethnic factors.

Summary: This study examines the association and temporal trends between the food environment and BMI of adults. The results show that BMI increases as accessibility to healthy outlets decreases. High access to supermarkets and unhealthy outlets are associated with lower BMI. The research highlights the importance of increasing access to diverse food outlets, particularly healthy ones, for promoting good health.

Summary: This study quantified how observable characteristics contribute to influenza vaccination disparities among White, Black, and Hispanic nursing home residents, finding that living in a predominantly White facility and proxies for nursing home quality were important contributors to these disparities. Further research is needed to explore potential unmeasured contributors, such as nursing home staff attitudes and beliefs.

Summary: Cancer inequity affects ethnic minorities and people of lower socioeconomic status, leading to poor access to care and higher prevalence of comorbid conditions like diabetes. This study found that minority cancer patients, especially non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanic/Latino individuals, were more likely to have diabetes. Older, ethnic minority, overweight/obese, and lower educated cancer patients were also at higher risk for diabetes. Clinicians and health systems should routinely assess cancer patients for diabetes and provide coordinated care.

Summary: This study found a significant gene-environment interaction for energy density, indicating that DRD4-7R carriers had more energy dense diets than non-carriers, particularly in areas with more unhealthy food retailers. However, no main or interactive effects of DRD4 VNTR and food environment were found for BMI. The results suggest that genetic markers related to dopamine pathways can identify children who may be more responsive to unhealthy local food environments.

Summary: The local retail food environment has a significant impact on dietary patterns and food choices, particularly in resource-poor communities. A systematic scoping review will be conducted to examine adult food choices in relation to the local retail food environment in these communities. The review will use observational studies from 2005 to 2021 and follow PRISMA-ScR guidelines and the framework process by Arksey and O'Malley.

Summary: This study examined the congruency between youth food and physical activity environments in the United States, revealing disparities in congruency based on region, rurality, and income levels. Nearly 25% of counties had incongruent food and PA environments, with specific patterns based on rural versus metropolitan and low-income versus high-income areas. The identification of national and regional disparities in environmental obesity determinants can inform targeted public health interventions.

Summary: This study examines the changes in price promotions after the implementation of the 2017 Oakland SSB tax. The findings suggest that while the prevalence of price promotions for SSBs did not significantly change in Oakland, the depth of price promotions increased. This increase in the amount of price promotions may reflect a strategy by manufacturers to weaken the tax and/or retailers to bolster demand.

Summary: This study assessed trends in food environment and market concentration and racial and ethnic inequities in food environment exposure and food retail market concentration at the US census tract level from 2000 to 2019. The results showed clear patterns of high and low healthy food access clusters, and disparities in food environment exposure and market concentration by race. Asian Americans were found to be more likely to live in neighborhoods with low food environment exposure and low retail market concentration.

Summary: This study reveals disparities in food insecurity, food pantry use, and barriers experienced by different racial groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. Black and Latino adults had the highest prevalence of food insecurity and pantry use. Moreover, they reported more barriers but less stigma around pantry use compared to White adults. Addressing these disparities could involve increasing pantry hours, providing bilingual staff, transportation or delivery options, and creating multilingual public awareness campaigns.

Summary: Recent studies show that racial/ethnic health disparities disappear in racially integrated communities, indicating that place, not race, plays a significant role in shaping these disparities. This study examines this theory among children and finds that school segregation is a major contributor to childhood obesity disparities.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the retail food environment and household food waste. The findings show that an increase in distance to the nearest small food store is associated with a slight increase in food waste for all households. Furthermore, an increase in distance to the nearest large food store is associated with more food waste specifically among households in poverty, especially those without cars.

Summary: The study evaluated the availability and quality of food labelling components in the Canadian e-grocery retail environment. The results showed that while all products had product images, essential nutrition information such as nutrition facts and allergen details were lacking. The study also found wide variability and inconsistencies in the presentation of product labelling components.

Summary: This study evaluated racial disparities in characteristics and comorbidities of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Michigan, United States. The results showed that Black patients were younger, had higher body mass index and diabetes prevalence, and presented later compared to White patients. However, despite higher obesity rates in young Black patients, hospitalized Black patients did not have worse outcomes compared to White patients.
