Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether indices of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) can stratify AF patients without a clinical history of HF. The results showed that the presence of LVDD was associated with adverse clinical outcomes and patients' perceived health status.

Summary: The study found that patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation exhibit early cardiac remodeling, characterized by increased left ventricular mass and left atrial enlargement. Although less than 10% of patients show diastolic dysfunction, there is a significant association with atrial fibrillation.

Summary: This study analyzed diastolic dysfunction in patients with heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) depending on left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF). The results showed that patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and AF had more severe diastolic dysfunction and higher left ventricular filling pressures compared to those with HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and AF.

Summary: Background evidence of diastolic dysfunction (DD) required for the diagnosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is elusive in atrial fibrillation (AF). Left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) may provide rhythm independent indications of DD. Our study aimed to find common LV/LA myocardial mechanics parameters to demonstrate DD using STE in patients with AF. Results showed that Vmin-I may be used to identify DD and assist in the diagnosis of HFpEF in patients with AF.

Summary: The study found that post-operative atrial fibrillation is associated with incident heart failure hospitalization among patients undergoing both cardiac and non-cardiac surgeries. These findings highlight the adverse prognostic impact of post-operative atrial fibrillation and suggest that it may be a marker for identifying patients with subclinical heart failure and those at elevated risk for heart failure.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and incidence of DD in patients with new-onset AF compared with SR. The results showed that patients with new-onset AF have high-risk features for HFpEF at diagnosis and accelerated progression in DD over time.

Summary: In this study, the Antwerp score was externally validated in a large European multi-centre cohort for predicting left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) recovery after atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation in patients with heart failure (HF). The score showed good discrimination and calibration, and patients with a score <2 had a higher probability of LVEF recovery. Responders also had a higher likelihood of positive ventricular remodelling, fewer HF hospitalizations, and lower mortality.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of coronary risk factors on left ventricular size and cardiac function using structure equation modeling. It found that each risk factor directly affected the shape of the heart. Managing risk factors is crucial in reducing the heart failure pandemic, as vascular risk and heart failure risk are likely to evolve simultaneously.

Summary: Intraoperative left ventricular diastolic dysfunction is closely associated with postoperative atrial fibrillation. Patients who develop postoperative atrial fibrillation are more likely to have abnormal left ventricular diastolic function. Baseline abnormal left ventricular diastolic function and pericardiotomy intervention are independently associated with postoperative atrial fibrillation.

Summary: Left atrial features are altered with diastolic dysfunction and may predict adverse outcomes. LA volume, emptying fraction, and strains are associated with the severity of DD. LA parameters, especially LAEF, are effective in predicting outcomes, even after adjusting for LV longitudinal strain.

Summary: The study found that using electronic health records can accurately predict the occurrence of atrial fibrillation, and that AF risk is associated with the incidence of stroke and heart failure. The use of these risk scores can help decision support and population health management efforts aimed at reducing AF-related morbidity.

Summary: The prevalence of left atrial thrombus (LAT) is higher in patients with heart failure (HF) compared to those without HF in atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (AF/AFl) patients. The presence of LAT increases with more advanced type of systolic dysfunction.

Summary: This study compared two post-processing methods, feature tracking (FT) and long-axis shortening (LAS), for assessing atrial function in healthy individuals and cardiovascular patients. The results showed similar measurements between the two approaches and demonstrated the ability to assess the progression of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and atrial fibrillation.
