Sustainable supply chain management has received much attention from both academia and industry due to various issues such as economic stability, environment conservation, and social ethics. To improve the sustainable performance of a value chain, its members need to carefully select their suppliers in relation to their own strategy. Thus, an effective tool for sustainable supplier selection and evaluation is essential, which considers the triple bottom line (TBL) of economic, environmental and social aspects by means of criteria adapted to the situation analysed. This paper develops a fuzzy decision tool to evaluate the sustainable performance of suppliers according to TBL. Sustainability criteria are identified to take into account the real hotspots in a food value chain. The proposed model integrates triangular fuzzy numbers (TEN), AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) in a novel way to consider quantitative and qualitative criteria as well as objective and subjective data. This is missing in most existing research when building their fuzzy models for supplier selection, but critical in dealing with the heterogeneous data available for TBL assessment. The application in a sustainable agrifood value chain illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed tool.

Facilitating Aligned Co-Decisions for More Sustainable Food Value Chains

Gaelle Petit, Gwenola Yannou-Le Bris, Claudia Eckert, Yan Liu

Summary: The transition of existing food value chains towards greater sustainability is a societal imperative and a potential competitive factor. While collaboration can have a positive impact on joint decision-making in value chains, the objectives of upstream and downstream actors often remain different, driven by economic difficulties and consumer demands, respectively.

Relocation of food systems within territories: which framework of analysis in ergonomics? A case study in the Saclay plateau

Chloe Le Bail, Marianne Cerf, Gwenola Yannou-Le Bris

Summary: The relocation of food systems in territories aims to reconnect agriculture and food, and address sustainable development challenges. This requires ergonomics and involves work transformations. The study in the article focuses on the supply of local products to staff canteens in Paris-Saclay, highlighting the ongoing redesign of coordination processes by actors to support the development of the local food system. The article proposes an approach to inter-organisational change resulting from the re-localization of food in territories, defining it as a collective design process involving both intra-organisational and inter-organisational coordination re-design.

Assessing Suppliers for Complex Products From the Perspective of Power

Yan Liu, Claudia M. Eckert, Chris Earl

Summary: Innovation and supplier selection are closely related, as suppliers are involved in product development and complement companies' capabilities. Strategic relationships require flexible suppliers, but high flexibility does not guarantee cooperation. Companies need power to make suppliers flexible. The study in this article shows that the relative power between companies and suppliers influences supplier responsiveness to requests.

Sustainability assessment in innovation design processes: place, role, and conditions of use in agrifood systems. A review

Aurelie Perrin, Gwenola Yannou-Le Bris, Frederique Angevin, Caroline Penicaud

Summary: In the face of ecological and social crisis in agrifood systems, a transformation towards systemic and sustainable innovations is necessary. Sustainability assessments are commonly used to identify and validate improvements in sustainability in comparison to existing standards. This study reviews the role and use of sustainability assessments in the design process of innovations in agrifood systems, highlighting three types of assessments: initial diagnosis, screening solutions, and evaluation at different stages. Key points are discussed, including criteria and indicators, stakeholder involvement, adaptive nature of assessment, and consideration of uncertainty, providing guidance for efficient assessment in designing innovations for sustainable agrifood systems.
