The human gastrointestinal tract hosts a complex and vast microbial community with up to 10(11) - 10(12) microorganisms colonizing the colon. The gut microbiota has a serious effect on homeostasis and pathogenesis through a number of mechanisms. In recent years, the relationship between the intestinal microbiota and sporadic colorectal cancer has attracted much scientific interest. Mechanisms underlying colonic carcinogenesis include the conversion of procarcinogenic diet-related factors to carcinogens and the stimulation of procarcinogenic signaling pathways in luminal epithelial cells. Understanding each of these mechanisms will facilitate future studies, leading to the development of novel strategies for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of colorectal cancer. In this review, we discuss the relationship between colorectal cancer and the intestinal microbiota.

SARS-CoV-2 infection and venous thromboembolism after surgery: an international prospective cohort study

E. Li

Summary: Surgical patients with peri-operative or recent SARS-CoV-2 infection are at increased risk of postoperative venous thromboembolism compared to those without a history of SARS-CoV-2. However, the optimal prophylaxis and treatment for venous thromboembolism in this patient population remains unknown. Venous thromboembolism is independently associated with 30-day mortality.

Core Needle Biopsy in the Diagnosis of Thyroid Nodules

Erhan Aysan, Beril Guler, Tugce Kiran, Ufuk O. Idiz

Summary: Core needle biopsy is a highly sensitive, specific, and reliable method for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. It can be performed by a single physician and does not require on-site pathological analysis. The procedure has a low incidence of complications and non-diagnostic rates.

The role of serum nesfatin-1 in a rat model of acute pancreatitis

Ayse Gul Ferlengez, Cihad Tatar, Mahmut Said Degerli, Adil Koyuncu, Fatih Alper Ahlatci, Ali Emre Nayci, Aziz Ari, Ufuk Oguz Idiz

Summary: This study investigated the utility of serum nesfatin-1 levels in the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis (AP). The results showed a considerable decrease in serum nesfatin-1 levels in parallel to the severity of pancreatitis, suggesting its potential as a diagnostic and severity marker in AP.

Is peripheral blood immunophenotyping useful to understand the etiology of Idiopathic Granulomatous?

Selim Dogan, Fatih Dal, Mert Guler, Husnu Sevik, Ufuk Oguz Idiz

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the immunophenotyping of immune cells in order to help clarify the etiopathogenesis of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM). The study included patients with IGM and healthy volunteers, and found that there were changes in certain cell types in IGM patients that were similar to cell profiles of some autoimmune diseases.

Effect of bariatric surgery procedures on serum cytokine and Nesfatin-1 levels

Furkan Turkoglu, Mert Guler, Hasan Erdem, Mehmet Gencturk, Erdem Kinaci, Cihad Tatar, Ufuk Oguz Idiz

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in Nesfatin-1 and serum cytokine levels in patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery. The results showed that weight loss surgery led to improvements in body weight, excess body weight, blood glucose levels, liver function markers, inflammation markers, and certain cytokines.

Illuminating insights: Exploring the effect of 16/8 intermittent fasting on serum cytokine levels in overweight adults

Cemile Idiz, Ufuk Oguz Idiz

Summary: Intermittent fasting has positive effects on obesity-induced inflammation and promotes an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines while decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines. IL-33 is strongly negatively correlated with BMI change over time.

Clinical and Laboratory Parameters for Differential Diagnosis of Necrotizing Faciitis and Cellulitis

Hasan Okmen, Nagehan Didem Sari, Kivilcim Ulusan, Abdurrahman Tunay, Ufuk Oguz Idiz

Summary: Clinical and laboratory parameters play important roles in the differential diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis and cellulitis patients, including fever, blood count results, and biochemical markers. For cellulitis patients with high levels of leukocytes, platelets, and neutrophils, clinicians should closely monitor the patient's clinical course and consider the possibility of necrotizing fasciitis.

Comparison of Spinal Anesthesia vs. Local Infiltration Anesthesia in Postoperative Pain in Patients Undergoing Sinusectomy Surgery

Abdurrahman Tunay, Mert Guler, Mert Ali Dolek, Selim Dogan, Ozlem Atesal, Sevim Baltali, Hasan Okmen, Mensure Yilmaz Cakirgoz, Meral Kurt Durmus, Ufuk Oguz Idiz, Mehmet Toptas

Summary: This study compared local infiltration anesthesia (LIA) and spinal anesthesia (SA) for postoperative pain levels in patients with pilonidal sinus disease. The results showed that the pain scores with LIA were lower than SA at 8 hours and 24 hours postoperatively. There were no statistically significant differences in recurrence rates and age between the two groups. Therefore, LIA may be suggested as the anesthetic technique for pilonidal surgery.

Status of Appendiceal Neoplasms in Acute Appendicitis Cases

Ekrem Cakar, Mert Mahsuni Sevinc, Sukru Colak, Mete Demir, Enver Yarikkaya, Ufuk Oguz Idiz

Summary: Primary ANs are rare and easily overlooked, and patients with AN may have AA-like clinical presentation. This study analyzed a total of 2,906 patients who underwent appendectomy, and found that the prevalence of AN was 2.82%. Patients with AN were notably older and had a higher rate of perforation and diverticula compared to those with AA. The most common neoplasm was low-grade mucinous adenoma, followed by precancerous serrated adenoma and carcinoid tumor. Carcinoid tumors were mostly located at the tip of the appendix. No lymphovascular invasion or distant metastasis was observed in any of the patients.

The Importance of Mapping Vagus and Laryngeal Nerves Monitoring During Thyroid Surgery

Selim Dogan, Serkan Sari, Kivilcim Ulusan, Gungor Uzum, Ufuk Oguz Idiz

Summary: This study determined the location of thyroid-related nerves by nerve monitoring and demonstrated the usefulness of Nerve Integrity Monitor in thyroid surgery. The results showed variations in the location of the vagus nerve, recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), and superior laryngeal nerve (SLN). Surgeon experience and anatomical markers alone were insufficient in preventing nerve injuries, highlighting the importance of preoperative nerve monitoring for clearer identification of these variations and improved surgical safety.
