Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of bilateral thalamic stimulation by DBS for acquired dystonia in children and young adults. The results showed that all participants tolerated the procedure well, with no safety concerns. While improvements were seen in secondary outcomes, the effects on dystonia severity were modest, indicating a need for further research in developing specific scales for acquired dystonia.

Summary: The study revealed that BPT can significantly impact the quality of life for children and families, with some children potentially developing migraines or other migraine-related syndromes. Those who exhibit migrainous features during BPT attacks are more likely to develop migraines in the future.

Monitoring stimulus-evoked hemodynamic response during deep brain stimulation with single fiber spectroscopy

Linhui Yu, M. Sohail Noor, Zelma H. T. Kiss, Kartikeya Murari

Summary: In this study, the performance of a single fiber spectroscopic system for measuring hemodynamic response in DBS animal model was evaluated. The results showed that the system is capable of accurately measuring minute relative changes in oxygen saturation and blood volume fraction in vivo, and has the potential for measuring other physiological parameters.

Limb Preference Changes after Focused-Ultrasound Thalamotomy for Tremor

Summary: Magnetic resonance-guided focused-ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy is an effective treatment for essential and other tremors. This study used the Kinarm exoskeleton robot to quantitatively measure the effects of MRgFUS on proprioception and limb use in patients with essential tremor, and found that MRgFUS did not degrade proprioception but altered limb preference.

Investigating the impact of skull vibrations on motor responses to focused ultrasound neuromodulation in small rodents and methods to mitigate them

Jake W. Hesselink, Chris Krasnichuk, Amine Benaceur, Aidan Johnson, Siyun Li, Zelma H. T. Kiss, Samuel Pichardo

Summary: This study aimed to minimize skull vibrations by adjusting and randomizing pulse repetition frequency (PRF) in focused ultrasound (FUS) neuromodulation. The study found that skull vibrations were highest at a specific PRF and random PRF reduced vibration amplitude slightly. Additionally, skull vibrations likely do not significantly impact motor responses to FUS neuromodulation.

Functional brain network features specify DBS outcome for patients with treatment resistant depression

Summary: Deep brain stimulation has shown therapeutic benefits for treatment resistant depression, but selecting appropriate patients remains challenging. This pilot project used EEG data to analyze network features as potential biomarkers for predicting treatment outcome. The results suggest that changes in brain network features, such as increased segregation and synchronization, may be associated with the ability to respond to DBS.
