Summary: This study aims to evaluate the mediating roles of social support and self-efficacy in the association between work stress and mental health among primary public health workers (PHWs). A large-scale cross-sectional survey was conducted among 3,809 PHWs from all 249 community health centers in Shanghai, China. The results showed that work stress had significant direct and indirect effects on mental health, and enhancing social support and self-efficacy may be effective interventions to mitigate the effects of work-related stress on mental health.

Summary: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a life-threatening event, and the emotional experience of patients is often overlooked. A study on PE patients revealed that about one-in-five patients experienced depressive or anxiety symptoms after PE. Factors such as age, history of depression, and pulmonary embolism severity index were associated with depression and anxiety symptoms. Monitoring the mental health of PE patients is important for early detection and intervention.

Summary: The study examined the factor structure and correlates of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) in multiple sclerosis patients, finding it to be a reliable and valid self-assessment scale for monitoring the psychiatric and psychological status of patients with MS. The HADS subscales showed good internal consistencies and convergent validity, suggesting its use in clinical monitoring.

Summary: Depression and anxiety are common among inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, affecting their quality of life and disease prognosis. This study demonstrates the utility of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) as a valid screening tool for depression and anxiety in IBD patients. Administering the HADS in gastrointestinal follow-ups with lower cut-off scores for depression can help identify patients at risk.

Summary: In a study of Philadelphia residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, anxiety and depression rates were estimated, with specific worries related to mood disorders identified. As the pandemic progressed, anxiety, depression, and fear of infection worsened, while difficult experiences such as loss of income and health issues were associated with worries and mood disorders. Participants who relied on close personal networks for support fared better psychologically than those who primarily relied on government and social services organizations. Thematic analysis revealed complex perceptions of the pandemic and coping strategies among participants.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, high rates of emotional distress were detected among cancer patients in active treatment, with fear of cancer being greater than fear of COVID-19. Factors associated with higher psychological symptomatology included a history of psychotropic drug use and the adoption of extra infection prevention measures.

Summary: Caregivers play a crucial role in supporting patients with chronic diseases, such as heart disease, but often experience caregiver stress. Interventions for caregivers of heart disease patients mainly focus on improving quality of life and reducing burden, depression, and anxiety, with more research needed to develop consistent clinical interventions that improve caregiver outcomes.

Summary: Living situation and social support play a moderating role in the association between detachment and affective disorder symptoms during the COVID-19 lockdown. People living alone displayed lower levels of anxiety, while those living with others (but not as a couple) showed higher levels of depression. Social support can alleviate feelings of detachment and prevent affective disorders during lockdowns.

Summary: A survey-based study investigated the effects of male anxiety and depression on in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes, finding that men with anxiety had lower total motile sperm counts during IVF, but there were no differences in live birth rates. The study showed that male anxiety causes low sperm motility, worse sperm morphology, and increased DNA fragmentation, which are known to be influential factors on fertilization rates and embryo quality during IVF.

Summary: Advances in medical care have allowed more young people with LLNDDs to survive into adulthood. However, the traditional model of care between pediatrics and adult medicine is not suitable for their needs. A joint transitional care model between pediatrics and adult PC team is recommended to address the palliative care needs of young adults with LLNDDs.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to explore the outcomes of patients receiving high-dose opioids for pain management. The results showed that high-dose opioid treatment significantly relieved pain and improved the quality of life of patients to some extent. In addition, the study also found that multimodal high-dose opioid pain treatment plays a crucial role in relieving moderate to severe pain.

Summary: Rituximab is an established therapy for children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome, providing short- to medium-term disease remission and avoiding steroid toxicities. Recent trials focus on using rituximab as a first-line agent for milder disease severity. The treatment response to rituximab depends on various factors, including patient characteristics, dosing regimen, and the use of immunosuppression. Repeated treatments lead to an improving response overall, but relapse eventually occurs in 80% of patients, necessitating additional courses of rituximab. The long-term safety profile and the development of reliable predictors for treatment success and side effects are areas of concern.

Summary: Chromatin regulators play important roles in the pathogenesis of renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). In this study, a risk prediction model for renal IRI was developed based on the upregulated expression of five chromatin regulator genes (DUSP1, GADD45A, GADD45B, GADD45G, HSPA1A), which are associated with key signaling pathways. GADD45A and GADD45B were found to be correlated with pDCs and enriched in the MAPK pathway. Candidate drugs targeting GADD45A and GADD45B may have therapeutic potential for renal IRI.
