A rapidly growing area of interest in biomedical science involves the reciprocal crosstalk between the sensory nervous and immune systems. Both of these systems are highly integrated, detecting potential environmental harms and restoring homeostasis. Many different cytokines, receptors, neuropeptides, and other proteins are involved in this bidirectional communication that are common to both systems. One such family of proteins includes the transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) proteins. Though much progress has been made in understanding TRPV proteins in the nervous system, their functions in the immune system are not well elucidated. Hence, further understanding their role in the peripheral immune system and as regulators of neuroimmunity is critical for evaluating their potential as therapeutic targets for numerous inflammatory disorders, cancers, and other disease states. Here, we focus on the latest advancements in understanding TRPV1 and TRPV2's roles in the immune system, TRPV1 in neuroimmunity, and TRPV1's potential involvement in anti-tumor therapy.

Exosomes Derived from Non-Classic Sources for Treatment of Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Injury of the Knee: In Vivo Review

Dan Li, Puneet Gupta, Nicholas A. Sgaglione, Daniel A. Grande

Summary: Osteoarthritis of the knee is a common chronic musculoskeletal condition, and current conservative treatments are unsatisfactory, prompting the need for alternative options such as exosomes. In vivo studies have shown the potential clinical use of exosomes derived from non-classical sources for knee osteoarthritis.

Morbidity and Mortality After Surgical Management of Tibial Plateau Fractures in Octogenarians

Tom G. Pollard, Puneet Gupta, Theodore Quan, Pradip Ramamurti, Safa C. Fassihi, Alex Gu, James DeBritz

Summary: This study compared the complications after surgical management of tibial plateau fractures between patients aged 65 to 79 years and those aged 80 to 89 years. Results showed that patients aged 80 to 89 years had increased risks of postoperative anemia requiring transfusion and extended length of hospital stay compared to patients aged 65 to 79 years.

Thirty-Day Morbidity and Mortality in Patients With COPD Following Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Rotational Ankle Fractures

Puneet Gupta, Theodore Quan, Magid G. Abdo, Joseph E. Manzi, Brock Knapp, Gene Shaffer

Summary: Patients with COPD undergoing ORIF for ankle fractures have an increased risk of postoperative morbidity, including pneumonia, unplanned intubation, and hospital readmission within 30 days. However, COPD alone should not be a barrier to surgery.

Summary: In order to reduce injury rates in American football, this study conducted a descriptive epidemiology study on high school football athletes, finding that AC sprains were the most common injury and fractures resulted in the longest time lost. Injuries were more likely to occur in older athletes, related to tackling, and in running back and linebacker positions.

Evaluating the association between race and complications following pediatric upper extremity surgery

Puneet Gupta, Andrew Palosaari, Theodore Quan, Anna M. Ifarraguerri, Sean Tabaie

Summary: This study evaluated the risk differences for complications following upper extremity surgery between African American and Caucasian pediatric patients. The results show that African American pediatric patients are not at an increased risk for postoperative complications compared to Caucasian patients, and race should not be used independently as an indicator for evaluating the risk of postoperative complications.

Summary: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are crucial in clinical research and patient-centric care. In knee arthroplasty, PROMs like OKS, KOOS, and FJS are commonly used. The NIH-developed PROMIS has gained attention recently. This study aims to provide insights on utilizing PROMIS in knee arthroplasty and compare it with legacy PROMs.
