Summary: The study shows that culturing methods can recover a high number of bacterial genera from vertebrate gut microbiotas, including rare ones missed by culture-independent sequencing. Culturing not only improves inventories but also enables the discovery of novel species related to human pathogens.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the gut microbiotal diversity in Han Chinese and Yugur populations living in the same environmental conditions in Sunan County, Gansu Province, and analyze possible causes of differences. The results showed differential gut microbiota between the two populations, which may be influenced by dietary habits. This study provides a fundamental basis for further exploring the relationships among gut microbiota, dietary factors, and disease.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a heterogeneous disorder and gut dysbiosis can influence brain function. Modulating the gut microbiota has been suggested as a promising approach for managing Alzheimer's disease. However, there is a lack of research on stratification of the gut microbiota in Alzheimer's disease.

Summary: This study revealed a close relationship between gut microbiota and residual feed intake in pigs, with specific bacteria such as Ruminococcusflavefaolens enriched in high-FE pigs and Prevotella spp. enriched in high-RFI pigs. Functional analysis showed that the low-RFI pigs had a higher abundance of pathways related to amino acid metabolism, while the high-RFI pigs lacked these pathways.

Summary: This study investigated the gut microflora and gene expression levels in Culex pipiens pallens under low-temperature stress. It was found that low-temperature stress decreased the survival time of Cx. pipiens pallens and affected the diversity of gut microflora. Furthermore, a significant correlation between gut microflora and gene expression was observed.

Summary: This study compared the diversity, structure, and function of gut microbiota between cultivated and wild groups of the zig-zag eel. The results showed that wild zig-zag eels had higher alpha diversity and exhibited different functional pathways compared to cultivated populations. These findings suggest that the diet and habitat conditions play a role in the diversity and function of gut microbiota, and that mimicking the wild diet and habitat may improve the productivity and quality of farmed zig-zag eel.

Summary: This study characterized the gut microbiota and predicted functional metabolic effects in an Australian cohort of people with Parkinson's disease. Significant differences in microbial abundance and diversity were found between PD patients and controls. KEGG analysis identified altered metabolic pathways in PD patients, providing insights into possible mechanisms of gut microbiota influence on the disease.

Summary: Analysing the gut microbiomes of 14 sympatric small mammal species in an African savanna, it was found that the differences in gut microbiomes were correlated with the phylogenetic relatedness of the hosts, with stronger patterns observed at deeper levels of the phylogeny. Additionally, the gut microbiome diversity and composition were also correlated with the body size, dietary breadth, and dietary overlap of the hosts.

Summary: Extensive studies have been conducted on the human gut microbiome and its connection to specific diseases, with a focus on gallstone disease (GSD) in the past decade. The study aimed to investigate the fecal bacteriobiome composition and structure in GSD-afflicted females using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The findings revealed distinct bacterial taxa associated with blood biochemistry and differential abundance pre- and post-cholecystectomy (CCE) in a short timeframe.

Summary: This study reveals the significant effect of vitamin B1 on the survival and competition of gut bacteria, providing a solution for individual differences in the gut microbial community. Additionally, vitamin B1 is involved in the production of butyrate. Through animal experiments and pathway analysis, possible associations and mechanistic insights are obtained.

Summary: Using high-throughput sequencing technology, the microbial community structure in the gut and sediments of three tropical sea cucumber species, Holothuria atra, Stichopus chloronotus, and S. monotuberculatus, was analyzed. The richness and diversity of microflora in the gut of all three sea cucumber species were significantly lower than that in sediments. The gut microbial communities of H. atra and S. chloronotus were more similar than that of S. monotuberculatus. Proteobacteria was the predominant phylum in all samples, while Actinobacteria was significantly more abundant in S. chloronotus. Potential probiotics and sequences related to Lactobacillus and Pseudomonas were also found.

Summary: This analysis explored the spatial patterns and contextual social determinants of health (SDOH) associated with COVID-19 incidence in a Hispanic population in Cameron County, Texas. Findings revealed that higher percentages of single-parent households and limited English proficiency were associated with higher relative incidence risks of COVID-19, while lower income and a younger population were associated with lower risks. The presence of a shelter-in-place policy significantly reduced the incidence risk of COVID-19.

Summary: By implementing a comprehensive intervention program, including community education, patient navigation, and training for local providers, a large number of women in the Rio Grande Valley were able to receive diagnosis and treatment for cervical dysplasia. If sustained, these efforts are expected to decrease cervical cancer rates in the region.

Summary: Minority populations have been underrepresented in clinical research trials, leading to increasing burdens of cancer and chronic disease. Challenges to recruiting minorities in the United States include issues of trust. Successful recruitment strategies involve addressing community concerns and training staff from the same community. In one case study, a team was recruited and trained from a local community in Texas, enrolling over five thousand Mexican Americans in a cohort study on chronic diseases and acquiring advanced skills and health information.
