Summary: This study examined the validity and gender invariance of the CESD-20-R among 502 Nigerian university students. The results showed good internal consistency reliability of the scale with gender differences, particularly in the self-destructive component related to suicidal ideation. The study suggests that while the CESD-20-R can be successfully used for gender comparisons, caution is needed in interpreting specific items.

Summary: This study investigated the individual and interactive effects of systemic inflammation and life stressors on treatment responses in patients with depressive disorders. The results showed that higher baseline serum hsCRP levels and number of stressful life events had significant interactive effects on short- and long-term non-remission in patients receiving pharmacotherapy, suggesting a potential predictor for treatment responses.

Summary: COPD is a leading cause of death worldwide, characterized by emphysema and chronic bronchitis, with smoking as a significant risk factor in developed countries. Chronic inflammation contributes to disease progression and comorbidities. Tocotrienols show potential as anti-inflammatory agents in COPD management.

Summary: Patients with COPD exhibit increased oxidative stress in their lungs, which can be caused by external factors such as smoking and air pollution, as well as internal factors such as inflammation. Oxidative stress plays a major role in driving the pathology of COPD, leading to chronic inflammation, cellular senescence, impaired autophagy, and reduced repair mechanisms. Antioxidants may be effective in modifying the disease progression of COPD.

Summary: This study compared the metabolism of the kynurenine pathway (KP) in healthy individuals and individuals with obesity, depression, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The results showed that the KP was upregulated in the disease groups, and there were significant differences in the metabolites produced. In the obesity group, body mass index (BMI), smoking, diabetes, and C-reactive protein were important predictors of the differences. However, these factors were not related to the differences in the depression and COPD groups.

Summary: This study found that DEC1 expression was increased in rat models of OSA-associated PAH. In vitro experiments showed that DEC1 overexpression exacerbated oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, and promoted cell proliferation in PASMCs. These results suggest that hypoxia-induced DEC1 inhibits PPARγ, which is an important mechanism in the development of PAH.

Summary: The article discusses the clinical data of main studies evaluating smoking cessation therapies for COPD patients, starting from seminal studies like the Lung Health Study to more recent ones. Despite the high impact on disease progression and demonstrated benefits of pharmacological therapies, smoking cessation remains challenging in COPD. Potential approaches to increase success rates include prolonging treatment duration, combination therapy, or sequential pharmacotherapy.

Summary: This study aimed to define smoking combined with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as a phenotype (SOSA) and demonstrate the detrimental effects of continued smoking on OSA. The findings indicated that smokers had an earlier onset of OSA and more severe daytime sleepiness. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was more prevalent among smokers, and smoking significantly influenced the severity of OSA.

Summary: Our paper aims to review the central attitudes associated with the hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccination specific to Eastern European countries. The main determinants identified are public confidence in the vaccines' safety and efficacy, vaccine literacy, and public trust in the government and the medical system. Specific factors predicting the willingness to vaccinate in Eastern Europe have also been highlighted. Incorporating these attitudes into local public health programs can help reduce the spread and impact of COVID-19 in Eastern Europe and beyond.

Summary: This review discusses the role of cell senescence in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its impact on treatment outcomes. While cell senescence has anti-tumor effects, upregulation of senescence can promote tumor metastasis and poor response to therapy. Little is known about potential approaches to mitigate the unfavorable consequences of senescence in NSCLC. Further investigation into the relationship between immune senescence and NSCLC, as well as the feasibility of immunotherapeutic approaches, is crucial for improving disease outcomes.
