Expert Rev. Respir. Med. 5(3), 333-335 (2011) Evaluation of: Hanania NA, Mullerova H, Locantore NW et al. Determinants of depression in the ECLIPSE chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cohort. Am. J. Respir. Crit Care Med. 183(5), 604-611 (2011). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease related to smoking and to other inhaled noxious agents, which initially is confined to the respiratory apparatus and subsequently becomes systemic, due to development of comorbid conditions such as systemic inflammation and depression. The latter is more frequently detected in patients with COPD than in the general population and is targeted therapeutically with various interventions which are part of pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Hanania et al. analyzed the determinants of depression in a cohort of COPD patients and found that the strongest predictor was health-related quality of life. A similar analysis performed on the CORD disease subset with highest incidence of depression would probably offer more relevant information on this topic.

Pharmacological strategies for smoking cessation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a pragmatic review

Sabina Antonela Antoniu, Ioana Buculei, Florin Mihaltan, Radu Crisan Dabija, Antigona Carmen Trofor

Summary: The article discusses the clinical data of main studies evaluating smoking cessation therapies for COPD patients, starting from seminal studies like the Lung Health Study to more recent ones. Despite the high impact on disease progression and demonstrated benefits of pharmacological therapies, smoking cessation remains challenging in COPD. Potential approaches to increase success rates include prolonging treatment duration, combination therapy, or sequential pharmacotherapy.

Treatment of fibrous dysplasia: focus on denosumab

Bogdan Huzum, Sabina Antoniu, Raluca Dragomir

Summary: The study reviewed the scientific rationale for using denosumab in treating FD, as well as the efficacy and safety of this therapy for the condition, along with other treatment options. Denosumab shows potential as a therapeutic agent against FD, and a synergistic approach involving theranostics may enhance its therapeutic potential.

Inhaled interferons beta and SARS-COV2 infection: a preliminary therapeutic perspective

Elena Cojocaru, Cristian Cojocaru, Sabina Antonela Antoniu, Celina Silvia Stafie, Armand Rajnoveanu, Ruxandra-Mioara Rajnoveanu

Summary: Nebulized interferon-beta is being investigated as a potential therapy for SARS-COV2, as it has shown to accelerate disease recovery in phase II studies. Further clinical research is needed to determine its efficacy in severe cases of COVID-19, optimal treatment duration, and its suitability for home use, as well as potential combined regimens with antivirals or compounds to enhance interferon production.

Smoking Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Arguments for a Distinctive Phenotype and a Personalized Intervention

Marina Ruxandra Otelea, Mihaela Trenchea, Agripina Rascu, Sabina Antoniu, Corina Zugravu, Stefan Busnatu, Anca Angela Simionescu, Oana Cristina Arghir

Summary: This study aimed to define smoking combined with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as a phenotype (SOSA) and demonstrate the detrimental effects of continued smoking on OSA. The findings indicated that smokers had an earlier onset of OSA and more severe daytime sleepiness. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was more prevalent among smokers, and smoking significantly influenced the severity of OSA.

Summary: This article presents a guideline developed by the Romanian Societies of Gastroenterology and Neurogastroenterology, in association with the Romanian Society of Pneumology, regarding respiratory conditions associated with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The experts used the Delphi methodology to review the literature and formulated 22 recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of GERD-induced respiratory symptoms. The guideline emphasizes the potential link between GERD and bronchial asthma and chronic cough, and recommends proton pump inhibitors and laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication as therapeutic options.

Determinants of the Hesitancy toward COVID-19 Vaccination in Eastern European Countries and the Relationship with Health and Vaccine Literacy: A Literature Review

Alina Delia Popa, Armand Iustinian Enache, Iolanda Valentina Popa, Sabina Antonela Antoniu, Raluca Alina Dragomir, Alexandru Burlacu

Summary: Our paper aims to review the central attitudes associated with the hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccination specific to Eastern European countries. The main determinants identified are public confidence in the vaccines' safety and efficacy, vaccine literacy, and public trust in the government and the medical system. Specific factors predicting the willingness to vaccinate in Eastern Europe have also been highlighted. Incorporating these attitudes into local public health programs can help reduce the spread and impact of COVID-19 in Eastern Europe and beyond.

Immune senescence in non-small cell lung cancer management: therapeutic relevance, biomarkers, and mitigating approaches

Teodora Alexa-Stratulat, Mariana Pavel-Tanasa, Vlad-Andrei Cianga, Sabina Antoniu

Summary: This review discusses the role of cell senescence in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its impact on treatment outcomes. While cell senescence has anti-tumor effects, upregulation of senescence can promote tumor metastasis and poor response to therapy. Little is known about potential approaches to mitigate the unfavorable consequences of senescence in NSCLC. Further investigation into the relationship between immune senescence and NSCLC, as well as the feasibility of immunotherapeutic approaches, is crucial for improving disease outcomes.

Development and Validation of a Questionnaire to Assess Knowledge and Attitudes toward COVID-19 Preventive Measures in Romania

Alina Delia Popa, Sabina Antonela Antoniu, Armand Iustinian Enache, Iolanda Valentina Popa, Raluca Alina Dragomir, Alexandru Burlacu

Summary: The article proposes the first validated Romanian questionnaire to assess people's level of education and attitudes towards general measures to protect against COVID-19 infection. Through factor analysis and internal fidelity assessment, three factors were identified and a predictive model for vaccination was developed. The implementation of the questionnaire can help identify areas in need of intervention and prevent a sixth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania.
