Summary: This study found that oral health status is associated with the incidence of geriatric syndromes, mortality, and institutionalization among community-dwelling older adults. The findings suggest that oral health may play a role in overall geriatric health conditions and should be considered as a geriatric domain.

Summary: This study aims to determine the association between lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol use, nutrition, physical activity) and multidimensional frailty. The results showed that higher alcohol consumption, physical activity, healthy nutrition, and less smoking were associated with lower levels of frailty. Physical activity had the greatest impact on frailty.

Summary: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) aims to determine the medical, psychological, and functional capabilities of older adults in order to develop a coordinated care plan. Studies suggest that CGA may reduce the risk of unplanned hospital admissions in community-dwelling, frail, older adults.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and predictors of geriatric giants in Southern Iran. The prevalence of frailty, incontinence, immobility, depression, cognitive impairment, and malnutrition was measured among participants. The study found that geriatric giants were more common among women and older individuals.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate whether the addition of other biological and social variables to the frailty phenotype (FP) could improve the prediction of declining functional ability in community-dwelling older people. A scoring system was derived and validated using data from two studies, including FP components, age, perceived health status, and socio-economic disadvantage markers. The results showed that this scoring system was able to predict the declining functional ability in older adults.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the characteristics and validities of the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) in community-dwelling older people in Korea using the original classification tree (oCFS) and a culturally modified tree (mCFS). The results showed that the correlation coefficients with frailty index were higher in mCFS than in oCFS, and the classification coefficient of mCFS was significantly higher than that of oCFS in determining people with frailty. Therefore, the culturally modified CFS classification tree is considered valid in detecting the vulnerable population in the community-dwelling older people in Korea.

Summary: Decline in oral function in older people is related to nutritional deficiencies, increasing frailty risk and need for nursing care. This study compared the effectiveness of delivering an oral function improvement program through a tablet device versus a paper-based program. The association between improvement in tongue pressure and nutritional status at baseline was also investigated.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between FINEA/GROSSA scores and fall risk, explained falls, and unexplained falls. The results showed that FINEA scores were positively associated with accidental falls, while GROSSA scores were positively associated with unexplained falls. The group with impairments in both measures had a higher risk of both explained and unexplained falls.

Summary: This population-based retrospective cohort study aimed to determine the incidence rates of frailty among community-dwelling older veterans. Results showed a high incidence of frailty in this population, with frailty being associated with higher all-cause mortality. Future studies should focus on identifying and implementing interventions to prevent or reduce frailty-related complications in this population.

Summary: Machine learning models can be used to predict future frailty in the community setting. However, outcome variables for epidemiologic data sets such as frailty usually have an imbalance between categories, adversely affecting the performance of ML models. The study found that balancing the data set and using random forest (RF) improved the performance of predicting frailty.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the screening accuracy of an optimal GS% predicted threshold for prefrailty/frailty. The study found that a GS% predicted threshold of 0.93 provided higher screening accuracy than the traditional 1.0 m/s threshold for gait speed. Additionally, replacing gait speed with GS% predicted improved the overall discrimination of the Physical Frailty Phenotype.

Summary: This study summarises frailty measures and outcomes in trials involving frail older inpatients. The results showed a high heterogeneity of interventions and outcomes reported, posing limitations to the generalisability of findings. Utilising validated tools to measure frailty and establishing a standard set of health outcomes relevant to older people would enhance consistent reporting and evaluation in future studies.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between social cognitive difficulties and social frailty, as well as the correlation between social frailty and psychological well-being. The findings show that social cognitive difficulties and social behavior can predict increased social frailty, with social behavior being the only significant predictor. Furthermore, social frailty is also associated with various aspects of psychological well-being, with significant effects on demoralization, resilience, and life satisfaction even after adjusting for covariates.

Summary: Social frailty, defined as an inability to meet basic social needs, is considered a threat to both physical and mental health. This study examined whether emotion regulation mediates the relationship between social frailty and important well-being outcomes (stress, anxiety, and depression). The results showed that higher social frailty predicted increased stress, anxiety, and depression, and these relationships were partially mediated by emotion regulation capacity. These findings suggest that emotion regulation abilities may serve as a protective factor against the negative consequences of social frailty.
