Seismic soil liquefaction is considered as one of the most complex geotechnical earthquake engineering problems owing to the uncertainty and complexity involved in soil parameters, seismic parameters, and site condition factors. Each one of these parameters contains a variety of factors that trigger liquefaction and have varying degrees of importance. However, estimating accurate and reliable liquefaction-induced hazards requires identification and benchmarking of the most influential factors that control soil liquefaction. Seismic soil liquefaction factors were identified by Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach and analyzed through Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) and the Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification (MICMAC) methodologies. The ISM model presented the relationships between fifteen seismic soil liquefaction factors and their benchmarking position from higher to lower-level significant factors in hierarchy. MICMAC is used to examine the strength of the relationship between seismic soil liquefaction significant factors based on their driving and dependence power. This research characterizes the identification and benchmarking of the seismic soil liquefaction factors and their relationships. The results show that the factors-duration of earthquake, peak ground acceleration, drainage condition, and standard penetration test (SPT) blow counts-influence seismic soil liquefaction directly and soil type is the governing factor that forms the base of the ISM hierarchy and consequently triggers seismic soil liquefaction. The results provide a more accurate way of selecting significant factors for establishment of seismic soil liquefaction potential and liquefaction-induced hazards risk assessment models.

Novel Approach to Predicting Soil Permeability Coefficient Using Gaussian Process Regression

Mahmood Ahmad, Suraparb Keawsawasvong, Mohd Rasdan Bin Ibrahim, Muhammad Waseem, Kazem Reza Kashyzadeh, Mohanad Muayad Sabri Sabri

Summary: Determining the soil permeability coefficient is crucial for assessing groundwater, infiltration, runoff, and drainage in the design stage of construction projects. This study developed Gaussian process regression models based on kernel functions to estimate the soil permeability coefficient using six input parameters. The models were evaluated and compared, with the Gaussian process regression model based on Pearson universal kernel achieving better and more reliable results, indicating its potential for further research.

Metallic-Mineral Prospecting Using Integrated Geophysical and Geochemical Techniques: A Case Study from the Bela Ophiolitic Complex, Baluchistan, Pakistan

Mehboob Ur Rashid, Waqas Ahmed, Muhammad Waseem, Bakht Zamin, Mahmood Ahmad, Mohanad Muayad Sabri Sabri

Summary: An integrated geophysical and geochemical investigation was conducted to identify metallic minerals in the mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Bela Ophiolitic Complex. The study identified two anomalous zones based on magnetic observations and Induced Polarization (IP) targeting. The high-anomalous zone was characterized by high IP values and low resistivity, while the low-anomalous zone had very low IP values and high resistivity.

Alkali activation of waste concrete powder: Effects of alkali type and concentration

Sasui Sasui, Gyuyong Kim, Jeongsoo Nam, Syed Fakhar Alam, Hamin Eu, Yaechan Lee, Mahmood Ahmad

Summary: This study recycled waste concrete by alkali activation of waste concrete powder (WCP), which can efficiently produce alkali-activated cement. The effects of two alkali activators (NaOH and KOH) on the performance of alkali activated WCP cement were discussed. The results showed that NaOH-activated WCP outperformed KOH-activated WCP, and the use of 8 M alkali solutions improved the compressive strength, microstructure, and reactivity of WCP.

Effect of hybrid-fiber- reinforcement on the shear behavior of high-strength-concrete beams

Ahmed Awad, Maged Tawfik, A. Deifalla, Mahmood Ahmad, Mohanad Muayad Sabri Sabri, Amr El-said

Summary: The shear behavior of concrete beams was studied experimentally using hybrid-fiber-reinforced-high-strength-concrete. Results showed that the addition of both polypropylene and steel fibers improved the shear strength of the beams by 18% compared to the control beam. The behavior of the hybrid-fiber-reinforced beams was comparable to that of conventional concrete as the shear strength increased with a decrease in span to depth ratio or an increase in transverse reinforcing ratio. A non-linear numerical model was developed and validated, showing that the ACI calculations were conservative.

Summary: This study evaluates flood risks and effects in the Huaihe River basin and specifically focuses on the Cinan Feizuo flood protection area. The study uses MIKE (ID-2D), Saint-Venant equation, and MIKE 11 and MIKE 21 models to analyze and quantify flood dynamics and risk. Flood inundation maps and risk assessments were conducted for different flood events, revealing high flood risk levels and significant damage in the target regions. The findings of this study provide important technical support for flood risk analysis and decision making in flood control and disaster reduction.

Summary: The addition of polymeric materials greatly affects the thermal and mechanical properties of cement mortar. In this study, the use of natural rubber latex (NRL) to enhance the insulation properties of mortar was investigated. Experimental findings showed that adding NRL significantly increased the thermal conductivity of mortar, improving its insulation capabilities.

Hamza Amin, Beenish Jehan Khan, Mahmood Ahmad, Ahmad Hakamy, Muhammad Ali Sikandar, Mohanad Muayad Sabri Sabri

Summary: The devastation caused by the illegal dumping and burning of tires is staggering. Using tires as engineering materials in civil engineering has become a major concern. This research investigates the use of locally sourced tire chips mixed with sand as an alternative backfill material. The results show that the addition of 30% tire chips improves the shear properties and toughness of the soil.

Effect of calcined clay and marble dust powder as cementitious material on the mechanical properties and embodied carbon of high strength concrete by using RSM-based modelling

Naraindas Bheel, Omrane Benjeddou, Hamad R. Almujibah, Suhail Ahmed Abbasi, Samiullah Sohu, Mahmood Ahmad, Mohanad Muayad Sabri Sabri

Summary: Using marble dust powder (MDP) and calcined clay (CC) as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in high strength concrete can reduce the environmental impact and decrease the amount of Portland cement (PC). A combination of 5% MDP and 5% CC as SCM can improve the compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength of concrete by 6.38 MPa, 67.66 MPa, and 4.88 MPa respectively after 28 days.

Effect of Coir Fibre Ash (CFA) on the strengths, modulus of elasticity and embodied carbon of concrete using response surface methodology (RSM) and optimization

Ahsan Waqar, Naraindas Bheel, Hamad R. Almujibah, Omrane Benjeddou, Mamdooh Alwetaishi, Mahmood Ahmad, Mohanad Muayad Sabri Sabri

Summary: Research has shown that adding Coir Fibre Ash (CFA) as supplementary cementitious material can improve the compressive strength and reduce the embodied carbon of concrete. The optimal impact on concrete performance is achieved with a 9% addition of CFA, while excessive addition results in performance decline. A method to predict the performance of concrete, such as compressive strength, using CFA as a supplementary cementitious material has been proposed.
