In the western State of Mexico, half of the hospital admissions for chronic kidney diseases (CKD) not associated with diabetes mellitus or hypertension correspond to subjects less than 40 years of age. Therefore, this CKD is considered of unknown causes (CKDu). In this paper we studied whether there was an association between the presence of metals and risk factors with this CKDu. We performed a transversal analytical study of 100 cases and 100 controls. A questionnaire was applied to acknowledge exposition to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, nutrition, or occupational risks. Additionally, we determined in 50 samples and 50 controls the concentration of the metals arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead. Finally, a map was constructed with the geographic references of housing from 100 patients. After performing a bivariate logistic regression, we determined that there is a statistically significant association between CKDu and smoking, occupational exposure to construction, blacksmithing, and exposure to arsenic. A larger sample is required to verify the risk of occupational exposure to the paper industry and the consumption of acetaminophen, naproxen, and cadmium. Values obtained in this work for these variables are only informative. The cases studied are in the Rio Lerma basin, one of the most contaminated in the country. The CKDu present in the State of Mexico seems to be very similar to that of Siri Lanka and of the Central American Pacific; therefore, larger scale studies are required.

Drug Delivery Systems-Based Dendrimers and Polymer Micelles for Nuclear Diagnosis and Therapy

Liliana Aranda-Lara, Blanca Eli Ocampo Garcia, Keila Isaac-Olive, Guillermina Ferro-Flores, Laura Melendez-Alafort, Enrique Morales-Avila

Summary: Polymeric nanoparticles, including micelles and dendrimers, are used to improve or control the action of therapy or imaging agents, such as radionuclides. Some radionuclides have properties suitable for simultaneous imaging and therapy, making them theranostic agents. The diversity in core materials, surface modification, and radiolabeling strategies allows for multiple possibilities in preparing polymeric nanoparticles using radionuclides in nuclear nanomedicine.

Summary: The research found that under 532nm irradiation, R6G, R123, and RB compounds underwent type-I transfer reactions with folic acid, in the order of R123 > R6G > RB. Excitation with Cerenkov radiation demonstrated a type-I reaction in R6G, and R6G was the only compound that also showed a type-I reaction with oxygen. These compounds have potential applications in PDT.

Summary: The iron reducing enrichment obtained from sulfate reducing sludge was evaluated for reducing Fe3+ coupled to acetate oxidation in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Different molar ratios of acetate/Fe3+ resulted in varying percentages of Fe3+ reduction and current densities in the MFC, showing the involvement of multiple mechanisms and bacteria in acetate utilization and Fe3+ reduction.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of gelatin, whey protein, and chitosan on the properties of composite edible films and optimize their formulation for food packaging. The results showed that the independent variables significantly affected the water vapor permeability, strength, and solubility of the edible films. The optimized formulation resulted in smooth and transparent films with lower water vapor permeability, maximum strength, and lower solubility.

Genotoxicity of Mercury and Its Derivatives Demonstrated In Vitro and In Vivo in Human Populations Studies. Systematic Review

Summary: The genotoxic potential of mercury and its derivatives remains controversial, with organic mercury compounds being more toxic than inorganic and elemental ones but all still posing a potential risk. There is not sufficient evidence for mercury to be classified as a human carcinogen. Studies have shown that inorganic mercury compounds such as mercury chloride and mercury nitrate, and organic compounds like methylmercury and thimerosal, are widely studied in populations with accidental, occupational, or iatrogenic exposure.

Summary: This study developed a targeted nanosystem for cancer treatment by encapsulating the alpha-particle-emitting radionuclide Actinium-225 into reconstituted high-density lipoproteins (rHDL). In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated successful internalization of Ac-225 into cancer cells and significant decrease in cell viability. The nanosystem showed stability and retention of radioactivity in tumor masses, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic approach for tumors overexpressing the scavenger receptor B type I (SR-BI).
