The bony-tongue fishes, Osteoglossomorpha, have been the focus of a great deal of morphological, systematic, and evolutionary study, due in part to their basal position among extant teleostean fishes. This group includes the mooneyes (Hiodontidae), knifefishes (Notopteridae), the abu (Gymnarchidae), elephantfishes (Mormyridae), arawanas and pirarucu (Osteoglossidae), and the African butterfly fish (Pantodontidae). This morphologically heterogeneous group also has a long and diverse fossil record, including taxa from all continents and both freshwater and marine deposits. The phylogenetic relationships among most extant osteoglossomorph families are widely agreed upon. However, there is still much to discover about the systematic biology of these fishes, particularly with regard to the phylogenetic affinities of several fossil taxa, within Mormyridae, and the position of Pantodon. In this paper we review the state of knowledge for osteoglossomorph fishes. We first provide an overview of the diversity of Osteoglossomorpha, and then discuss studies of the phylogeny of Osteoglossomorpha from both morphological and molecular perspectives, as well as biogeographic analyses of the group. Finally, we offer our perspectives on future needs for research on the systematic biology of Osteoglossomorpha.

Harutaka Hata, Sebastien Lavoue, Hiroyuki Motomura

Summary: This study redescribes Dussumieria albulina as a valid species distinct from Dussumieria acuta based on morphological and mitochondrial DNA analysis, revealing differences in body characteristics and genetic distance of 12% between the two species. Redescription of D. acuta is also provided in the study.

Taxonomic status of nominal species of the anchovy genus Stolephorus previously regarded as synonyms of Stolephorus commersonnii Lacepede 1803 and Stolephorus indicus (van Hasselt 1823), and descriptions of three new species (Clupeiformes: Engraulidae)

Harutaka Hata, Sebastien Lavoue, Hiroyuki Motomura

Summary: Examination of type specimens and non-type specimens confirmed the validity of several fish species, including three new species, with phylogenetic relationships analyzed using two mitochondrial markers. The genetic distinctiveness of each species was indicated by at least 2.4% mean p-distance divergence in the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene.

To lump, to split or to maintain? Molecular taxonomy of the spotted barb Barbodes binotatus (Cyprinidae) and closely related species in Peninsular Malaysia

Noor Zahidah Ahmad Sobri, Sebastien Lavoue, Fazimah Aziz, Siti Azizah Mohd Nor, Noor Adelyna Mohammed Akib, Md Zain Khaironizam

Summary: The study found that there are genetic differences among the Southeast Asian spotted barb, three-lined barb, and saddle barb in Peninsular Malaysia, with each species forming largely reciprocal monophyletic lineages. Further investigation revealed potential reproductive porousness between these lineages at a specific locality. Further studies are needed to determine the extent of genetic divergence among these species and their co-occurring populations.

Summary: Two cyanobacterial morphotypes isolated from Signy Island, Antarctica were characterized as belonging to the genus Wilmottia, specifically within the clade of W. murrayi. This extends the known distribution of W. murrayi in Antarctica and suggests a new combination, W. arthurensis.

Summary: We compared several populations of the glass-perchlet Parambassis siamensis and found two genetically distinct lineages, supporting the conclusion that Chanda punctulata is a junior synonym of P. siamensis.

Species diversity of anchovies (Teleostei: Engraulidae) along the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia

Summary: This study aimed to survey the diversity of anchovies along the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia and update the taxonomic list of common species. It also aimed to build a DNA database for species identification. The results showed clear genetic differences and diagnosability among the species. This study is valuable for documenting anchovy diversity and informing future fisheries management studies.

Ambassis octava, a new glass-perchlet species (Teleostei: Ovalentaria: Ambassidae) from Peninsular Malaysia

Summary: Ambassis octava sp. nov. is a new species described based on specimens collected from Peninsular Malaysia. The new species closely resembles Ambassis nalua but can be differentiated by differences in anal-fin ray length, gill raker count, predorsal scale count, and mitochondrial gene sequence. This is only the second description of a new Ambassis species in Southeast Asia in the last 100 years.

Contrasting genetic and morphological differentiation among geographical lineages of a stenotopic miniature rasborine, Boraras maculatus, in Peninsular Malaysia

Yi Qing Fam, Jamsari Amirul Firdaus Jamaluddin, Abdullah Halim Muhammad-Rasul, Mohd Lokman Ilham-Norhakim, Nik Fadzly N. Rosely, Sebastien Lavoue

Summary: This study investigated the variability of the miniature rasborine Boraras maculatus in acidic-water habitats of Peninsular Malaysia. Molecular and morphological analyses revealed four distinct lineages of B. maculatus. However, there was limited morphological differentiation among these lineages, as shown by principal component analysis and machine learning methods.

DNA-based taxonomy of a mangrove-associated community of fishes in Southeast Asia

Summary: The Merbok Estuary is one of the largest remaining mangrove forests in Peninsular Malaysia, providing important services to local and global communities. A recent study used DNA barcoding to reassess the fish diversity, revealing 139 Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units (MOTUs) and calling for further taxonomic investigations. This research highlights the benefits of combining morphological and molecular evidence to study poorly understood tropical fish communities.

Summary: The Sungai Merbok Mangrove Forest Reserve, established in 1951, is the second-largest intact mangrove forest patch in Peninsular Malaysia. A study on the fish diversity of the Merbok river estuary and its adjacent marine waters revealed 138 fish species, with the most abundant order being Perciformes.Further research is needed to complete the inventory and better understand the aquatic biodiversity in the area.
