China is the largest non-metallic mineral producer in the world and one of the key consumers of four major non-metallic mineral products, including cement, refractories, plate glass and ceramics. The non-metallic mineral products industry's rapid growth has brought about a large demand for energy. The present study provides an overview of China's non-metallic mineral products industry in terms of production, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. In this industry, the energy efficiency is relatively low and the level of carbon dioxide emission is much higher than developed countries' average. This study interprets the effects of some newly issued policies and analyses the influential factors in achieving energy conservation and emission reduction goals. It also discusses the prospects for saving energy and emission reduction in the industry. Retrofitting facilities and using new production technologies is imperative. Additionally, implementing market-based policies, promoting industrial transformation and effective international cooperation would help decrease carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption.

A game-theory analysis of the subsidy withdrawal policy for China's photovoltaic power generation industry

Jianliang Wang, Xu Geng, Hui Hu, Wanfang Xiong, Kelly Burns

Summary: China's feed-in-tariff policy has driven rapid growth in the photovoltaic power generation industry, but the quality has not improved alongside the expansion. High costs make it difficult to sustain competitiveness, leading to the need for a gradual withdrawal of subsidies. Uncertain subsidy exit policies may hinder R&D, and the government should provide a clear plan for subsidy reduction. In a monopoly market with government-controlled prices, social welfare is higher and total costs are lower compared to a competitive market, which may benefit from technical cooperation to lower costs and increase profits.

Cognitive Biases in Understanding the Influence of Shale Gas Exploitation: From Environmental and Economic Perspectives

Hui Hu, Jingtong Lin, Lu Liu, Yufeng Wu

Summary: There are common issues in evaluating the impact of shale gas development due to limitations in identification methods, data sources, and advancing exploitation technologies. Studies indicate that the influence of shale gas development on local water supply is not significant, depending on water management methods. Compared with conventional natural gas and other energy resources, freshwater consumption in shale gas exploration is decreasing with technological progress, while its long-term greenhouse gas emissions are greater.

New insights into trends and reasons for the gender pay gap in Urban China, 1988-2013

Chu-Yu Guo, Jiandong Wen, Hui Hu, Michael C. De Domenici

Summary: This study examines the long-run trends of gender pay gap (GPG) in urban China from 1988 to 2013 using the Chinese Household Income Project microdata. The research finds that the GPG has been fluctuating and expanding over time, with the average ratio of female to male earnings declining from 85.2% to 79.9%. Various analytical methods, such as OLS regressions, Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition, and Juhn-Murphy-Pierce decomposition, are employed to comprehensively analyze the factors contributing to the GPG. It is observed that conventional human capital variables explain only a small portion of the GPG by 2013, while differences in location, job characteristics, and unexplained factors play significant roles.

Using green technology for a better tomorrow: How enterprises and government utilize the carbon trading system and incentive policies

Hui Hu, Shaozhou Qi, Yuanzhi Chen

Summary: This study investigates the combined effects of the carbon trading system (CTS), stakeholder concerns, and innovation incentive policies on enterprises' green technology innovation. The findings suggest that enterprises' high level of concern with environmental information disclosure leads to a significant impact of CTS on green technology output and proportion. However, government concerns about decarbonization with CTS have uncertain effects on the dimensions of green technology innovation. It is found that fiscal subsidies and R&D funding under CTS are effective ways to improve enterprises' green technology output, but tax returns are the best way to improve all dimensions of green technology innovation. The study also concludes that inclusive innovation policies have a more significant combined effect of CTS compared to differentiated policies.
