Rice plants would more frequently suffer from high temperature (HT) stress at the grain-filling stage in future. A japonica rice variety Koshihikari and an indica rice variety IR72 were used to study the effect of high temperature on dynamic changes of glutamine synthetase (GS) activity, glutamate synthase (GOGAT) activity, glutamic oxalo-acetic transminase (GOT) activity, glutamate pyruvate transminase (GPT) activity in grains and grain nutritional quality at the grain-filling stage. Under HT, the activities of GOGAT, GOT, GPT and soluble protein content in grains significantly increased, whereas GS activity significantly decreased at the grain-filling stage. In addition to the increase of protein and amino acids contents, it was suggested that GOGAT, GOT and GPT in grains played important roles in nitrogen metabolism at the grain-filling stage. Since the decrease of GS activity in grains did not influence the accumulations of amino acids and protein, it is implied that GS might not be the key enzyme in regulating glutamine content in grains.

Summary: In this study, a high-density SNP genetic map was constructed for Tartary buckwheat for the first time. Major loci controlling TGW and hull type were mapped, providing valuable information for gene cloning, understanding the mechanism underlying grain development and easy dehulling, and marker-assisted selection in Tartary buckwheat.

Summary: Gravity is an important environmental factor involved in the regulation of plant architecture. A study on the creeping growth of Tartary buckwheat mutant lazy1 revealed that the mutation affected shoot negative gravitropism and resulted in dilated and distorted cells in the bending stem. The expression of gibberellin-regulated genes was up-regulated in lazy1, suggesting the involvement of gibberellin in the regulation of creeping growth. The deletion of the coding region of Pectate lyase 5 in lazy1 disrupted the pbH domain and led to abnormal cell elongation. The study highlights the role of Pectate lyase 5 in mediating primary cell wall metabolism and regulating asymmetric cell elongation in lazy1.

Summary: The antioxidant capacity and flavonoid metabolites in the bran layer of green glutinous rice were compared to other colored rice varieties. Green glutinous rice bran was found to contain higher levels of total flavonoids and anthocyanins, as well as vitamins B1 and E. It also showed potential as an effective source of antioxidants and had different metabolite synthesis compared to other varieties, indicating its unique properties.
