White bass (Morone chrysops), striped bass and their interspecific hybrid are important game fishes, whereas the hybrid striped bass is an important aquaculture species in the US. Numerous state, federal and private hatcheries, therefore, rear these species for stocking purposes as well as for food fish. Although striped bass populations (both wild and domesticated) have been extensively evaluated, relatively little effort has been directed toward the study and improvement of white bass. In this study, we developed SNP resources to examine the genetic relationships among a long-term domesticated white bass line and five potential founder stocks for selective breeding collected from drainages in Arkansas, Texas and Alabama. Using genotyping-by-sequencing, we generated 13 872 genome-wide SNP loci across the six populations. Stringent filtering of SNP-calling parameters identified 426 informative SNP loci. Population genetic and structure analyses using these loci revealed only moderate genetic differentiation between populations (global F-st = 0.083) and indicated two major genetic clusters. A final 57-SNP assay was successfully designed and validated using the MassARRAY system. The developed SNP panel assigned 96 additional genotyped individuals to their population of origin with 100% accuracy. The SNP resources developed in this study should facilitate ongoing efforts in selective breeding and conservation of white bass.

Differential susceptibility of white bass(Morone chrysops), striped bass (Morone saxatillis) and hybrid striped bass (M. chrysops x M. saxatillis) toFlavobacterium columnareand effects of mucus on bacterial growth and biofilm development

Summary: The study investigates the losses caused by columnaris disease in freshwater fish species, particularly hybrid striped bass, and reveals differential susceptibilities between different parental species, as well as the relationship between mucus and bacterial growth and biofilm formation.

Summary: Flavobacterium columnare, a pathogen that causes columnaris disease in freshwater fish, poses a major threat to sustainable aquaculture. Researchers have identified a genetically manipulable strain, MS-FC-4, which has facilitated the identification of virulence factors. Deletion of core genes eliminates virulence, and several secreted proteins have been identified as important for pathogenicity.

Complex introgression among three diverged largemouth bass lineages

Summary: Hybrid zones between closely related black bass lineages provide valuable insights into the evolutionary processes related to speciation. Through DNA analysis, it was discovered that the Delta bass populations in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta stem from a recently diverged lineage of Largemouth Bass. The study supports a revision of the native ranges for the intergrade zone and M. floridanus, with significant implications for fisheries management.

Transcriptomic profiles of Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) gill following infection by the ectoparasite Amyloodinium ocellatum

Dongdong Zhang, Haitham Mohammed, Zhi Ye, Melanie A. Rhodes, Wilawan Thongda, Honggang Zhao, Lauren N. Jescovitch, S. Adam Fuller, D. Allen Davis, Eric Peatman

Summary: This study simulated the natural infection of Amyloodinium ocellatum in cultured pompano and compared the gene expression in the gills of infected and control fish to explore the molecular mechanisms of infection. The results revealed differentially expressed genes associated with immune response, inflammation, reactive oxygen species, tissue repair, apoptosis, respiratory gas sensing, and lipid metabolism. This information can be utilized for disease surveillance, selection for host resistance, and development of therapeutic measures.

Summary: The study focuses on the development and validation of a TaqMan qPCR assay for the accurate and early detection of piscine lactococcosis. The developed assay showed high specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy in detecting the causative agents, as well as screening fish and environmental samples. This qPCR assay provides a reliable tool for diagnosing and managing piscine lactococcosis in fish farms and aquariums.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of cyclic thermal stress on histological characteristics and gene expression in the breast muscles of different breeds of chickens. The results showed that thermal stress led to reduced growth performance and breast weight, as well as increased moisture content in the breast meat. Additionally, the extent of adipose infiltration and inflammation in the breast muscles varied among different chicken breeds.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that genes in the GPCR superfamily play an important role in molting in crustaceans. In this study, four forms of GPCRs were identified in the mud crab, Scylla olivacea. These forms have common features in their structure and differ in the extracellular region. Two of these forms were found to be upregulated during molting, correlating with the demand for cholesterol used in hormone synthesis.

Summary: The effects of dietary supplementation of nanocurcumin and two doses of florfenicol on African catfish were investigated. The results showed that adding nanocurcumin increased serum total protein levels and protected against liver and kidney damage caused by florfenicol. In addition, the inclusion of nanocurcumin in the diet improved the resistance to bacterial infection.
