Summary: Substantial evidence suggests that the environmental chemical bisphenol A (BPA), used in the production of plastics and resins, can impair brain development. Studies on humans have found correlations between early BPA exposure and developmental disorders like attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder. Animal models have shown that developmental exposure to BPA can affect neural development, leading to changes in behavior and neurodevelopmental disorders. These findings support the idea that gestational exposure to BPA is a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders.

Summary: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been used in clinical studies due to their versatility and low immunogenicity. However, safety issues remain a concern. Recently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from MSCs have been explored as an alternative. EVs are nano-sized particles released by cells and have similar biological functions as their origin cells. They carry bioactive molecules and facilitate tissue regeneration. EVs derived from adipose-derived MSCs (ADMSC) also have neuroprotective and neurogenesis effects. This study aimed to enhance the neural differentiation ability of ADMSC-derived EVs by investigating the neurogenic-differentiation process. The results showed that differentiated EVs (dEVs) obtained from neurogenesis conditioned media increased neurogenic ability by altering microRNA expression and cytokine composition. dEVs promoted neuronal differentiation of neural progenitor cells in vitro, indicating their potential in EV-based therapy for neurological disorders.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that alcohol exposure can induce glial production of neuroimmune factors in the central nervous system, particularly IL-6. While IL-6 is involved in hippocampal behaviors and synaptic plasticity, increased levels of IL-6 in transgenic mice did not affect LTP, but acute alcohol exposure led to neuroadaptive changes protecting LTP against alcohol-induced reduction. These findings point to IL-6-induced effects on presynaptic mechanisms as a key factor in the resistance of LTP to alcohol in hippocampus.

Summary: The central nervous system is composed of different types of cells derived from multipotent neural progenitors. Spatial position and temporal cues play important roles in determining the fate of neural progenitors and generating various cell populations. Notch signaling pathway has been found to be crucial in this process, particularly in the development of neocortex and hippocampus, as well as the corpus callosum and choroid plexus. Notch signaling controls the fate determination of projection neurons in the neocortex through the regulation of two microRNA clusters, including let-7, miR-99a/100, and miR-125b. The interplay between Notch and miRNAs is essential for the regulation of neocortical progenitor behaviors and neuron cell fate decisions.
