Summary: This study examined the effects of a synbiotic combination on DSS-induced colitis. The findings showed that the synbiotic did not ameliorate the colitis, but instead aggravated the disease. Further experimental and clinical testing is needed before using it in animals and humans.

Summary: The prophylactic efficacy of gut microbiota-based treatments on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) management was investigated through modulation of Hippo signaling pathway-related genes and their epigenetic regulators. Both probiotic mixture and prebiotic inulin fiber attenuated steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis in NASH rats induced by a high sucrose high fat diet. The treatments also led to improvements in liver function and modulation of RNA panel related to NASH progression.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of prebiotic, probiotic, and synbiotic supplemented diets on Oreochromis niloticus. The results showed that all treatments with synbiotics significantly increased growth performance, immune parameters, and antioxidant enzyme activities, while reducing liver damage and feed conversion ratio. Furthermore, fish fed with prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics exhibited higher red blood cells, white blood cells, and hemoglobin levels, while having lower liver enzymes, albumin, total protein, globulin, creatinine, and urea levels compared to the control. Moreover, diets supplemented with probiotics showed the highest survival rates.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the impact of prebiotic and probiotic supplementation and yogurt consumption on colorectal neoplasia incidence. The findings suggest that high levels of yogurt consumption may lead to a moderate decrease in the risk of adenoma and colorectal cancer. Prebiotic supplementation did not show an association with colorectal neoplasia risk, while there was some evidence for a lower risk of adenomas with probiotic supplementation.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract with periods of remission and relapses. The etiopathogenesis is not fully understood, leading to only symptomatic treatment. There is a constant need to search for new high safety profile therapies for IBD.

Summary: The study showed that prebiotics and synbiotics can improve sociability, repetitive behavior, and gut health in a mouse model, while prebiotics may worsen sociability. Probiotic and symbiotic treatments also reduced intestinal permeability.

Summary: This study found that nonfood pro-, pre-, and synbiotics have a protective effect against all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in Americans aged 65 years or older. Nonfood pro-, pre-, and synbiotics can be a novel, inexpensive, low-risk treatment addition for older individuals to prevent all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

Summary: This research evaluated the synbiotic effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum YW11 and lactulose on intestinal morphology, colon function, and immune activity in a mouse model of UC induced by DSS. The combination of L. plantarum YW11 and lactulose significantly improved the structure of the damaged colon, reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines levels, increased anti-inflammatory factors levels, and exerted antioxidant effects. This synbiotic approach mainly worked through the NF-kappa B anti-inflammatory pathway.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the effects of synbiotic treatment on the quality of life in patients with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis. The results showed that synbiotic use can increase the SF-36 score and improve social functioning, mental health, and general health status in these patients.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic literature search and meta-analysis to determine the effect sizes of probiotics on blood lipid parameters. The results showed that probiotic/synbiotic supplements can significantly decrease triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL-C levels, and increase HDL-C levels. These effects are more pronounced in individuals with hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. However, further large and well-conducted randomized controlled trials are needed to provide more convincing evidence.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics can affect the levels of adiponectin and leptin, although these findings are still being debated. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to explore the impact of probiotic/synbiotic supplementation on appetite-regulating hormones and the desire to eat. The results showed that probiotic/synbiotic supplementation led to a significant decrease in leptin concentration and a slight increase in adiponectin levels, while also slightly increasing the desire to eat.

Summary: This study aimed to produce a synbiotic composed of prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii using cheese whey permeate as substrate. The best condition for prebiotic production was found at 32 degrees C and 0.175% enzyme concentration, while the simultaneous production of GOS and S. boulardii was most favorable at 29.5 degrees C and 0.14% enzyme concentration, showing promising results for industrial application.

Summary: There is a need for new therapies for ulcerative colitis, as many patients are unresponsive to available treatments. Strategies targeting dysbiosis of gut microbiota have been tested, but the effectiveness of conventional probiotics varies. New candidates for next-generation probiotics could provide more targeted treatment options.
