Summary: The study showed that short-term low dissolved oxygen increased N2O emissions, while long-term low DO decreased emissions by increasing the abundance of ammonia oxidizers in the ASP. Long-term low DO reduced AOB abundance but increased AOA, with AOA potentially inhibiting N2O production. The positive correlation between N2O emissions and nitrite concentration became insignificant after 80 days of low DO operation, suggesting that ASPs can reduce N2O production and CO2 emissions by operating with low DO and extended sludge age.

Summary: Through the use of double tracer technique and metagenomic sequencing, we found that the production of N2O in plateau wetlands is promoted by nitrifier denitrification, with the key functional genes belonging to comammox bacteria Nitrospira nitrificans. The comammox bacterial species N. nitrificans and ammonia oxidizing bacterial species Nitrosomonas europaea cooperate to produce N2O in plateau wetland sediments. Environmental factors such as elevation and total organic matter influence the cooperation pattern via N. nitrificans, thus affecting N2O production activity in plateau wetland sediments.

Summary: This study proposed a real-time aeration scheme based on nitrite concentration to control the competition between nitrite oxidizing bacteria (XNOB) and Anammox bacteria (XANA) in single-stage Anammox processes. The simulation results showed that maintaining dissolved oxygen (DO) at around 0.10 mg-O2/L was ideal for effective nitrite creation by ammonia oxidizing bacteria (XAOB) while slowing down the growth of XNOB. Nitrite concentration was found to be the rate-limiting parameter for efficient nitrogen removal in single-stage Anammox processes.

Summary: The study found that higher concentrations of FNA than previously reported can release more organic matter, which may be beneficial for wastewater treatment plants. The demand for organic compounds for denitrification may constitute up to 86% of total released SCOD and must be considered. Moreover, increasing FNA concentrations above 6.4 mgHNO(2)-N/L did not benefit the growth of SBMP anymore.

Summary: Acidic partial nitritation (PN) is a stable method for wastewater treatment that can achieve nitrite accumulation and ammonium reduction. However, directly applying anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) to treat acid PN effluent is problematic. This study demonstrated the adaptation of anammox to acidic pH in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), achieving high nitrogen removal efficiency. The presence of biofilm plays a critical role in protecting anammox bacteria in acidic environments.

Summary: The study shows that dosing magnesium hydroxide in sewer systems has various benefits on downstream treatment processes, including increasing sewage pH, reducing sulfide and methane concentrations, and increasing alkalinity and volatile fatty acids concentration in sewer effluent. Dosing magnesium hydroxide can also improve ammonium oxidation and NOx reduction rates in cases with limited alkalinity and carbon sources availability, without detrimental effects on anaerobic sludge digesters. Furthermore, the use of magnesium hydroxide dosing can potentially reduce downstream chemical demand and costs for carbon sources, pH adjustment, and sludge dewatering.
