Summary: The study found a significantly higher prevalence of insomnia in Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic tic disorder (CTD), which is associated with familial factors, neurodevelopmental comorbidities, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)/medication. Insomnia should be routinely assessed and managed in TS/CTD patients.

Summary: In 2020, there was a significant increase in referrals for young people with rapid onset of severe tic-like behaviors. A working group was formed to develop clinical criteria for the diagnosis of functional tic-like behaviors (FTLBs) to aid in recognition and diagnosis by healthcare professionals.

Summary: This study examined the association between GAS pharyngeal exposures and tic exacerbations in children with CTD across Europe. The results did not support GAS exposures as contributing factors for tic exacerbations and suggested that specific workup or active management of GAS infections is unlikely to modify the course of tics in CTD.

Summary: On October 15, 2021, the Minnesota Department of Health initiated an investigation into a cluster of students in a school displaying tic-like behaviors believed to be linked to recent COVID-19. Through interviews and questionnaires, it was discovered that eight female students aged 15-17 had tic-like behaviors lasting more than 24 hours. These behaviors were found to be associated with underlying mental health issues rather than the immediate effects of COVID-19. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding functional tic-like behaviors and adolescent mental health.

Summary: This study investigated the oscillatory changes in the right frontal lobe during motor inhibition in individuals with chronic tic disorders. The findings suggest that individuals with chronic tic disorders show greater event-related desynchronization in the right superior, middle, and inferior frontal gyral, which is associated with lower tic severity.

Summary: Clinicians have observed an increase in functional tic-like behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in children and youth. This study describes the development of rapid-onset functional tic-like behaviors in adults between May 2020 and June 2021. These behaviors are characterized by a younger age of onset, higher severity and impairment scores, and a higher likelihood of complex motor and vocal tics, as well as coprolalia. Participants with rapid-onset tic-like behaviors also reported higher levels of mental health symptoms and were more likely to be diagnosed with depression. This subtype of functional neurological disorder appears to be strongly influenced by social factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: Genetic factors partially explain the associations between childhood psychopathology and adult outcomes. Specific adult traits are genetically associated with childhood psychopathology, such as major depression being associated with ADHD, internalizing problems, and social problems. Additionally, educational attainment, BMI, and neuroticism have genetic associations with specific childhood phenotypes, while bipolar disorder, subjective well-being, and insomnia are not associated with any childhood traits.

Summary: Understanding the relationship between chronic pain and suicidal behavior is important for suicide prevention. The study found that the association between chronic pain and suicidal behavior may be attributed to unmeasured confounding or pain comorbidity. However, the association was not statistically significant within monozygotic twin pairs, suggesting the presence of familial confounding.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study used electronic health records to investigate the association between frailty and outcomes in older COVID-19 patients. The results showed that a medical record-based electronic frailty index (eFI) was effective for risk stratification in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Frailty was significantly associated with higher mortality, readmission, and longer hospital stays, and the eFI had the best predictive accuracy among all measures.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term clinical and cost effectiveness of online therapist-supported exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy for treating tics. The results showed that online ERP therapy reduced tic severity and had long-lasting effects at 12 and 18 months after treatment initiation. The economic evaluation indicated that online ERP therapy is a cost-effective intervention.

Summary: The study investigated the familial co-aggregation of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) and cancer. The results showed no significant familial associations between IIM and cancer overall, but there was a familial association in male relatives with dermatomyositis. Additionally, familial co-aggregation of IIM and cancer diagnosed before 50 years of age was observed only in offspring. Further analysis revealed significant familial associations for myeloid malignancies and liver cancer in male relative pairs after controlling for multiple testing.

Summary: This study evaluated the implementation of therapist-guided internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in the Swedish public health system. The results showed that ICBT was efficacious in reducing symptoms and could be reproduced in a clinical setting. The implementation of OCD-NET and BDD-NET in the Swedish public health service was deemed suitable.

Summary: Synaesthesia is a sensory phenomenon where external stimuli trigger additional sensations. It aggregates in families and is associated with the autism spectrum and autistic traits. Individual differences in self-reported synaesthesia are heritable and influenced by genetic factors, while the association with autistic traits is predominantly under genetic influence and mainly driven by non-social traits.

Summary: This study is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) genetic epidemiology, aiming to update the current knowledge in the field. The findings include the high prevalence and familial nature of OCD, especially among the relatives of children and adolescent probands, with a phenotypic heritability of around 50%, and the higher correlations of OCD symptoms between monozygotic twins are mainly attributed to genetic and non-shared environmental factors.
