Summary: This study explored the association between wheezing phenotypes and 17q12-21 genetic variants in children, revealing four latent classes of wheezing and highlighting the genetic locus as relevant to wheezing. Differences in genetic associations between European American and African American children were also observed, suggesting potential racial/ancestral influences on wheezing phenotypes.

Summary: This study proposes a more comprehensive method to describe the development of wheezing and identifies five different phenotypes of wheezing. The spell-based approach proves to be more robust and able to capture the characteristics of wheezing development better than binary information.

Summary: This study found that high plasma adiponectin is observationally associated with an increased risk of asthma, but genetic evidence could not support a causal association between plasma adiponectin and asthma.

Summary: Using tIgE and virus data, we identified phenotypes of infant bronchiolitis and studied their association with asthma development and biological characteristics. We found 4 phenotypes, and infants with the tIgE(high)virus(RSV-low/RV) phenotype had a significantly higher risk for developing asthma. These phenotypes also exhibited different biological characteristics, such as depleted type I interferon and enriched antigen presentation pathways.

Summary: In genome-wide association studies of obesity and BMI, a locus (rs9292139) in LOC102724122 was found to be associated with BMI under a recessive model, highlighting the benefits of the recessive model in whole-genome sequencing analyses. This discovery emphasizes the importance of considering different genetic inheritance models in genetic studies of complex traits like obesity.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the developmental trajectories of childhood wheezing in South Africa and the UK. Four wheeze phenotypes were identified in the South African cohort: never, early transient, late onset, and recurrent. All-cause lower respiratory tract infection and respiratory syncytial virus infection were associated with recurrent wheeze.

Summary: This meta-analysis found a significant association between circulating zinc and the risk of childhood asthma and wheezing. Subgroup analysis showed that children with asthma or wheezing in the Middle Eastern countries had significantly lower circulating zinc levels than controls. The results suggest an important relationship between circulating zinc and childhood asthma and its related symptom wheezing.

Summary: The human microbiome associated with the respiratory tract is diverse, heterogeneous, and dynamic. The interactions between microorganisms, host cells, and the host immune system play a complex role in respiratory diseases. Viral infections can alter the presence of bacterial species, increasing the risk for allergies and asthma.

Summary: In a study of 466,556 children born in Denmark, three childhood onset asthma phenotypes were identified, and early life ACEs were found to be associated with increased odds for each of these phenotypes among both girls and boys.

Summary: Asthma, the most common respiratory disease, has multiple phenotypes that can be differentiated by measuring specific biomarkers. Choosing suitable biomarkers to stratify patients remains a challenge, but the use of multiple biomarkers is superior for better disease evaluation.

Summary: A study was conducted to screen circulating proteins in childhood asthma and investigate their association with the disease in a mouse model. It was found that creatine kinase (CK) was consistently associated with asthma, and this association was further supported by gene expression analysis and a mouse model experiment.

Summary: This cohort study aimed to evaluate doctor-diagnosed and self-reported asthma in young adults after early-childhood hospitalisation for wheezing. Results showed that early-childhood hospitalisation for wheezing was an independently significant risk factor of asthma in young adults, with an increased risk of self-reported asthma that remained statistically significant in analyses adjusted for confounding factors. Previous asthma during early childhood was also identified as a strong risk factor for asthma in young adulthood.

Summary: This report evaluated the association between in utero exposure to paracetamol and the risk of developing respiratory disorders such as asthma and wheeze after birth. The study included 330,550 women, and the results showed a significant increased risk of asthma and wheezing in children whose mothers were exposed to paracetamol during pregnancy. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using paracetamol during pregnancy, with the lowest effective dose and shortest duration of use.

Summary: This study aimed to predict exacerbation-prone asthma (EPA) in children. The findings suggest that in addition to asthma control level, baseline lung function and white blood cell count are important factors for predicting EPA.
