Accumulation of energy by reactive elements is limited by the amplitude of time-harmonic external sources. In the steady-state regime, all incident power is fully reflected back to the external source, and the stored energy does not increase in time, although the external source continuously supplies energy. Here we show that this limitation can be removed if the reactive element is varying in time, properly modulated by an additional active but lossless device. We show that such time-varying lossless loads of a transmission line or lossless metasurfaces can accumulate electromagnetic energy supplied by a time-harmonic source continuously in time without any theoretical limit. We analytically derive the required time dependence of the load reactance and show that it can, in principle, be realized as a series connection of mixers and filters. Furthermore, we prove that by properly designing time-varying LC circuits, one can arbitrarily engineer the time dependence of the electric current in the circuit fed by a given time-harmonic external source. As an example, we theoretically demonstrate a circuit with a linearly increasing electric current through the inductor. Calculating the energy delivered to the LC circuit and the energy released from it, we show that a modulated LC circuit can accumulate huge energy from both the time-harmonic external source and the modulating device. Finally, we discuss how this stored energy can be released in the form of a time-compressed pulse.

Grigorii Ptitcyn, Aristeidis Lamprianidis, Theodosios Karamanos, Viktar Asadchy, Rasoul Alaee, Marvin Mueller, Mohammad Albooyeh, Mohammad Sajjad Mirmoosa, Shanhui Fan, Sergei Tretyakov, Carsten Rockstuhl

Summary: This article explores the interaction between light and time-varying media, which not only provides fundamental insights but also opens up possibilities for various practical applications. Time modulation is a fundamental tool for controlling light in different ways, especially for complex systems with both spatial and temporal structures. The article develops and applies a self-consistent analytical theory of light scattering, focusing on a sphere made from a time-varying material with Lorentzian dispersion. The proposed theory is verified through full-wave simulations and reveals interesting effects such as energy transfer from the time-modulation subsystem to the electromagnetic field.

Loss-gain compensated anti-Hermitian magnetodielectric medium to realize Tellegen nihility effects

Mohammad Sajjad Mirmoosa, Xuchen Wang, Lukas Freter, Ari Sihvola, Sergei Tretyakov

Summary: Generalized duality transformations modify constitutive relations of electromagnetic media while preserving principal electromagnetic properties. In this work, we consider the transformation of Tellegen nihility as a specific type of extreme-property nonreciprocal bi-isotropic media and demonstrate that intriguing electromagnetic properties of that medium can be realized in a certain class of isotropic magnetodielectric media without magnetoelectric coupling. We show that the transformed medium exhibits permittivity and permeability values with equal absolute values and opposite signs.

Summary: By utilizing the fundamental electromagnetic properties of metasurfaces, we have developed a platform for classifying reciprocal bianisotropic metasurfaces and determining their isotropic, anisotropic, bi-isotropic, and bianisotropic properties. We have provided experimental guidelines for identifying each class using macroscopic scattering parameters, such as reflection and transmission coefficients, under plane wave illumination with linear and/or circular polarization. We have also clarified common confusions in the classification of anisotropic and chiral metasurfaces based on circular dichroism measurements.

Antenna bandwidth engineering through time-varying resistance

M. H. Mostafa, N. Ha-Van, P. Jayathurathnage, X. Wang, G. Ptitcyn, S. A. Tretyakov

Summary: The Chu limit restricts the operational bandwidth of resonant circuits due to the size limitation of the resonator. This limitation hinders the miniaturization of antennas, as their bandwidth is inversely proportional to their size. To overcome this, we propose the use of slow time modulation of resistive elements to engineer the bandwidth of small antennas. The modulation of resistance induces a virtual impedance that can be fully controlled by modulation parameters and optimize the frequency response of a resonant circuit.

Reflectarrays and Metasurface Reflectors as Diffraction Gratings

Fu Liu, Do-Hoon Kwon, Sergei Tretyakov

Summary: Reconfigurable reflectors have great potential in future telecommunication systems, and there is active research on designing and realizing full and tunable reflection control. Reflectarrays, the classical approach to scanning reflectors, are based on phased-array theory and physical optics approximation. To overcome the limitations, researchers are actively studying inhomogeneous metasurfaces using diffraction grating theory. Unifying these two approaches and studying reconfigurable reflectors from a unified point of view is necessary for achieving tunability and realizing their full potential.

Simple Link-Budget Estimation Formulas for Channels Including Anomalous Reflectors

Sergei Kosulnikov, Francisco S. Cuesta, Xuchen Wang, Sergei A. Tretyakov

Summary: Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are promising tools for optimizing propagation channels in advanced wireless communication systems, particularly in high-frequency (millimeter-band) links with directive antennas. RIS panels act as high-gain passive repeaters, creating complex field patterns in the far zone through interference with reflected waves from illuminated spots on supporting walls. In this study, we develop a simple link-budget model for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) channels using reflections from finite-size metasurfaces (MSs) designed as anomalous reflectors or splitters. The model considers diffraction at RIS panel edges and interference with reflections from supporting structures, taking into account realistic losses and validating results through numerical simulations.

Spin-dependent phenomena at chiral temporal interfaces

Mohamed Hesham Mohamed Mostafa, Mohammad S. Mirmoosa, Sergei A. Tretyakov

Summary: Recently, there has been extensive research on temporally varying electromagnetic media to explore new ways of controlling light. However, spin-dependent phenomena in these media have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we demonstrate the existence of spin-dependent phenomena at a temporal interface between chiral and dielectric media. We show that linearly polarized light is split into right-handed and left-handed circularly polarized waves with different angular frequencies and the same phase velocities due to the material discontinuity in time. This effect allows for high-efficiency temporal separation of the two spin states of light.

Metasurface-based realization of photonic time crystals

Xuchen Wang, Mohammad Sajjad Mirmoosa, Viktar S. Asadchy, Carsten Rockstuhl, Shanhui Fan, Sergei A. Tretyakov

Summary: Photonic time crystals are artificial materials with spatially uniform but temporally varying electromagnetic properties. This study extends the concept of photonic time crystals to two-dimensional artificial structures called metasurfaces. By designing a microwave metasurface, the researchers confirmed the existence of momentum bandgaps and exponential wave amplification, demonstrating the potential of metasurfaces as a material platform for emerging photonic space-time crystals and for amplifying surface-wave signals in wireless communications.

Summary: A perfect anomalous reflector is designed based on the receiving and scattering array antenna theory to optimize the scattering characteristics of a planar reflecting surface. By algebraic optimization of the load reactances, the reflection amplitudes into propagating Floquet modes can be controlled, avoiding the need for brute-force optimization via electromagnetic simulations. Numerical designs of wide-angle reflectors show that the proposed approach achieves higher reflection efficiencies compared to conventional reflectarray designs in a computationally efficient manner.

Emulating bianisotropic coupling through coherent illumination

F. S. Cuesta, M. S. Mirmoosa, S. A. Tretyakov

Summary: One advantage of reciprocal bianisotropic metasurfaces is their ability to produce asymmetric scattering depending on the illumination side and circular polarization. However, we demonstrate that geometrical asymmetry can be emulated using nonbianisotropic layers in coherent illumination, enabling optical control of desired asymmetric scattering and chirality effects. We illustrate this concept by emulating asymmetric scattering required for creating a 180 degrees hybrid junction for plane waves using either a bianisotropic metasurface or simple sheets with electric response under simultaneous illumination by two coherent waves.
