Summary: This study focused on the community structure of desmids, one of the most frequent groups of peatland phytobenthos in the Bohemian Massif. It found that several ecologically sensitive taxa were recorded in the fragments of ombrogenous bogs, which currently cover less than 3% of the area. The highest species richness was recorded in several slightly acidic ponds and sinkholes, which were often located outside the existing protected areas.

Summary: In this study, a taxonomic review was conducted to update our knowledge of the genus Tetmemorus in Brazil, by compiling data from literature and analyzing samples collected in Bahia State. Information on description, distribution, ecological aspects, materials examined, and taxonomic comments were provided for each identified taxon. A taxonomic key for all reported species in Brazil was also provided. A total of eight Tetmemorus taxa were identified, including five species and three non-typical varieties, in Brazilian territory.

Summary: The ontogeny of multicellular organisms and the morphogenesis of unicellular structures differ in their integration patterns and control over the final shape. This study examined microalgae using geometric morphometric analysis, and found that the integration patterns were different from self-similarity and the variability increased with decreasing scale. The developmental control over the final shape progressively declines with decreasing spatial scale.

Summary: The taxonomy and nomenclature of Micrasterias arcuata are problematic due to morphological variation and poorly circumscribed infraspecific taxa. This study evaluated the phylogenetic position of strains traditionally assigned to M. arcuata using molecular, phylogenetic, and morphometric approaches. The genetic and morphological analyses revealed that these strains represent different taxonomic entities, supporting the proposal of a new genus and recognizing two new species.

Summary: Micrasterias foliacea is an interesting desmid species with a filamentous life form that sets it apart from other species. This paper provides a review of its global distribution and reports its presence in two new locations in southern Africa. The paper also discusses taxonomical levels based on morphological characteristics.

Summary: Terrestrial microalgae have evolved various photoprotective strategies to survive on land, including the production of sunscreen compounds. A new genus of conjugating green algae, Serritaenia gen. nov., has been discovered to produce extracellular mucilage with striking pigmentation, indicating a unique photoprotective adaptation in eukaryotic algae. Experimental exposure to UVB can induce the production of pigmented mucilage in Serritaenia spp., which strongly absorbs deleterious wavebands.

Summary: Although desmids are widely distributed, their diversity in subaerial environments remains little known. This study conducted a taxonomic survey of subaerial desmids in the Atlantic Forest biome, revealing the presence of adaptive structures in some species.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of three Spirotaenia populations, including a new species and two pioneer records for the Neotropics, during a taxonomic survey of microalgae in Bahia State, Brazil. Detailed information on these species and other Spirotaenia populations in the Neotropical region is provided, improving our understanding of the diversity and geographic distribution of this genus.

Summary: This study investigated the composition and changes of Zygnema sp. assemblages in hydro-terrestrial ecosystems. The results showed that sites with stable water regimes had a more stable representation of genotypes. The study also highlighted the importance of resistant pre-akinetes in surviving winter conditions and the need to address the hidden diversity of the genus Zygnema.

Summary: Water scarcity is a significant stressor on land, and land plants have developed avoidance and tolerance mechanisms to cope with this challenge. The Zygnematophyceae, which are closely related to land plants, exhibit similar gene expression patterns and photobiological adjustments despite their ecological differences. This study identifies differences in drought resilience between Zygnema circumcarinatum and Mesotaenium endlicherianum, shedding light on their adaptive strategies.
