Summary: Human noroviruses (HuNoV) are a major cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, and frozen raspberries have been linked to multiple outbreaks. However, extracting HuNoV RNA from frozen raspberries remains challenging, with low recovery yields and inhibition of RT-qPCR limiting detection sensitivity. A new approach using magnetic silica beads showed relatively low recovery yields, highlighting the importance of reducing RT-qPCR inhibition to accurately assess HuNoV prevalence in frozen raspberries.

Summary: This study compared the performance of two widely used whole-blood RNA collection systems, PAXgene and Tempus, in laboratory and suboptimal tropical field conditions. Tempus tubes maintained higher RNA quantity and integrity compared to PAXgene under suboptimal conditions and also showed better stability of mRNA transcripts for reference genes.

Summary: The false-negative result of nucleic acid testing is one of the important causes of COVID-19 transmission. This study developed a method using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to protect and extract SARS-CoV-2 RNA, improving the sensitivity of RT-qPCR detection by 8-32 fold. The protection of RNA by SWCNTs allows for increased RNA load in downstream assays.

Summary: This study evaluated a new RNA extraction method for obtaining high-quality and high-yield RNA from the bioluminescent fungus Neonothopanus gardneri. Compared to other methods, TRI18G+ and TRI26G+ methods yielded higher amounts of RNA, providing a reproducible, time-saving, and cost-effective solution.

Summary: The study investigated the expression levels of five microRNAs in the blood of participants with hypertension, revealing dysregulated expression of miR-126-3p, 182-5p, and 30a-5p in hypertension. This suggests potential for these microRNAs as targets for hypertension diagnosis and therapy.

Summary: The study investigated the detection of total and subgenomic RNA of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal swab samples and their relationship to symptom duration. Results showed that subgenomic RNA levels declined linearly with total RNA levels, with a constant relationship over the duration of symptoms. This suggests that subgenomic RNA may not provide additional information on infectivity beyond what can be determined by total RNA copies.

Summary: This study explores the physiological and gene expression characteristics of perennial ryegrass under cadmium (Cd) stress. High concentrations of Cd significantly inhibit the growth of ryegrass, while lower concentrations have minor effects. The activity levels of antioxidant enzymes increase in Cd-treated ryegrass leaves. The transcriptomic analysis identifies 1103 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and reveals significant changes in molecular regulatory pathways.

Summary: In this study, a warm alkaline solution containing Triton X-100 was used to completely remove residual SARS-CoV2 RNA from used RNA-binding silica columns. The regenerated columns showed viral RNA purification capability comparable to fresh silica columns, and can be reused for at least five cycles. This method may benefit SARS-CoV2 diagnostic laboratories by reducing the need for commercial RNA-purification columns.

Summary: Secondary metabolites are bioactive compounds that are challenging to produce in the laboratory. This study used RNA-seq to investigate the cellular pathways of Pedobacter lusitanus NL19 modulated by high concentrations of peptone from casein (PC). The results showed that high PC concentrations significantly repressed the biosynthesis of biotin and the production of certain nonribosomal peptides, highlighting the effect of PC on gene expression and metabolic pathways.

Summary: In this study, a novel self-assembly approach based on rolling circle amplification and graphene oxide was proposed for the ultrasensitive detection of miRNA21 and miRNA16 in human saliva, which are oral cancer biomarkers. The proposed method exhibited ultrasensitive detection, a wide range of detection, and high selectivity, suggesting its potential application for the diagnosis and screening of early-stage oral cancer.

Summary: This study compared two bead-based RNA extraction methods (an in-house and a commercial kit) for RNA extraction from nasopharyngeal swabs and RT-qPCR detection of SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that the in-house protocol is an affordable and reliable option for SARS-CoV-2 detection from nasopharyngeal swabs.

Summary: HLH is a syndrome of pathological immune activation caused by uncontrolled proliferation of lymphocytes and histiocytes, with excessive cytokine production. Parvovirus B19 is a common cause of HLH, which can also impact blood cell lineages. Early detection and active treatment are crucial for favorable prognosis in HLH cases associated with parvovirus B19 infection.
