Tumor Microenvironment Autophagic Processes and Cachexia: The Missing Link?

Renata de Castro Goncalves, Paula Paccielli Freire, Dario Coletti, Marilia Seelaender

Summary: Cachexia is a syndrome affecting the entire organism, especially prevalent in cancer patients, involving systemic inflammation and immunosuppression. The imbalance of autophagy within the tumor microenvironment can lead to chronic inflammation and immune dysfunction, impacting both tumor progression and cachexia development. Understanding this complex relationship may improve cancer treatment outcomes and prevent/mitigate cancer cachexia.

Metabolic Remodeling in Skeletal Muscle Atrophy as a Therapeutic Target

Alessandra Renzini, Carles Sanchez Riera, Isidora Minic, Chiara D'Ercole, Biliana Lozanoska-Ochser, Alessia Cedola, Giuseppe Gigli, Viviana Moresi, Luca Madaro

Summary: The skeletal muscle, as a highly responsive tissue, undergoes metabolic changes in response to external demand. Various atrophic conditions, such as aging, ALS, and cancer-induced cachexia, lead to muscle wasting through different molecular signaling pathways. Nutritional interventions and physical exercise have been shown to be effective tools for counteracting muscle wasting in atrophic conditions.

Determinants of epigenetic resistance to HDAC inhibitors in dystrophic fibro-adipogenic progenitors

Silvia Consalvi, Luca Tucciarone, Elisa Macri, Marco De Bardi, Mario Picozza, Illari Salvatori, Alessandra Renzini, Sergio Valente, Antonello Mai, Viviana Moresi, Pier Lorenzo Puri

Summary: Late-stage mdx FAPs exhibit abnormal HDAC activity and genome-wide alterations of histone acetylation that cannot be fully reversed by HDACi. HDACi show general resistance in inducing H3K9/14 hyperacetylation in late-stage mdx FAPs, but is effective in reducing promoter acetylation and blunting SASP gene activation.

Effects of maternal high-energy diet and spirulina supplementation in pregnant and lactating sows on performance, quality of carcass and meat, and its fatty acid profile in male and female offspring

R. Lugara, L. Realini, M. Kreuzer, K. Giller

Summary: This study found a sex-specific programming effect on offspring growth in response to maternal spirulina intake, but high energy intake had no effect. Spirulina intake did not affect meat quality, but it may improve the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids in offspring meat.

A High-Energy Diet and Spirulina Supplementation during Pre-Gestation, Gestation, and Lactation do Not Affect the Reproductive and Lactational Performance of Primiparous Sows

Rosamaria Lugara, Lukasz Grzeskowiak, Juergen Zentek, Susanne Meese, Michael Kreuzer, Katrin Giller

Summary: High-energy or high-fat diets do not directly affect the reproductive and lactational traits in sows, but may potentially impact offspring growth and health through modifying the colostrum fatty acid profile. The microalga spirulina does not directly affect the reproduction and lactation traits in sows, but may potentially influence the proportion of males and females in offspring.

Crossbred Sows Fed a Western Diet during Pre-Gestation, Gestation, Lactation, and Post-Lactation Periods Develop Signs of Lean Metabolic Syndrome That Are Partially Attenuated by Spirulina Supplementation

Rosamaria Lugara, Simone Renner, Eckhard Wolf, Annette Liesegang, Rupert Bruckmaier, Katrin Giller

Summary: Excessive intake of fats and sugars in the Western diet is a major cause of obesity. This study investigated the effects of Western diet and spirulina supplementation on gestating and lactating domestic pigs as a model for metabolic disturbances. The results suggest that domestic pigs have limited suitability as a model for Western diet-induced metabolic impairments, but low-dose spirulina supplementation can partially attenuate the negative effects.
