Several marine Debaryomyces hansenii strains have shown probiotic effects on aquatic animals, and D. hansenii-derived -glucans have recently provided immunostimulant effects on goat leukocytes. This study assessed the probiotic effects of live yeast D. hansenii CBS 8339 on newborn goats administered orally, and subsequently challenged in vitro with Escherichia coli. D. hansenii CBS 8339 demonstrated the capacity to survive gastrointestinal tract conditions (bile salts and acid pH tolerance) and adhere to goat intestine. Twelve Saanen x Nubian crossbred newborn goats (2.9 +/- 0.47kg) were fed with a controlled diet or D. hansenii (0.7g/kg body weight per day)-supplemented milk for 30days. Blood samples of newborn goats were taken at days 15 and 30, and peripheral blood leukocytes were isolated for bacterial challenge, and immunological and antioxidant analyses. Despite cell viability was higher in leukocytes of goat kids fed with the yeast supplement, protection against E. coli challenge was not significantly affected. On the other hand, at day 15, oral administration of D. hansenii enhanced respiratory burst and catalase activity and increased superoxide dismutase activity after challenge. In contrast, at day 30, administration of the yeast supplement increased peroxidase activity and enhanced nitric oxide production and catalase activity after challenge. Finally, the yeast-supplemented diet upregulated the expression of the receptor genes TLR (2, 4, 6), modulator genes Raf.1, Syk, and Myd88, transcription factor gene AP-1, and cytokine genes IL-1 and TNF- only at day 15 in leukocytes from unchallenged goat kids. These results demonstrated that a short time (15days) of orally administering the probiotic D. hansenii CBS 8339 to newborn goats stimulated innate immune and antioxidant parameters and the expression of immune-related gene signaling pathways.

Implication of mucus-secreting cells, acidophilic granulocytes and monocytes/macrophages in the resolution of skin inflammation caused by subcutaneous injection of λ/κ-carrageenin to gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) specimens

Jose Carlos Campos-Sanchez, Enrica Vitarelli, Francisco A. Guardiola, Diana Ceballos-Francisco, Jose Maria Garcia Beltran, Antonio Ieni, Maria Angeles Esteban

Summary: This study evaluated local inflammation mechanisms in the skin of gilthead seabream induced by carrageenin, finding an increase in skin mucus-secreting cells and acidophilic granulocytes after injection. Gene expression of various markers and proinflammatory genes was also up-regulated post-injection. Results indicate the chronological involvement of important immune cells in resolving inflammation in the fish skin.

Summary: Vaccines have been crucial in saving millions of humans and animals from fatal diseases. While subunit vaccines have several advantages, they lack strong immunogenicity. Nanotechnology offers a promising approach to vaccine development, utilizing nanoparticles as carriers and adjuvants, particularly for oral vaccines. This review provides an update on recent developments in oral organic nanovaccines, discussing suitable nanomaterials for oral vaccine design and advancements in fighting the major pathogens causing human and animal diseases over the past five years.

Summary: In recent years, microalgal biotechnology has been recognized as a valuable source of functional feed additives for fish species. Numerous microalgae have demonstrated immunostimulant properties and enhanced disease resistance in fish. This literature review aims to gather and present research on the immune modulation effects of microalgae and their compounds in farmed fish, highlighting their potential for aquaculture. Although the exact mechanisms remain unclear, the inclusion of different microalgal species in fish feed has proven to improve the immune response and increase survival under stress and infectious conditions.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of Debaryomyces hansenii CBS 8339 on innate immune responses in mice. The results showed that oral delivery of D. hansenii for 7 days enhanced phagocytosis, respiratory burst activity, and nitric oxide production in mice before and after bacterial challenge. It also upregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines on day 7, but downregulated them on day 15. Furthermore, D. hansenii increased serum IgG and IgA titers in mice. Overall, short-term oral delivery of D. hansenii improved immune innate response in mice.

Summary: The current study compares the antibacterial activity of zinc oxide nanostructures. The quasi-diamond platelet-shaped nanostructures showed enhanced antibacterial activity compared to the quasi-round agglomerated particles. The morphology plays a crucial role in the antimicrobial activity, while the enrichment of oxygen vacancies does not have a significant effect.

Use of Trehalose as an Additive to Bacteriophage Vb_Pd_PDCC-1: Long-Term Preservation Analysis and Its Biocontrol Against Vibrio diabolicus Infection

Luis Daniel Moreno-Figueroa, Eduardo Quiroz-Guzman, Dariel Tovar-Ramirez, Gabriela Palestino, Candida A. Cisneros-Covarrubias, Luis Hernandez-Adame

Summary: Phage therapy is a promising alternative to control bacterial diseases. This research evaluated the viability of lyophilized vibrio phage vB_Pd_PDCC-1 using trehalose as a preservative excipient. The results showed that trehalose is beneficial in maintaining the viability of post-lyophilization phages, even at room temperature. The use of lyophilized phage PDCC-1 increased brine shrimp survival and reduced Vibrio concentrations.

Summary: The development of alternative plant protein sources in aquaculture is a major challenge due to the high cost and continued shortage of animal protein sources. In this study, the effects of Tithonia diversifolia on the growth performance, feed efficiency, and metabolic biochemistry of Oreochromis mossambicus x Oreochromis niloticus juveniles were investigated. The results showed that T. diversifolia flour has an appropriate chemical composition and amino acid balance, without causing negative effects on the growth performance and metabolic biochemistry of the fish.
