The increasing load of nanoplastic pollution in the environment has become a major concern toward human and environmental safety. The current investigation mainly focused on assessing the toxic behavior of nanoplastics (polystyrene nano-spheres (PNS)) toward blood cells and marine crustacean. The study also investigated the temporal stability of PNS under different water matrices and its size-dependent sedimentation behavior in the sea water dispersion. The nano-dispersion showed mean particle size of 561.4 +/- 0.80 and 613.7 +/- 0.11nm for PNS 1 and 781.4 +/- 0.80 and 913.7 +/- 0.11nm for PNS 2 in lake and seawater, respectively after 48-h incubation, which is 8-fold increase from its original size. The LC50 value against Artemia salina and lymphocytes were found to be 4.82 and 8.79g/mL, and 75g/mL, respectively for PNS 1 and PNS 2. The genotoxic study reveals that around 50% of lymphocytes were affected by both PNS at 50g/mL concentration, whereas the cytotoxic studies on RBC and lymphocytes showed 50% toxicity only at 100g/mL concentration. The genotoxic study displayed numerous tri- and multi-nucleated cells. The biochemical profile of A. salina exposed to lethal concentration demonstrated a significant decrease in the total protein, reduced glutathione, and catalase activity and increase in lipid peroxidation activity as a result of PNS permeation to tissues. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that the polystyrene nano-spheres are emerging pollutant in the environment and are hazardous to humans.

Interactions of natural colloids with microplastics in aquatic environment and its impact on FTIR characterization of polyethylene and polystyrene microplastics

Pazhamthavalathil Anil Athulya, Natarajan Chandrasekaran

Summary: The demand for plastics is expected to rise due to the exponential growth of the manufacturing sector. The plastic industries receive subsidies to boost foreign exchange. Mismanagement of plastic waste has caused contamination of water bodies with macro, micro, and nano plastics, leading to toxicological impairment in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The study investigates the interaction of polystyrene and polyethylene microplastics with natural colloids in waters, observing the formation of an eco-corona layer and its impact on detection methods.

Summary: Marine actinomycetes are under-explored but have the potential to be a source of novel bacterial species. In this study, 16 bacterial strains were isolated using Actinomycetes Isolation Agar medium, and two of them showed antibacterial activity against shrimp pathogens. One of the strains, Bacillus licheniformis VIT02, exhibited potent antibacterial properties. The bioactive compounds extracted from B. licheniformis were found to have antimicrobial properties and showed promise as antimicrobial drugs. The study also demonstrated the effectiveness of the bioactive compounds in treating A. hydrophila infection in M. rosenbergii.

Unmasking effects of masks: Microplastics released from disposable surgical face masks induce toxic effects in microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus and Chlorella sp.

Soupam Das, N. Chandrasekaran, Amitava Mukherjee

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, improper disposal of face masks has led to them becoming a significant source of microplastics and nano plastics in the environment. This study quantified and characterized the microplastics released from different layers of masks and investigated their effects on two algal species. The results showed negative impacts on cell viability, photosynthetic yield, and electron transport rate, as well as increased oxidative stress markers and antioxidant enzyme levels. Optical microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy confirmed morphological and chemical changes in the algae. The study highlights the environmental risks posed by microplastics released from surgical face masks and emphasizes the need for further research on their impacts.

Antibacterial activity of a novel compound isolated from Bacillus licheniformis for treating bacterial infections in fishes: An in-silico approach

Haimanti Mondal, D. Delsy Gnana Silvia, I. Arnold Emerson, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Amitava Mukherjee, John Thomas

Summary: Seven novel compounds were extracted from the ethyl acetate extract of a novel marine bacterium Bacillus licheniformis, which were identified using GC-MS. One bioactive compound with potent antibacterial activity was virtually screened and found to satisfy Lipinski's rule, making it suitable for preventing infection by A. hydrophila and V. parahemolyticus. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations showed strong binding efficacy of the bioactive compound against the core proteins of the two pathogens. In vitro toxicity analysis revealed the non-toxic nature of the ethyl acetate extract. Thus, the bioactive compound of B. licheniformis was proven to be a potent antibacterial agent against A. hydrophila and V. parahemolyticus.

Summary: Both BPA and PSNPs are commonly found in consumer products and pose serious threats to the environment and aquatic life. This study examined the toxic effects of PS-NPs and BPA on the microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus, as well as the impact of algal EPS on their interaction. The results showed that EPS-containing mixtures reduced toxicity by decreasing reactive oxygen species levels, antioxidant enzyme activity, and cell membrane damage, leading to improved photosynthetic pigment content in the cells.

Namrata Roy, Krishnan Kannabiran, Amitava Mukherjee

Summary: Ferrocene functionalized rGO-ZnO nanocomposite was synthesized via hydrothermal method and showed superior photocatalytic activity in the degradation of pharmaceuticals under UV C light. The integration of Fc@rGO and ZnO enhanced light harvesting, charge carrier interface, and charge separation, leading to a fivefold increase in removal efficiency compared to pristine ZnO. The nanocomposite also exhibited low toxicity and reusability for multiple cycles, making it environmentally sustainable and suitable for practical applications in antibiotic treatment.

Polystyrene nanoplastics alter the ecotoxicological effects of diclofenac on freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus

Abisha Christy Christudoss, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Amitava Mukherjee

Summary: Due to the escalating risk of plastic pollution, nanoplastics have received significant attention. A study examined the individual and combined effects of fluorescent polystyrene nanoplastics (FNPs) and diclofenac (DCF) on Scenedesmus obliquus. The toxicity of S. obliquus significantly increased upon exposure to DCF and FNPs, with oxidative stress being the major cause. When FNPs and DCF were mixed, a synergistic or antagonistic effect was observed depending on the concentrations. Oxidative stress parameters, antioxidant enzyme activity, and pigment content in the algae validated the cytotoxicity data. The study highlights the hazardous nature of nanoplastics and their co-exposure risks with pharmaceuticals.
