Maternal herpesvirus infections during pregnancy may cause fetal and neonatal infections. We investigated the seroprevalence of five herpesviruses: cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and 2, varicella zoster virus (VZV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in randomly selected samples from pregnant Finnish women from the years 1992, 2002 and 2012. Over 20 years, the seroprevalences decreased significantly for CMV from 84.5% to 71.5% (p = 0.007) and HSV-1 from 69.5% to 45% (p < 0.001). The decrease in seroprevalence for HSV-2 (from 17.5% to 11%) was not statistically significant. The seroprevalence remained unchanged for VZV and EBV. The proportion of mothers with no antibodies to either HSV-1 or HSV-2 increased from 25.5% to 48% (p < 0.001). The seroprevalences for HSV-1 and HSV-2 increased in relation to age, which shows that women of childbearing age do contract primary HSV infections. Our findings indicate that a considerable proportion of women (48%) are at risk for primary HSV infection during pregnancy.

Human Protoparvovirus DNA and IgG in Children and Adults with and without Respiratory or Gastrointestinal Infections

Ushanandini Mohanraj, Maija Jokinen, Rajita Rayamajhi Thapa, Minna Paloniemi, Timo Vesikari, Maija Lappalainen, Eveliina Tarkka, Zaiga Nora-Krukle, Anda Vilmane, Kim Vettenranta, Charles Mangani, Sami Oikarinen, Yue-Mei Fan, Per Ashorn, Elina Vaisanen, Maria Soderlund-Venermo

Summary: Recent discoveries of three human protoparvoviruses, BuV, TuV, and CuV, in diarrheal stool samples have shed light on their association with gastrointestinal symptoms. The prevalence of CuV DNA was found to vary among different patient cohorts, with higher rates in older GE patients in Finland and in children from Latvia and Malawi. Detection of CuV DNA in GE patients without known causal pathogens suggests a potential role in gastrointestinal infections. Additionally, the first observation of CuV DNA in nasopharyngeal aspirates from children with respiratory tract infections highlights the potential broad spectrum of infections caused by protoparvoviruses.

Summary: The UEFA Euro 2020 tournament, originally scheduled for 2020, was postponed to June 11, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The travel activities related to the tournament resulted in a significant number of infections in Finland, primarily with the Delta variant, but no hospitalizations. The subsequent increase in Delta variant cases suggests that the tournament played a role in the rapid spread of this variant.

Summary: This study evaluated hearing outcomes at 3-4 years of age in mainly asymptomatic children with cCMV identified through saliva CMV-PCR screening. Unilateral hearing loss was relatively common, and a correlation between maternal CMV infection timing and childhood hearing loss was observed. Regular long-term follow-up of children with cCMV is crucial for early detection of late-onset hearing loss.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the specificity and sensitivity of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antigen in serum, and to describe the kinetics of antigenemia. The results showed high specificity and sensitivity of the test, providing accurate diagnosis of acute COVID-19.

Scent dogs in detection of COVID-19: triple-blinded randomised trial and operational real-life screening in airport setting

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the diagnostic accuracy of scent dogs in identifying people infected with SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that trained scent dogs can screen airport passenger samples with high accuracy, but their accuracy is lower for new variants. Scent dogs may present a valuable approach for high-throughput, rapid screening of large numbers of people.

Summary: This study compared the analytical performance of different commercial tests (Abbott Architect, Abbott Alinity, DiaSorin Liaison, and Siemens Atellica) used for serological screening of viral hepatitis and HIV in clinical laboratories. The results showed generally high agreement among the tests, but also identified some differences that can provide useful information for clinical laboratories in planning their workflows for screening and confirmation.

Summary: This study provides detailed information on the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in the air and on surfaces. It found that air contamination can occur even without aerosol-generating procedures. Additionally, appropriate infection control measures are necessary even after patients have developed antibodies.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence and outcome of severe bacterial infections in patients with COVID-19. In the sample, 6.8% of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients were diagnosed with severe bacterial infections. The range of bacteria was diverse, and patients with severe bacterial infections had longer hospital stays. The case-fatality rate was slightly higher in patients with bacterial infection, but the difference was not significant.

Summary: This study evaluated long-term vestibular function and hearing outcomes in children with congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV). It found that vestibular dysfunction was more common than sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in these children, suggesting that vestibular tests should be included in the follow-up protocol for cCMV.

Summary: Monkeypox virus was introduced to Finland in late May-early June 2022. Analysis of viral genome in a patient's sample showed a major variant with 3 lineage B.1.3-specific mutations and a minor variant with ancestral B.1 nucleotides. The results suggest ongoing evolution mediated by APOBEC3 enzyme or co-infection.
