Background and objectives Recent studies have shown that hyperuricemia is commonly associated with dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Elevated serum uric acid has been demonstrated to be associated with obesity in the adult population in many countries; however, there is still a lack of evidence for the Bangladeshi population. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of hyperuricemia and determine the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and obesity among the Bangladeshi adults. Methods In this cross-sectional study, blood samples were collected from 260 adults (142 males and 118 females) and analyzed for SUA and lipid profile. All participants were categorized as underweight (n = 11), normal (n = 66), overweight (n = 120) and obese (n = 63) according to the body mass index (BMI) scale for the Asian population. Based on SUA concentration the participants were stratified into four quartiles (Q1: < 232 mu mol/L, Q2: 232-291 mu mol/L, Q3: 292-345 mu mol/L and Q4: > 345 mu mol/L). Results The mean age and BMI of the participants were 32.5 +/- 13.3 years and 24.9 +/- 3.8 kg/m(2), respectively. The average level of SUA was 294 +/- 90 mu mol/L with a significant difference between males and females (p < 0.001). Overall, the estimated prevalence of hyperuricemia was 9.3% with 8.4% in male and 10.2% in female participants. There were significant increases in the prevalence of obesity (17.4%, 22.2%, 28.6% and 31.8%, respectively, p < 0.01 for trend) across the SUA quartiles. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that SUA quartiles were independently associated with the presence of obesity (p < 0.01). Conclusion Present study indicates a significant positive relationship between SUA and obesity among the Bangladeshi adults. Therefore, routine measurement of SUA is recommended in obese individuals to prevent hyperuricemia and its related complications.

Association of serum xanthine oxidase levels with hypertension: a study on Bangladeshi adults

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between serum xanthine oxidase (XO) levels and hypertension, with XO positively correlated with systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). This suggests that XO may play a role in the pathophysiology of hypertension through the generation of reactive oxygen species.

Maternal exposure to multiple mycotoxins and adverse pregnancy outcomes: a prospective cohort study in rural Bangladesh

Summary: Limited and inconsistent evidence suggests a potential link between mycotoxins and adverse birth outcomes. This study examines the role of maternal dietary exposure to multiple mycotoxins in the development of adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. The findings indicate that exposure to OTA is associated with higher odds of low birth weight babies.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and assess its relationship with hyperuricemia in Bangladeshi adults. The results showed that the prevalence of CKD was 5.9%, with 6.1% in males and 5.2% in females. Hyperuricemia was prevalent in 18.7% of participants, with higher rates in males (23.2%) than in females (14.6%). There was a significant positive association between hyperuricemia and CKD.

The prevalence and factors associated with obesity and hypertension in university academic staff: a cross-sectional study in Bangladesh

Nurshad Ali, Shamim Ahmed, Shakil Mahmood, Aporajita Das Trisha, Firoz Mahmud

Summary: Obesity is a major risk factor for hypertension and other diseases, while hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with obesity and hypertension among university academic staff in Bangladesh. The results showed that female staff had a higher prevalence of obesity, while male staff had a higher prevalence of hypertension. Comprehensive screening programs are needed to address the high prevalence of obesity and hypertension in this group.

The impact of e-cigarette exposure on different organ systems: A review of recent evidence and future perspectives

Nurshad Ali, Joseph Xavier, Melih Engur, P. Mohanan, Jorge Bernardino de la Serna

Summary: The use of e-cigarettes is increasing worldwide, but little is known about their adverse effects on human health. This review summarizes the impact of e-cigarette exposure on different organ systems, suggesting that while they cause less harm than traditional cigarettes, long-term exposure may still lead to serious health effects. Short-term organ effects and the potential dangers of secondhand and third hand exposure have not been thoroughly investigated. More research is needed to draw a firm conclusion about the safe use of e-cigarettes.
