Factors associated with suicide risk among Chinese adults: A prospective cohort study of 0.5 million individuals

Rongqin Yu, Yiping Chen, Liming Li, Junshi Chen, Yu Guo, Zheng Bian, Jun Lv, Canqing Yu, Xianmin Xie, Dan Huang, Zhengming Chen, Seena Fazel

Summary: In China, suicide deaths are associated with male gender, older age, rural residence, single status, family-related stressful life events, major physical illnesses, and mental disorders. Suicide is strongly linked to lifetime mental disorders, especially schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, as well as depression, generalized anxiety disorders, and sleep disorders in the past year. High-risk groups identified were elderly men in rural settings and individuals with mental disorders.

Causal Associations of Anthropometric Measurements With Fracture Risk and Bone Mineral Density: A Mendelian Randomization Study

Baoshan Ma, Chongyang Li, Jianqiao Pan, Shuzheng Zhang, Heng Dong, Yiming Wu, Jun Lv

Summary: The study investigated causal relationships between anthropometric measurements and bone mineral density (BMD) or fracture risk using Mendelian randomization (MR) methods. The results showed that an increase in height was associated with higher fracture risk and lower estimated BMD, while BMI was only causally associated with BMD. Other anthropometric measurements like WHR, HC, and WC adjusted for BMI were not found to be related to fracture occurrence or BMD.

Association between Ambient Air Pollution and MRI-Defined Brain Infarcts in Health Examinations in China

Jing Wu, Yi Ning, Yongxiang Gao, Ruiqi Shan, Bo Wang, Jun Lv, Liming Li

Summary: This study found a significant association between ambient air pollution and MRI-defined brain infarcts, with higher concentrations of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide associated with a higher risk of MRI-defined BI, especially in elderly individuals and those with high exposure levels.

Association between blood pressure categories and cardiovascular disease mortality in China

Jie Guo, Jun Lv, Yu Guo, Zheng Bian, Bang Zheng, Man Wu, Ling Yang, Yiping Chen, Jian Su, Jianqiang Zhang, Jvying Yao, Junshi Chen, Zhengming Chen, Canqing Yu, Liming Li

Summary: This study recruited 430,977 adults from China for follow-up research and found that hypertension subtypes were independently associated with cardiovascular disease mortality. The majority of hypertension subtypes had higher mortality risk than normal individuals, with stronger associations in younger adults.

Dietary Soy Consumption and Cardiovascular Mortality among Chinese People with Type 2 Diabetes

Xiaowen Wang, Jun Lv, Canqing Yu, Liming Li, Yonghua Hu, Li-Qiang Qin, Jia-Yi Dong

Summary: Randomized controlled trials have shown that consuming soy can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular death among individuals with diabetes. A study in Chinese adults with diabetes found that higher soy consumption was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular death, especially from coronary heart disease and acute myocardial infarction.

Summary: Genetic predisposition to low birth weight and childhood obesity is associated with higher risk of adult T2D, but this risk can be reduced in adulthood by adherence to a healthy lifestyle, especially among those with high genetic risk of childhood obesity.

Importance of healthy lifestyle factors and ideal cardiovascular health metrics for risk of heart failure in Chinese adults

Ruotong Yang, Jun Lv, Canqing Yu, Yu Guo, Zheng Bian, Yuting Han, Ling Yang, Yiping Chen, Huaidong Du, Jianjun Liu, Chan Qu, Junshi Chen, Zhengming Chen, Robert Clarke, Tao Huang, Liming Li

Summary: The study found that higher levels of healthy lifestyle factors and ideal cardiovascular health metrics were inversely associated with the risk of heart failure, and combining lifestyle factors with cardiometabolic factors improved the prediction of heart failure compared to healthy lifestyle factors alone.

Summary: This study found significant observational associations between RHR and cardiometabolic traits, with MR analyses showing that genetically predicted higher RHR was associated with elevated diastolic blood pressure, CRP, triglycerides, and waist-hip ratio. Conversely, higher genetically predicted SBP, TG, glucose, and WHR, and lower HDL, were associated with increased RHR.

Summary: This study evaluated the immunogenicity and safety of the COVID-19 vaccine in individuals aged >= 60 years with hypertension or(/and) diabetes. The vaccine showed good immunogenicity with a seroconversion rate of 100% and non-inferior post-vaccination geometric mean titers compared to the healthy population. The rates of vaccine-related adverse reactions were low and no serious adverse events were reported. The vaccine was well-tolerated and effective in this population.

Man Li, Qing Han, Ziqi Pan, Kailu Wang, Junqing Xie, Bang Zheng, Jun Lv

Summary: Medical students are prone to sleep disorders, and poor dormitory environment and roommate behavior can exacerbate this issue. This study aimed to assess the effects of a comprehensive intervention on dormitory environment and roommate behavior among medical college students in China. The findings showed that the intervention was associated with improved sleep quality and a reduced influence of roommates on sleep schedules.

Ethnic differences of genetic risk and smoking in lung cancer: two prospective cohort studies

Meng Zhu, Jun Lv, Yanqian Huang, Hongxia Ma, Ni Li, Xiaoxia Wei, Mengmeng Ji, Zhimin Ma, Ci Song, Cheng Wang, Juncheng Dai, Fengwei Tan, Yu Guo, Robin Walters, Iona Y. Millwood, Rayjean J. Hung, David C. Christiani, Canqing Yu, Guangfu Jin, Zhengming Chen, Qingyi Wei, Christopher Amos, Zhibin Hu, Liming Li, Hongbing Shen

Summary: The study reveals that the role of genetic background contributes to the difference in smoking-related risk of lung cancer between European populations and East Asians. Chinese-specific and European-specific polygenic risk scores (PRSs) show differences, particularly in smoking-related genetic loci. The PRSs are consistently associated with lung cancer risk, with a stronger association observed in smokers of European populations. An interaction between genetic risk and smoking is significant in the UK population, but not in the Chinese population. The higher incidence of lung cancer in nonsmokers of East Asian ethnicity and ethnic differences in genetic factors contribute to the disparity in smoking-related risk of lung cancer.
