Plant-Derived Antimicrobial Peptides as Potential Antiviral Agents in Systemic Viral Infections

Nour Mammari, Ysaline Krier, Quentin Albert, Marc Devocelle, Mihayl Varbanov

Summary: Plant peptides with antiviral properties show potential in inhibiting the growth of viruses causing human diseases, highlighting the role of plants in antimicrobial therapy. Studies demonstrate that plant cyclotides, defensin-like peptides exhibit anti-viral activity, and lipid transfer proteins and lectins display varied antimicrobial profiles.

Functional Antagonism of Junctional Adhesion Molecule-A (JAM-A), Overexpressed in Breast Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), Reduces HER2-Positive Tumor Progression

Hill, Kieran Brennan, Saraswati Sukumar, Ann M. Hopkins

Summary: Specific drug targets for breast ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) are difficult to determine, but this study suggests that JAM-A, a cell surface protein, could be a potential therapeutic target in DCIS patients. The study found that JAM-A is upregulated in DCIS patient tissues and a novel JAM-A-binding peptide inhibitor showed efficacy in inhibiting tumor growth in in vivo models. This finding provides valuable insights for the development of novel treatments for DCIS patients.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are widely studied as therapeutic agents, but their clinical use is limited due to low in vivo bioavailability and systemic toxicity. In this study, a drug delivery system (DDS) was prepared by physically conjugating an arginine-rich peptide and hydrothermal carbon nanoparticles (CNPs). The DDS showed antimicrobial activity against Eschericia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, although it was less effective than the free peptide.

Natural Products for the Prevention and Treatment of Common Cold and Viral Respiratory Infections

Nour Mammari, Quentin Albert, Marc Devocelle, Masa Kenda, Nina Kocevar Glavac, Marija Sollner Dolenc, Laura Mercolini, Jaroslav Toth, Nagy Milan, Szilvia Czigle, Mihayl Varbanov

Summary: The common cold is a usually harmless infectious disease of the upper respiratory pathway, with mostly mild symptoms. However, it can lead to serious complications and even death in vulnerable patients. Treatment for the common cold is symptomatic, with the use of analgesics, antihistamines, decongestants, and local treatments. Medicinal plant specialties have shown efficacy in treating the common cold, as discussed in this review.

Pre-Professional International Mobility of European Pharmacy Students-A French Example

Mihayl Varbanov, Daniele Bensoussan, Marc Devocelle

Summary: Internationalisation and the need for interaction with international partners are vital for a pharmacist's career. This study aims to provide a preliminary investigation into the current status of pre-professional mobility of pharmacy students. It is the first case study of international pre-professional mobility of pharmacy students in France, with a focus on the north-eastern region. The study is based on a recent survey conducted in 2020 at the University of Lorraine's Faculty of Pharmacy, highlighting the impact of international mobility programs, such as the Erasmus+ program, on the pharmacy curriculum. The results suggest that, despite barriers, international pre-professional mobility has generally positive outcomes.
