Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass is a crucial resource for expanding biogas production, and research on pretreatment technologies to enhance biomass conversion is a rapidly growing field. This study analyzed seven different types of lignocellulosic biomass and identified key characteristics for effective pretreatment. A simple ammonia pretreatment was used as a case study and partial least squares regression was employed to model the methane yield and efficiency of the pretreatment. The results showed that lipid, ash, protein, and hemicellulose/lignin content were the most decisive factors in predicting pretreatment efficiency.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance and microbial community structure of a dark fermentation process using tequila vinasse as a substrate. It found that the addition of external nutrients significantly influenced hydrogen production, and maintaining a suitable C/N ratio was crucial for the balance and syntrophy between lactic acid bacteria and bioH(2) producers. The biohythane process resulted in higher bioenergy recovery compared to single-stage anaerobic digestion.

Summary: The article addresses the issue of process safety in municipal wastewater treatment plants, creating a database of 232 accidents and analyzing their causes, consequences, and prevention methods. The most common cause of accidents is device or structural failure, with environmental damage being the most frequent consequence. Extreme weather conditions account for 13% of all accidents at WWTPs, indicating a need for operators to prepare for an increase in such incidents.

Summary: This paper examines the use of secondary plant metabolites (tannins) to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (CH4, CO2, NOx) and their mixture (biogas) during the storage of digestate. The experiment involved applying tannin preparations to the digestate in different concentrations and observing their effects on biogas production and gas content. The results showed that TR preparation at 1.0% and 2.0% concentrations significantly reduced biogas production and inhibited CH4 development, while other preparations containing TA and TC increased biogas, CH4, and CO2 production compared to the control group.

Summary: This paper presents experimental measurements of aerosol particle count in the cleanroom air of a biotechnology laboratory for DNA analysis. The measurements show compliance with ISO cleanroom requirements for class 7, while the laboratory cleanroom is classified as ISO class 8. The particle count values vary with the month but are not affected much by the measurement location. The results indicate that the laboratory is not suitable for DNA tests due to microbiological contamination, and strategies to improve the situation are proposed.

Summary: Sulfur is a vital element for all living things, playing a role in proteins and other organic substances. The diversity of microbes in nature enables the transformation of this element. Although present in trace amounts in food, volatile sulfur compounds are essential. The understanding of sulfur metabolism in the colon's eukaryotic cells is better than in gastrointestinal bacteria, but additional microbial processes may also impact sulfated compounds and intestinal sulfur metabolism. The focus on hydrogen sulfide and its potential effects on colonic health remains unclear. Taurine serves various purposes, including inflammation and protection, and is the primary sulfur component in muscle tissue.
