Ekaterina A. Sidorova, Yury V. Zhernov, Marina A. Antsupova, Kamilya R. Khadzhieva, Angelina A. Izmailova, Denis A. Kraskevich, Elena V. Belova, Anton A. Simanovsky, Denis V. Shcherbakov, Nadezhda N. Zabroda, Oleg V. Mitrokhin

Summary: Micro ribonucleic acids (microRNAs or miRNAs) are a subtype of non-coding RNA that play a significant role in regulating gene expression in mammalian cells. They bind to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and silence the genes involved, making them important regulators of gene expression. Dysregulation of microRNAs is known to contribute to cancer growth, and specific microRNAs have been identified as potential biomarkers for different types of cancer. This article reviews the roles of microRNAs in breast cancer and prostate cancer progression.

Molecular Mechanisms of Scombroid Food Poisoning

Yury V. Zhernov, Mark Y. Simanduyev, Olga K. Zaostrovtseva, Ekaterina E. Semeniako, Kseniia I. Kolykhalova, Inna A. Fadeeva, Maria I. Kashutina, Sonya O. Vysochanskaya, Elena V. Belova, Denis V. Shcherbakov, Vitaly A. Sukhov, Ekaterina A. Sidorova, Oleg V. Mitrokhin

Summary: Scombroid food poisoning (SFP) is a foodborne disease caused by consumption of fresh fish and seafood with high histamine content. Differentiating SFP from true IgE-mediated allergies is challenging due to their similar clinical presentation. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of SFP and developing appropriate regulations for seafood safety are crucial for preventing adverse outcomes.

The Role of Chloroviruses as Possible Infectious Agents for Human Health: Putative Mechanisms of ATCV-1 Infection and Potential Routes of Transmission

Yury V. V. Zhernov, Sonya O. O. Vysochanskaya, Artem A. A. Basov, Vitaly A. A. Sukhov, Anton A. A. Simanovsky, Inna A. A. Fadeeva, Roman V. V. Polibin, Ekaterina A. A. Sidorova, Denis V. V. Shcherbakov, Oleg V. V. Mitrokhin

Summary: The Chlorovirus genus of the Phycodnaviridae family includes large viruses with a double-stranded DNA genome. These viruses, such as Acanthocystis turfacea chlorella virus 1 (ATCV-1), are found in freshwater sources worldwide and have sparked interest in their potential effects on the human brain. This viewpoint aims to compile existing research on ATCV-1's effects on the human body, highlight the role of chloroviruses as potential infectious agents for human health, and identify possible routes of virus transmission.

Antiviral Therapy of COVID-19

Georgii Gudima, Ilya Kofiadi, Igor Shilovskiy, Dmitry Kudlay, Musa Khaitov

Summary: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus of the scientific community has shifted from vaccine development to the development of antiviral drugs. Clinical data on the safety and efficacy of various antivirals targeting different stages of the virus life cycle has been published. This review summarizes the mechanisms and clinical efficacy of antiviral therapy for COVID-19, including drugs based on convalescent plasma, monoclonal antibodies, interferons, fusion inhibitors, nucleoside analogs, protease inhibitors, and antisense oligonucleotides.

Dissection of Antibody Responses of Gam-COVID-Vac-Vaccinated Subjects Suggests Involvement of Epitopes Outside RBD in SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization

Maria Byazrova, Pia Gattinger, Ekaterina Astakhova, Gerhard Hofer, Musa Khaitov, Alexander Filatov, Rudolf Valenta

Summary: The Gam-COVID-Vac vaccine induces significant increases in IgG(1) antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in both naive and convalescent individuals. In addition to antibodies specific for the receptor-binding domain (RBD), antibodies against a novel peptide close to the N-terminus of RBD were also found to be associated with virus-neutralization.

Summary: This study identified potential microRNA biomarkers for diagnosing melanoma and tested their diagnostic efficacy in patients and healthy control groups. It also explored significant microRNA markers in a human melanoma cell line that can be used as markers of drug anti-melanoma activity. Additionally, this study found that humic substances and chitosan have anti-melanoma activity and can reduce the level of marker microRNAs.

Identification of a Synthetic Polyhydroxyphenolic Resveratrol Analogue, 3,3′,4,4′,5,5′-Hexahydroxy-trans-Stilbene with Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Activity

Walter Jaeger, Eva Kicker, Melina Hardt, Riem Gawish, Pia Gattinger, Michaela Boehmdorfer, Sylvia Knapp, Rudolf Valenta, Kurt Zatloukal, Thomas Szekeres

Summary: The anti-viral effects of green tea ingredients and the synthetic resveratrol analogue HHS on SARS-CoV-2 were investigated. HHS demonstrated the highest reduction in virus replication and inhibited virus binding to human cells. Although the oral bioavailability of HHS is likely low, topical administration as a nose or throat spray may effectively reduce virus load. Further studies are needed to develop HHS as a treatment option for SARS-CoV-2 infection, in addition to vaccines.

Summary: This preliminary cross-sectional study aims to assess the immune protection against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus among pregnant women and healthcare workers in Russia. The results show that healthcare workers have higher levels of immunity against diphtheria and tetanus, while pregnant women have lower levels of immunity against pertussis. The significance of this study lies in revealing the vulnerability to pertussis, diphtheria, and tetanus among healthcare workers and pregnant women in different age groups under the current national immunization program in Russia.

Evtushenko, Viktor P. Truhin, Veronika I. Skvortsova

Summary: The majority of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines target the spike protein, but this study focuses on the highly conserved nucleocapsid protein. The vaccine was found to induce a strong immune response in mice, monkeys, and humans, including the production of specific antibodies and T cells. Vaccinated hamsters showed reduced lung damage and quicker recovery. This vaccine could be a valuable addition to the existing COVID-19 vaccine arsenal.

Importance, Applications and Features of Assays Measuring SARS-CoV-2 Neutralizing Antibodies

Pia Gattinger, Anna Ohradanova-Repic, Rudolf Valenta

Summary: The COVID-19 situation has stabilized but challenges remain, including the potential occurrence of highly pathogenic variants. Assays measuring SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies are crucial for predicting infection risk and evaluating protection. In vitro infection assays and molecular interaction assays studying the binding of RBD with ACE2 can determine the neutralizing capacity of antibodies and assist in vaccine development and therapy evaluation.
