Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of lactase non-persistence in the Thai population and to examine the association between lactase non-persistence, milk consumption, and the risk of diabetes mellitus. The results showed a high prevalence of lactase non-persistence in the Thai population, but no significant association between lactase non-persistence and the risk of diabetes mellitus was found. However, higher milk consumption was associated with a lower risk of diabetes mellitus.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate lactose consumption and explore the interaction between lactose consumption, LP genotype, and gut microbiome in healthy adults in the US. The results showed that individuals with the LNP genotype consumed more lactose and had increased abundance of Lactobacillaceae and Lachnospiraceae taxa.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of lactose intolerance and its correlation with genetic analysis and H-BT in IBD patients. The results showed no significant difference in lactose intolerance prevalence between IBD patients and controls, and a significant association between wild-type genotype and lactose intolerance.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between lactase deficiency (LD) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). It was found that SIBO producing hydrogen (H2) is common in patients with severe LD suspected lactose intolerance. SIBO may be a new therapeutic target for managing intestinal symptoms in patients with lactose intolerance.

Summary: This study evaluated the relevance of methane/CO2 measurements for the diagnosis of paediatric carbohydrate malabsorption. The findings suggest that methane measurement did not significantly affect the detection rate of malabsorbers in children/adolescents with functional abdominal complaints when established cut-offs are used. The use of CO2 correction altered the diagnosis in a minority of patients but did not significantly change overall test results.

Summary: In this project, the non-invasive breath test was used to quantify mitochondrial fat oxidation in the human liver and examine changes in test results with altered liver disease state over time. The results showed a correlation between octanoate oxidation and fasting plasma glucose and endogenous glucose production. After lifestyle treatment or standardized care, there was an increase in octanoate oxidation and a reduction in steatosis, which suggested that the breath test could be used as an indicator of hepatic steatosis and glucose metabolism.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of delayed analysis of breath samples on hydrogen and methane concentrations. The results showed that expired hydrogen levels remain stable in plastic syringes if preserved for several days, but the delayed analysis of methane appeared to be less reliable.

Summary: This study aims to compare the diagnostic value of breath tests and jejunal aspiration cultures in the identification of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The results indicate that breath tests have good agreement with jejunal aspiration cultures, with glucose breath test (GBT) being more specific and lactulose breath test (LBT) having lower sensitivity. The breath test should be initially conducted in individuals suspected with SIBO due to its good agreement with jejunal aspirate culture.

Summary: Two-sided extreme conditional sampling combined with copula theory is used to assess the dependence between flood-risk drivers and storm surge. The setup of the statistical model greatly affects the estimation of compound events. A pragmatic approach that considers marginal fit in a POT framework is proposed and provides stable estimates of the compounding potential for high discharge and storm surge events. Using precipitation as a proxy for discharge is also explored when discharge records are not available.
