Summary: This study aims to explore the potential influence of golden tomato (GT) on Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), particularly focusing on redox homeostasis. The results showed that GT oral supplementation can counterbalance MetS-induced changes in biometrics and metabolism, reduce plasma oxidant status, and improve endogenous antioxidant capacity. Additionally, GT treatment also significantly reduced hepatic lipid peroxidation and hepatic steatosis induced by a high-fat diet. This research elucidates the importance of food supplementation with GT in the prevention and management of MetS.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different parameters in the green process of extracting C-phycocyanin from organic Spirulina biomass on weight and oral glucose tolerance in Swiss mice fed with a high-fat diet. The results showed that supplementation of Spirulina biomass in the HFDS group did not exhibit antiobesogenic potential with an HFD, but further studies are needed to explore other interesting responses regarding C-PC biological effects in vivo.

Summary: This study demonstrates that models for the antioxidant activity of tripeptides from frog skin can be built without the need for complex calculations involving 3D architecture and quantum mechanics descriptors. The structure of tripeptides represented by sequences of symbol abbreviations of amino acids can be used for building quantitative structure-activity relationships. The best model for the validation set shows good statistical quality with n = 27, r(2) = 0.93, RMSE = 0.15.

Summary: In this study, phosphorylated surface deacetylated chitin nanofibers (PS-ChNFs) were successfully prepared using the phosphorylation method. Response surface methodology was employed for optimization, and a maximum degree of substitution of 0.13 was obtained. Characterization results using FT-IR, NMR, XPS, SEM, and EDS-mapping confirmed the presence of phosphate groups in PS-ChNFs, and showed that PS-ChNFs had a rough surface with many cavities. Antioxidant and antibacterial tests demonstrated that PS-ChNFs exhibited significant free radical scavenging and antibacterial effects.

Summary: A comprehensive study on bioactive compounds in the leaves of main Berberis species growing in Chile was conducted. 117 compounds including phenolic acids, alkaloids, flavonols, and other compounds were identified. Hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and quercetin derivatives were found to be the main compounds. Fatty acid profile and antioxidant capacity also varied among different species. These findings provide insights for novel approaches in utilizing these leaves as natural food or ingredient.

Summary: This study explores the correlation between total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant capacity in 167 varieties of Tartary buckwheat. Through metabolomics analysis, 58 flavonoid compounds were identified and 8 differential metabolites highly correlated with TFC and antioxidant capacity were selected. The findings provide a basis for selecting and identifying Tartary buckwheat varieties with high flavonoid content and strong antioxidant activity.

Summary: This study found that the transfer of PFASs through the placenta varies by compounds, with PFOA and PFHxS showing higher transfer rates compared to PFOS. Additionally, gestational age and birth weight were positively related to the placental transfer rate of PFASs, while pre-pregnancy BMI and weight were inversely related, highlighting the importance of pregnancy-related factors in the placental transfer of PFASs. Further research on novel PFASs in Korean pregnant women is recommended.
