Associated Effect of SLC40A1 and TMPRSS6 Polymorphisms on Iron Overload

Summary: This study investigated the role of FPN and TMPRSS6 gene polymorphisms in iron homeostasis. The findings indicated that individuals with FPN SNPs had higher ferritin concentration, transferrin saturation %, and hemoglobin concentration compared to those with TMPRSS6 SNPs or wild-type individuals. Furthermore, the presence of both SLC40A1 and TMPRSS6 SNPs led to even higher ferritin concentration and TS% than TMPRSS6 SNP group alone.

Limited knowledge exists on iron metabolism in lung graft recipients and donors, complicated further by the potential impact of drugs. This overview highlights the importance of understanding iron turnover in transplant patients and assessing drug effects on iron metabolism for perioperative treatment in transplantology.

Iron Deficiency and Anemia in Male and Female Adolescent Athletes Who Engage in Ball Games

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia among male adolescent athletes participating in non-calorie-restricting sports, and compare it with female athletes of the same age and sports. Data from basketball and football players aged 11-18 were analyzed, and it was found that non-anemic iron deficiency is highly prevalent among adolescent males playing ball games. Mild and moderate iron deficiency were significantly higher among females. Screening for hemoglobin and serum ferritin is recommended for young athletes of both genders and in all sports.

Iron Status and Associated Factors among Canadian Women: Results from the Canadian Health Measures Survey

Summary: This study investigated the associations between various sociodemographic, lifestyle, medication, and dietary factors and body iron stores among Canadian women. The findings showed that age, East/Southeast Asian race/ethnicity, alcohol, and red meat consumption were positively associated with iron stores among pre- and postmenopausal women. On the other hand, aspirin use and dairy consumption were inversely associated with iron stores among postmenopausal women.

These findings do not support the universal use of iron supplementation or micronutrient powders as a cost-effective intervention for young children in rural Bangladesh.
