Summary: This study assessed the disease burden of arboviral infections in the Military Health System, the validity of arboviral diagnostic codes, and the role of pretravel counseling on insect avoidance precautions. The results showed that dengue represented the greatest burden among arboviral infections. More than 80% of subjects with arboviral infection did not receive pretravel counseling. Low rates of pretravel visits provide an opportunity for increased emphasis on insect exposure precautions.

Summary: TYK2 deficiency leads to susceptibility to mycobacterial and viral infections. A 4-year-old female with severe respiratory viral infections, EBV-driven lymphoma, and neurotropic virus infection was reported. A novel mutation in TYK2 gene was found, causing deleterious effects on its function.

Summary: This review summarizes the epidemiology of arboviral infection in Italy over the past 10 years, including both endemic and imported infections, vector distribution, and the impact of climate change on vector ecology. Strengthening surveillance systems at a national and international level is highly recommended to prepare for potential threats from arbovirus diffusion.

Summary: This study retrospectively assessed the incidence of arboviruses in cerebrospinal fluid samples of patients with neurological symptoms and found an association between arboviruses and meningitis, encephalitis, and cerebrovascular events. The findings highlight the importance of arbovirus-related neurological syndromes and the value of specific laboratory methods.

Summary: Researchers conducted mosquito surveillance in southern New Hampshire and found that 12 mosquito populations carried the JCV virus, with the highest infection rates in Aedes excrucians/stimulans and Aedes sticticus. Aedes canadensis and Coquillettidia perturbans had the lowest infection rates. Mosquitoes primarily fed on white-tailed deer, but some also fed on humans. The use of CO2 traps was effective for mosquito collection, and DNA barcoding improved the identification of damaged specimens. This study provides the first ecological overview of JCV vectors in New Hampshire.

Summary: To prepare for the emergence of new subtypes and the next pandemic, it is important to define and document the global status of animal influenza. A global database of animal influenza events was created, identifying a total of 70,472 records and 4712 events worldwide. The analysis showed that Asia had the most clusters of events, with poultry as the main host reported in Asia and Africa, and wild birds in Europe and North America. Wild birds carried a diverse range of virus subtypes, which poses a risk for the generation of reassortment viruses with pandemic potential.

Summary: From 2016 to 2018, Hidalgo County in the United States observed an increase in Zika virus infections, along with sporadic cases of Dengue virus and West Nile virus. With funding to enhance mosquito surveillance and educate residents on arboviruses, mosquito surveillance efforts increased by 1.275%, resulting in over 8000 mosquitoes collected and 28 mosquito species identified. Aedes aegypti, Ae albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus made up approximately two-thirds of the mosquitoes collected in 2018.

Summary: Northern Syria has experienced seasonal fluctuations in ILI and SARI cases, with a sharp increase in SARI cases in 2021 corresponding to a severe wave of SARS-CoV-2. Respiratory infections have caused widespread morbidity and mortality in the region. Strengthened surveillance and access to testing and treatment are crucial for managing the current outbreak.
