The RIKEN RI Beam Factory (RIBF) provides intense radioactive isotope (RI) beams with energies around 200 MeV/nucleon in a wide range of unstable nuclei. Part of the facility started routine operation in 1987 and, in 1990, RI beams from this part became available, with energies of a few tens of MeV/nucleon and the world's highest intensities at the time for many light exotic nuclei. To exploit the research opportunities available with such fast RI beams, various experimental devices have been constructed and several new methods have been developed. A number of modern aspects of nuclear structure, such as the neutron halo and the disappearance/appearance of magic numbers, have been investigated. Several attempts to approach astrophysical nuclear processes involving short-lived nuclei have been made. The present RIBF facility was completed in 2006. It far exceeds other existing facilities in the world in its RI beam production capability. A variety of research programs have been started, and several groundbreaking results have already been obtained.

Summary: A new experiment studying the symmetry energy measured the multiplicities of negatively and positively charged pions generated in heavy ion collisions, but found that the differences among transport codes prevent the extraction of reliable constraints on the symmetry energy from the data.

Summary: Theoretical models of beta-delayed neutron emission are crucial for r-process calculations, but lack of experimental data makes benchmarking predictions challenging. This study presents beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities for 33 nuclides, 16 for the first time, affecting final abundance distribution in the second r-process peak. Measurements were performed at RIKEN using advanced detectors, constraining theoretical model predictions in the region.

Summary: The rapidity distributions of hydrogen isotopes emitted from central collisions of neutron-rich and neutron-deficient systems at 270 MeV/nucleon were studied, and it was found that the distributions can be reproduced after adjusting the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections in AMD calculations. The double ratios of deuteron to proton and triton to proton in the midrapidity domain agree well with the system neutron numbers and its squared value, respectively, indicating partial mixing of colliding nuclei. The experimental results in the midrapidity domain support a calculation with a symmetry-energy slope parameter around L = 46 MeV rather than L = 108 MeV in AMD model.

Summary: Experimental observations on different isotopes Ca-55, Ca-57 have revealed important phenomena in their states, which are consistent with theoretical calculations. The existence of a short-lived state in Ca-57 suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at N = 35 to collective excitations at N = 37.

Summary: The beta-decay of the even-even nucleus Kr-70 with Z=N+2 was investigated, and fifteen gamma-rays associated with the beta-decay were identified for the first time. The half-life of Kr-70 and the beta-delayed proton emission probability were determined with increased precision. The study observed an increase in the beta-strength to the yrast 1(+) state, indicating potential increased np correlations in the T=0 channel.

Summary: This paper introduces a multiplicity trigger detector (MTD) developed for the S pi RIT experiment, aiming to investigate the high-density symmetry energy through heavy-ion collisions. The MTD is capable of measuring the charged-particle multiplicity and providing trigger signals for selecting high-multiplicity events induced by central collisions. The experimental results show that the MTD has a minimum multiplicity threshold of 4 and a trigger efficiency of approximately 39%.

Summary: We report on the first proton-induced single proton- and neutron-removal reactions from the neutron-deficient 14O nucleus with large Fermi-surface asymmetry Sn - Sp 1/4 18.6 MeV at similar to 100 MeV/nucleon, a widely used energy regime for rare-isotope studies. The measured inclusive cross sections and parallel momentum distributions of the 13N and 13O residues are compared to the state-of-the-art reaction models, with nuclear structure inputs from many-body shell-model calculations. Our results provide the first quantitative contributions of multiple reaction mechanisms including the quasifree knockout, inelastic scattering, and nucleon transfer processes. It is shown that the inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer are important tools for investigating single-particle strengths and correlations in atomic nuclei.

Summary: The performance of germanium detectors for high-energy gamma-rays was evaluated. A 992-keV resonance in the Al-27(p, gamma)Si-28 reaction was used for the measurement at the RIKEN tandem accelerator. The energy of the excited state from the resonance was determined as 12540.7(2) keV. An energy calibration function and photo peak efficiency for Ge detectors up to 10.8-MeV photons were deduced using the newly determined excitation energy. The overall energy region achieved an energy accuracy of 0.3 keV. This reaction provides reliable energy and efficiency standards for high-energy gamma-rays.

Summary: Experimental information on fragment emissions is important for understanding nuclear collision dynamics and developing transport models. The hypothesis of thermal equilibrium breaks down for particles emitted with high transfer momentum. The scaling features of particle yield ratios from two systems are examined to investigate the system's properties, and the breakdown of isoscaling for high transverse momentum particles cannot be explained by the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model.

Summary: Charge-changing cross sections sigma(CC) for Ca42-51 on a carbon target at around 280 MeV/nucleon have been measured. The measured sigma(CC) data show a significant decrease, contrary to the expectations, which is attributed to the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction. By taking the evaporation effect into account, the sigma(CC) data sets for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes on C-12 measured at around 280 MeV/nucleon can be successfully reproduced, with a standard deviation of 1.6%. Furthermore, it is found that the evaporation effect becomes negligible in the neutron-rich region, and the sigma(CC) data for neutron-rich Ca isotopes (A >= 51) are highly sensitive to the point-proton radius r(p), allowing for potential determination of r(p) for very neutron-rich nuclei.
