Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are broad-spectrum insecticides. One of the commonly used OPs is diazinon (DZN). The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunotoxic effect of DZN on phagocytic parameters of blood leukocytes using the teleost fish Oreochromis niloticus as a study model. For this purpose, fish were exposed in vivo to 0.97, 1.95 and 3.97 mg/L of DZN for 6 and 24 h. Our results indicated that phagocytic active cells decreased in fish exposed in vivo to 0.97 and 1.95 mg/L of DZN for 6 and 24 h. Regarding ROS production, H2O2 and O-2(-) levels were higher on fish exposed to 1.95 mg/L for 6 and 24 h, while H2O2 production increased at 0.97 mg/L for 24 h. From this we can conclude that phagocytic parameters are sensitive to assess the effect of acute intoxication with organophosphorus pesticides on Nile tilapia.

Ex vivo treatment with fucoidan of mononuclear cells from SARS-CoV-2 infected patients

K. J. G. Diaz-Resendiz, G. A. Toledo-Ibarra, R. Ruiz-Manzano, D. A. Giron Perez, C. E. Covantes-Rosales, A. B. Benitez-Trinidad, K. M. Ramirez-Ibarra, A. T. Hermosillo Escobedo, I Gonzalez-Navarro, G. H. Ventura-Ramon, A. Romero Castro, D. Alam Escamilla, A. Y. Bueno-Duran, Manuel Ivan Giron-Perez

Summary: The study investigated the effects of fucoidan on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells from COVID-19 patients, finding that fucoidan does not induce cytotoxicity or senescence, but does increase intracellular calcium flux and promote recovery of mitochondrial membrane potential in COVID-19 recovered females. This suggests that fucoidan may improve the immune response in COVID-19 patients.

Milton Rafael Camacho-Perez, Carlos Eduardo Covantes-Rosales, Gladys Alejandra Toledo-Ibarra, Ulises Mercado-Salgado, Maria Dolores Ponce-Regalado, Karina Janice Guadalupe Diaz-Resendiz, Manuel Ivan Giron-Perez

Summary: This article reviews the impact of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) on the inflammatory process in humans and other animal models, discussing the molecular mechanisms underlying the cholinergic dysregulation caused by OPs and potential therapeutic targets to inhibit inflammation.

Summary: The present study compared the mitochondrial membrane potential (Delta psi(m)) in COVID-19 patients and recovered individuals, and found a decrease in Delta psi(m) compared to healthy controls. Particularly, a significant decrease was observed in females among the recovered individuals. These findings suggest a potential association between the loss of Delta psi(m) and long-COVID.

Summary: This study analyzed different parameters in outpatients and hospitalized patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 to determine if hematic biometry can be used for prognosis. It found that hospitalized patients had decreased levels of erythrocytes, hematocrit, and hemoglobin, as well as lymphocytopenia, while outpatients showed normal levels of neutrophils and lymphocytopenia. The study concluded that hematic biometry can serve as a biomarker, and the relationship between neutrophils and lymphocytes is important for understanding disease development and prognosis.

The role of miRNA in prostate cancer diagnosis, prognosis and treatment response: a narrative review

Summary: Prostate cancer is the most common tumor in males and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Current screening methods are not sensitive or specific enough, leading to unnecessary interventions. The current prognostic strategies are invasive and there is a lack of tools for predicting tumor progression and treatment response. miRNAs show promise as biomarkers for screening, surveillance, prognosis and treatment response in prostate cancer.

Summary: Organophosphate pesticides (OPs) have widespread use and can impact the immune response and defense mechanisms of non-target organisms. This review explores the toxic effects of OPs on the immune system of invertebrates and vertebrates, highlighting the need for more research on non-target species and understanding their susceptibility to infectious diseases. The study underscores the importance of assessing the individual and ecological impact of OPs in order to protect populations and ecosystems.

Summary: This research aimed to estimate the time and occupancy required in a physical space to reach CO2 levels that exceed the risk level established as a safer condition of 700 ppm for SARS-CoV-2 transmission. It was found that natural ventilation is the best option to reduce CO2 concentration, while air conditioners are suggested for rooms without natural ventilation solely for temperature control.
