Summary: This study examined the impact of statin use on mortality and cardiovascular events in frail older adults. The results showed that statin use was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events, regardless of frailty.

Summary: Knowledge of the features and factors of patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) who are protected from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is important for clinical and prognostic care. This study found that resilient FH patients were characterized by being female, having a defective LDL-receptor mutation, higher levels of plasma HDL-C, lower levels of Lp(a), and an absence of hypertension.

Summary: The study found that in elderly Asian patients without clinically recognized atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD), statin treatment significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular mortality and was associated with a reduction in ischemic stroke in patients with diabetes.

Summary: This study aimed to develop and validate a competing risk model (CRISK) to predict incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and compare its performance with QRISK3. The study found that CRISK and CRISK-CCI performed better than QRISK3, with CRISK-CCI recommending fewer individuals for treatment and having a lower number needed to treat (NNT) to prevent a new CVD event. Therefore, it is recommended to use competing risk models for primary prevention treatment recommendations for CVD.

Summary: The study suggests that higher physical health-related quality of life is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly for heart failure and myocardial infarction. Mental health-related quality of life is not associated with cardiovascular events.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study examined statin treatment patterns and incident ASCVD among older adults aged 65-79 for primary prevention. It found that patients over 75 years old were less likely to receive moderate- or high-intensity statin prescriptions, and had a higher risk of incident ASCVD compared to younger counterparts. Further research is needed to understand the reasons for age-based differences in statin use and ASCVD risk among older adults.

Summary: The study found that postdiagnosis statin use was associated with improved survival among people with ovarian cancer, particularly in women with serous cancers. However, there was no statistically significant association between beta-blocker use and survival.

Summary: This study evaluated the cardiovascular event risk among individuals aged 65 and older with depression who were prescribed amphetamines. The results showed that the exposed cohort had improved lipid profiles and blood pressure compared to the control group, but had an increased risk of cardiovascular events.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the associations between carbohydrate quality, gut microbiota, and cardiometabolic risk factors in an elderly Mediterranean population. The results found that higher carbohydrate quality was associated with increased gut microbiota diversity, certain genera abundance, and beneficial metabolic outcomes. These findings suggest that a better quality of carbohydrate intake is linked to improved metabolic health and may be influenced by specific gut microbiota.

Summary: Statin therapy in older people for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease is associated with significantly lower risks of all-cause mortality, CVD death, and stroke, but not with myocardial infarction. The observational findings support the need for further trials to test the benefits of statins in individuals above 75 years of age.

Summary: The study aimed to define the rates of cardiovascular and noncardiovascular death in people with specified cardiovascular diseases or accruing cardiovascular multimorbidity; findings showed that as cardiovascular multimorbidity increased, there was a greater proportion of cardiovascular and infection-related deaths; compared to those without cardiovascular diseases, individuals with three or more cardiovascular diseases experienced significantly higher incidence rate ratios for cardiovascular death.
