Summary: In terms of anatomical liver sectionectomy approaches, central hepatectomy (CH) and major hepatectomy (MH) are feasible options for a centrally located hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). After propensity score matching, the short- and long-term surgical outcomes of CH and MH for centrally located HCC are similar, with CH having the advantage of not requiring preoperative portal vein embolization and increased chances of repeat hepatectomy for recurrence.

Summary: This study found through a meta-analysis that patients with spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma have significantly shorter disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) compared to patients with non-rupture hepatocellular carcinoma, indicating that spontaneous rupture is a predictor of poor survival.

Summary: This study compared the prognosis of spontaneously ruptured HCC (srHCC) with that of non-ruptured HCC (nrHCC). The results showed that patients with srHCC had a higher 5-year TTR but comparable 5-year OS to those with nrHCC after propensity score matching. Further analysis suggested that srHCC is not appropriate to be assigned as T4 stage in American Joint Committee on Cancer classification.

Summary: This study compared the perioperative and oncologic outcomes between robotic hepatectomy (RH) and laparoscopic hepatectomy (LH). The study found that RH had a lower conversion rate to open surgery and longer operative time compared to LH, but there were no significant differences in other perioperative outcomes or oncologic results.

Summary: This study aimed to explore treatment choices for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients, especially elderly patients aged 65 and above. The results showed that surgical resection can provide survival benefits for elderly patients with single lesions less than 5 cm in size.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of laparoscopic repeat hepatectomy (LRH) and open repeat hepatectomy (ORH) on recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (RHCC). A meta-analysis of studies based on propensity score-matched cohorts was conducted. The results showed that LRH had better surgical outcomes than ORH, but there were no significant differences in oncological outcomes. Therefore, LRH may be a preferable option for the treatment of RHCC.

Summary: This study suggests that TAE plus two-stage hepatectomy may be the optimal treatment for patients with spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma (RHCC). It also indicates that there is no difference in prognosis between ruptured and non-RHCC patients if the therapy is appropriate.

Summary: Age itself had no significant effect on the prognosis of elderly patients with HCC after hepatectomy. Hepatectomy can be safely performed in elderly patients after cautious perioperative management.

Summary: In clinical practice, lenvatinib showed superior progression-free survival, disease control rates, and equivalent treatment-related adverse events compared to sorafenib for patients with unresectable HCC, while also reducing the risk of disease progression. However, lack of approved post-lenvatinib systemic therapies remains a significant issue in the real world.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of perioperative blood transfusion on the prognosis of patients with ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (rHCC) at different Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stages. The results showed that perioperative blood transfusion was associated with poorer prognosis in patients with early tumor stage, but had no significant impact on the prognosis of patients with advanced tumor stage.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of liver cirrhosis on the prognosis of HCC patients after hepatectomy. The results showed that liver cirrhosis is associated with worse long-term survival and the independent risk factors for patients with cirrhosis differ from those without cirrhosis.

Summary: This meta-analysis compared the effects of laparoscopic hepatectomy (LH) versus open hepatectomy (OH) on the outcomes of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). It found that LH has better surgical outcomes and comparable oncological and survival outcomes to OH, indicating that laparoscopy is at least not inferior to open surgery for ICC.

Summary: This systematic review explored the current studies on spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma with hemorrhage and determined the optimum treatment strategy. The results showed no significant difference in the short-term efficacy between emergency resection and transarterial embolization following staged hepatectomy, but transarterial embolization following staged hepatectomy was superior to emergency resection in long-term survival.

Summary: The impact of anatomic resection (AR) and non-anatomic resection (NAR) on the oncological outcomes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with tumor diameters <= 5 cm was compared. The study found that AR significantly improved disease-free survival (DFS) at 1, 3, and 5 years after surgery. However, the difference in DFS at 7 years and overall survival (OS) at 1 and 3 years between AR and NAR were not statistically significant. Long-term OS (5, 7, and 10 years) associated with AR was superior to that associated with NAR. The intrahepatic recurrence rate did not differ significantly between AR and NAR, but the extrahepatic metastasis rate was significantly lower after AR.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical and survival features of esophageal adenosquamous carcinoma (ADSC). The proportion of ADSC within the esophageal cancer cohort declined from 2004 to 2018. The survival rate of ADSC was not significantly different from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), but worse than adenocarcinoma (ADC). Surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy were found to improve the prognosis of ADSC patients.
