In last decade, there have been many research works about wireless sensor networks (WSNs) focused on improving the network performance as well as increasing the energy efficiency and communications effectiveness. Many of these new mechanisms have been implemented using the behaviors of certain animals, such as ants, bees, or schools of fish. These systems are called bioinspired systems and are used to improve aspects such as handling large-scale networks, provide dynamic nature, and avoid resource constraints, heterogeneity, unattended operation, or robustness, among many others. Therefore, this paper aims to study bioinspired mechanisms in the field of WSN, providing the concepts of these behavior patterns in which these new approaches are based. The paper will explain existing bioinspired systems in WSNs and analyze their impact on WSNs and their evolution. In addition, we will conduct a comprehensive review of recently proposed bioinspired systems, protocols, and mechanisms. Finally, this paper will try to analyze the applications of each bioinspired mechanism as a function of the imitated animal and the deployed application. Although this research area is considered an area with highly theoretical content, we intend to show the great impact that it is generating from the practical perspective.

Efficient Route Planning Using Temporal Reliance of Link Quality for Highway IoV Traffic Environment

Ritesh Yaduwanshi, Sushil Kumar, Arvind Kumar, Omprakash Kaiwartya, Deepti Deepti, Mohammad Aljaidi, Jaime Lloret

Summary: This paper proposes an efficient geocast routing (EGR) approach for highway IoV-traffic environment considering the shadowing fading condition. EGR utilizes a temporal link quality model and geometrical localization to solve the GPS outage problem and selects the next forwarding vehicle from the forward region based on temporal link quality for geocast routing. Simulation results show that EGR outperforms existing approaches in handling wireless communication link breakage and throughput issues in highway traffic environment, as well as ensuring faster message delivery.

HIDE-Healthcare IoT Data Trust ManagEment: Attribute centric intelligent privacy approach

Fasee Ullah, Chi-Man Pun, Omprakash Kaiwartya, Ali Safaa Sadiq, Jaime Lloret, Mohammed Ali

Summary: This paper proposes a healthcare IoT data privacy trust management framework called HIDE, which encrypts and decrypts sensory data using patients' attributes to ensure data privacy in cloud storage. The framework also prevents data duplication by using intelligent object pointers and develops a content-based emergency data access control to monitor multiple patient health criticalities. Security analysis and experimental evaluation confirm the advantages of the proposed HIDE framework in terms of security and privacy metrics.

Energy-Constrained Target Localization Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks Using Radial Basis Function Neural Network

Vinoth Kumar Krishnamoorthy, Usha Nandini Duraisamy, Amruta S. Jondhale, Jaime Lloret, Balaji Venkatesalu Ramasamy

Summary: This paper introduces an indoor object tracking method using received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements and wireless sensor network (WSN). The author proposes a range-free radial basis function neural network (RBFN) and Kalman filtering (KF) based algorithm named RBFN+KF to reduce the location estimation errors caused by random variations in RSSI measurements. The simulation results show that the RBFN+KF algorithm achieves lower location estimation errors compared to trilateration, multilayer perceptron (MLP), and RBFN-based estimations. Additionally, it is also observed that the RBFN-based approach is more energy efficient than trilateration and MLP-based localization approaches.

Low-Cost Microcontroller-Based Multiparametric Probe for Coastal Area Monitoring

Lorena Parra, Sandra Viciano-Tudela, David Carrasco, Sandra Sendra, Jaime Lloret

Summary: The paper presents a low-cost multiparametric probe that can be deployed in coastal areas and integrated into a wireless sensor network. The probe is composed of physical sensors capable of measuring water temperature, salinity, and total suspended solids (TSS). Calibration results show no effect of temperature on the sensors and no interference of salinity in the measuring of TSS or vice versa. The calibration models for salinity and TSS show good correlation coefficients and low mean absolute errors.

Naila Fares, Jaime Lloret, Vikas Kumar, Sander de Leeuw, Liz Barnes

Summary: This study examines the challenges of multi-tier supply chains and proposes a mathematical model to support decision-makers in formulating supply chain policies. The model takes into account the social, environmental, and economic constraints through corporate social responsibility considerations. The research findings demonstrate the importance of considering social aspects in addition to economic impact, particularly in situations with high environmental costs and low return on investment. The mathematical model is efficient in optimizing the distribution network of the entire supply chain while considering CSR concerns. This study contributes to the advancement of multi-tier supply chain optimization and provides practical insights for distribution decisions.
