Summary: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) in patients with delayed transfer to the operating room. The results showed that patients in the delayed group who underwent REBOA had significantly higher survival rates.

Summary: The study compared the novel use of the GORE Tri-Lobe Balloon Catheter with existing REBOA and pREBOA techniques in a porcine hemorrhagic shock model. Results suggest that the GORE catheter may be a potentially viable alternative device for controlling hemorrhage and preventing reperfusion injury.

Summary: This study describes a novel method of whole blood extraction using REBOA, which effectively supports hemodynamics and investigates its impact on the quality of banked blood. The results show that this method provides sufficient blood volume and quality for transfusion during the collection of 40% ETBV.

Summary: This study compared the hemostatic values of internal iliac artery balloon occlusion (IIABO) and abdominal aorta balloon occlusion (AABO) in patients with pernicious placenta previa. The results showed that although AABO had a longer operative duration and hospitalization days, it significantly reduced blood loss and hemorrhage velocity compared to IIABO. Angiographies revealed different bleeding mechanisms between the two methods. This study suggests that AABO has a better prospect for controlling bleeding and may be more effective with isolated blood pressure in uterine venules.

Summary: This study describes the successful implementation of REBOA use in an academic urban Level I trauma center. By providing institutional protocols, setting up REBOA supply carts, and conducting professional practice evaluations, surgeons were able to successfully perform REBOA procedures and eventually participate in a multicenter trial.

Summary: Hemorrhage is a leading cause of death in trauma settings, with non-compressible torso hemorrhage being a significant factor in organ dysfunction and poor outcomes in multiple trauma patients. Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) has evolved as a modern method of temporary stabilization for bleeding control, but its application is limited due to lack of experience and troubleshooting guidelines. This study aimed to provide practical tips for implementing a step-by-step procedure for REBOA in various hospital settings, outlining the identification of the common femoral artery, arterial access, precautions during sheath insertion, and other key steps in the procedure.

Summary: Pressure-guided balloon inflation, rather than volume-guided, may reduce the risk of aortic rupture. Optimal balloon inflation parameters depend on anatomical, physiological, and demographic characteristics. These findings can help enhance the safety of REBOA procedures and devices.

Summary: Resuscitation of acutely hemorrhaging small animal patients, such as dogs and cats, should prioritize hemorrhage control and judicious crystalloid administration followed by early consideration for blood component therapy to minimize blood loss, ameliorate coagulopathy, restore oxygen delivery, and correct changes in the glycocalyx.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated a new method based on surface landmarks to guide the accurate placement of REBOA in zone III of aorta. The midpoint between the xiphoid process and the umbilicus was found to be an effective surface landmark for rapid positioning REBOA without the use of fluoroscopy. The predicted accuracy of catheter positioning guided by this surface landmark was high on both sides of the aorta.

Summary: In a nonhuman primate animal model, prolonged REBOA treatment for 60 minutes compared to 30 minutes resulted in lower mortality rates following hemorrhagic shock, but was also associated with complications such as hypertension, increased base deficit, elevated Troponin I, and kidney injury. Paralysis and spinal cord ischemia were observed in animals treated with 60-minute REBOA, while limiting balloon inflation to 30 minutes mitigated these effects.

Summary: Traumatic chylothorax is a rare condition usually caused by direct damage leading to chyle leak, but airway obstruction due to thoracic duct injury after blunt trauma is extremely rare. This report presents a very unusual case of airway obstruction following a whiplash injury, which was treated with surgical drainage and thoracic duct ligation.
