With growing demand for clean and cheap energy resources, biogas production is emerging as an ideal solution, as it provides relatively cheap and clean energy, while also tackling the problematic production of excessive organic waste from crops and animal agriculture. Behind this process stands a variety of anaerobic microorganisms, which turn organic substrates into valuable biogas. The biogas itself is a mixture of gases, produced mostly as metabolic byproducts of the microorganisms, such as methane, hydrogen, or carbon dioxide. Hydrogen itself figures as a potent bio-fuel, however in many bioreactors it serves as the main substrate of methanogenesis, thus potentially limiting biogas yield. With help of modern sequencing techniques, we tried to evaluate the composition in eight bioreactors using different input materials, showing shifts in the microbial consortia depending on the substrate itself. In this paper, we provide insight on the occurrence of potentially harmful microorganisms such as Clostridium novyi and Clostridium septicum, as well as key genera in hydrogen production, such as Clostridiumstercorarium, Mobilitalea sp., Herbinix sp., Herbivorax sp., and Acetivibrio sp.

Possibility of using tannins to control greenhouse gas production during digestate storage

Antonin Kintl, Tereza Hammerschmiedt, Tomas Vitez, Martin Brtnicky, Karel Vejrazka, Igor Hunady, Oldrich Latal, Jakub Elbl

Summary: This paper examines the use of secondary plant metabolites (tannins) to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (CH4, CO2, NOx) and their mixture (biogas) during the storage of digestate. The experiment involved applying tannin preparations to the digestate in different concentrations and observing their effects on biogas production and gas content. The results showed that TR preparation at 1.0% and 2.0% concentrations significantly reduced biogas production and inhibited CH4 development, while other preparations containing TA and TC increased biogas, CH4, and CO2 production compared to the control group.

Particle Number of Aerosol in Specific Conditions of Biotechnology Laboratory Cleanroom

Petr Junga, Petr Travnicek, Tomas Vitez, Gabrielle Machu, Juraj Ruzbarsky

Summary: This paper presents experimental measurements of aerosol particle count in the cleanroom air of a biotechnology laboratory for DNA analysis. The measurements show compliance with ISO cleanroom requirements for class 7, while the laboratory cleanroom is classified as ISO class 8. The particle count values vary with the month but are not affected much by the measurement location. The results indicate that the laboratory is not suitable for DNA tests due to microbiological contamination, and strategies to improve the situation are proposed.

Sulfur content in foods and beverages and its role in human and animal metabolism: A scoping review of recent studies

Dani Dordevic, Jana Capikova, Simona Dordevic, Bohuslava Tremlova, Mario Gajdacs, Ivan Kushkevych

Summary: Sulfur is a vital element for all living things, playing a role in proteins and other organic substances. The diversity of microbes in nature enables the transformation of this element. Although present in trace amounts in food, volatile sulfur compounds are essential. The understanding of sulfur metabolism in the colon's eukaryotic cells is better than in gastrointestinal bacteria, but additional microbial processes may also impact sulfated compounds and intestinal sulfur metabolism. The focus on hydrogen sulfide and its potential effects on colonic health remains unclear. Taurine serves various purposes, including inflammation and protection, and is the primary sulfur component in muscle tissue.
