Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through breast milk and breastfeeding: a living systematic review

Elizabeth Centeno-Tablante, Melisa Medina-Rivera, Julia L. Finkelstein, Pura Rayco-Solon, Maria Nieves Garcia-Casal, Lisa Rogers, Kate Ghezzi-Kopel, Pratiwi Ridwan, Juan Pablo Pena-Rosas, Saurabh Mehta

Summary: Limited information is available on potential mother-to-child transmission of COVID-19, particularly through breast milk. Current evidence does not support the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through breast milk. Further studies with longer follow-up periods are needed to gather data on infant feeding practices and viral presence in breast milk.

Update on the Transmission of Zika Virus Through Breast Milk and Breastfeeding: A Systematic Review of the Evidence

Elizabeth Centeno-Tablante, Melisa Medina-Rivera, Julia L. Finkelstein, Heather S. Herman, Pura Rayco-Solon, Maria Nieves Garcia-Casal, Lisa Rogers, Kate Ghezzi-Kopel, Mildred P. Zambrano Leal, Joyce K. Andrade Velasquez, Juan G. Chang Asinc, Juan Pablo Pena-Rosas, Saurabh Mehta

Summary: The study found limited evidence of ZIKV mother-to-child transmission through breastfeeding or breast milk intake, with only a few positive breast milk samples. Current evidence is insufficient, and further research is needed to confirm if ZIKV can be transmitted through breastfeeding.

Benefits and Risks of Iron Interventions in Infants in Rural Bangladesh

S-R Pasricha, M. Hasan, S. Braat, L. M. Larson, S. M. M-U Tipu, S. J. Hossain, S. Shiraji, A. Baldi, M. S. A. Bhuiyan, F. Tofail, J. Fisher, S. Grantham-McGregor, J. A. Simpson, J. D. Hamadani, B-A Biggs

Summary: A trial in infants in rural Bangladesh showed that 3 months of daily supplementation with iron syrup or multiple micronutrient powders did not have an effect on child development or functional outcomes compared to placebo.

Preanalytic and analytic factors affecting the measurement of haemoglobin concentration: impact on global estimates of anaemia prevalence

Leila M. Larson, Sabine Braat, Mohammed Imrul Hasan, Martin N. Mwangi, Fernando Estepa, Sheikh Jamal Hossain, Danielle Clucas, Beverley-Ann Biggs, Kamija S. Phiri, Jena Derakhshani Hamadani, Sant-Rayn Pasricha

Summary: The study found discrepancies between capillary and venous haemoglobin concentrations, potentially impacting the accuracy of anaemia estimates; analytic variation had minimal impact on anaemia diagnosis.

Vaccine-induced immune thrombosis and thrombocytopenia syndrome following adenovirus-vectored severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 vaccination: a novel hypothesis regarding mechanisms and implications for future vaccine development

Paul Monagle, Ashley P. Ng, Matthew Linden, Vera Ignjatovic, Alison Farley, Samir Taoudi, Sant Rayn Pasricha, Joseph Torresi

Summary: The hypothesis suggests that thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome observed after administration of adenovirus-vectored vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 may be due to the antigen being delivered to cells of the immune system, leading to platelet decrease and blood clot formation. This hypothesis is testable through cell culture, animal models, and potentially in vivo, with significant implications for vaccine development and the understanding of the relationship between the coagulation and immune systems.

Krebs, Janet C. King, Robert E. Black, Md Munirul Islam, Christine M. McDonald, Sant-Rayn Pasricha

Summary: The study investigated the impact of zinc supplementation on peripheral blood gene expression and cytokine levels in young children in Dhaka, Bangladesh, finding that zinc interventions did not affect gene expression or cytokine concentrations, as well as no association between undernutrition and peripheral blood gene expression.

Protocol for a multicentre, parallel-group, open-label randomised controlled trial comparing ferric carboxymaltose with the standard of care in anaemic Malawian pregnant women: the REVAMP trial

Martin N. Mwangi, Glory Mzembe, Ernest Moya, Sabine Braat, Rebecca Harding, Bjarne Robberstad, Julie Simpson, William Stones, Stephen Rogerson, Kabeya Biselele, Jobiba Chinkhumba, Leila Larson, Ricardo Ataide, Kamija S. Phiri, Sant-Rayn Pasricha

Summary: The study aims to compare the effectiveness and safety of giving FCM once during the second trimester of pregnancy with standard oral iron therapy for treating maternal anaemia. A randomized controlled trial in Malawi will recruit 862 pregnant women with low haemoglobin levels and share the results with the local community and international forums. The primary outcome is the prevalence of anaemia at 36 weeks' gestation with secondary outcomes including birth weight and safety measures.

Rivaroxaban in the treatment of TEK-related venous malformation

Hnin P. Oo, Sant-Rayn Pasricha, Bryony Thompson, Ingrid Winship, Laura Scardamaglia

Summary: This case report presents a successful treatment of a venous malformation due to a variant in the TEK gene using low dose rivaroxaban, effectively controlling symptoms of chronic localized intravascular coagulation.

Cost-effectiveness of universal iron supplementation and iron-containing micronutrient powders for anemia among young children in rural Bangladesh: analysis of a randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Edifofon Akpan, Sheikh J. Hossain, Angela Devine, Sabine Braat, Mohammed Hasan, S. M. Mulk Uddin Tipu, Mohammad Saiful Alam Bhuiyan, Jena D. Hamadani, Beverley-Ann Biggs, Sant-Rayn Pasricha, Natalie Carvalho

Summary: This study assessed the cost-effectiveness of iron supplements and iron-containing multiple micronutrient powders (MNPs) among young children in rural Bangladesh. The results showed that iron supplementation was more cost-effective and averted more disability-adjusted life-years compared to MNPs. These findings do not support the universal use of iron supplementation or micronutrient powders as a cost-effective intervention for young children in rural Bangladesh.

Diagnosing anemia: Challenges selecting methods, addressing underlying causes, and implementing actions at the public health level

Maria Nieves Garcia-Casal, Omar Dary, Maria Elena Jefferds, Sant-Rayn Pasricha

Summary: Accurate and affordable tools for diagnosing anemia and understanding its causes are crucial. This review focuses on hemoglobin measurement methods, equipment, and quality control, as well as other causes of anemia. It emphasizes the importance of correct diagnosis to avoid the costs of misdiagnosis. At both individual and public health levels, actions must be taken to diagnose and control anemia effectively.

Serum or plasma ferritin concentration as an index of iron deficiency and overload

Maria Nieves Garcia-Casal, Sant-Rayn Pasricha, Ricardo X. Martinez, Lucero Lopez-Perez, Juan Pablo Pena-Rosas

Summary: Ferritin concentration can serve as an indicator for detecting iron deficiency and iron overload, but its levels can be affected by factors like inflammation and infection. There is currently uncertainty regarding the threshold and diagnostic accuracy of ferritin concentration in different populations for iron deficiency and iron overload.
