Bruna Martins-Klein, Patricia A. Bamonti, Montgomery Owsiany, Aanand Naik, Jennifer Moye

Summary: This study investigated sources of stress related to cancer diagnosis and treatment, finding that older adults less frequently reported psychological uncertainty, social stress, and situational stress, but all age groups reported similar rates of physical stress. Older adults more often made spontaneous references to emotion regulation, and those who reported stress without emotion regulation in qualitative comments had higher emotional distress.

Measuring Adoption of Patient Priorities-Aligned Care Using Natural Language Processing of Electronic Health Records: Development and Validation of the Model

Javad Razjouyan, Jennifer Freytag, Lilian Dindo, Lea Kiefer, Edward Odom, Jaime Halaszynski, Jennifer W. Silva, Aanand D. Naik

Summary: This study developed and validated an NLP model to reliably document clinicians identifying patient priorities in the EHR as a measure of PPC adoption. The NLP model exhibited high accuracy, recall, and precision in both training and validation stages. Compared to a simple search term approach, the NLP model achieved higher precision in identifying PPC language in patient notes.

Palliative Care Impact on COVID-19 Patients Requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Astrid Grouls, Eberechi Nwogu-Onyemkpa, Danielle Guffey, Subhasis Chatterjee, James P. Herlihy, Aanand D. Naik

Summary: Among COVID-19 patients receiving ECMO, PCC may be associated with a shift to DNAR status, particularly with automatic PCC. This may have further impacts on length of stay, duration of time on ECMO, and end-of-life care plan.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the use of palliative care services during hospitalizations of adult patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). The study found that the use of palliative care services during SCD-related hospitalizations is increasing but remains low. Disparities associated with race and gender exist, highlighting the need for further research to guide comprehensive and equitable care for adult patients with SCD.

Summary: This study examined the association between emotional distress and metformin adherence, overall diabetes self-management, and glycemic control in adults with early type 2 diabetes. The results showed that depression symptoms and diabetes distress were significantly related to problematic diabetes self-management, but not to glycemic control.

Summary: This study used natural language processing to analyze social media content and assess the mental health conditions of people with insomnia after the COVID-19 outbreak. The study found that there was a higher likelihood of posting negative tweets about insomnia during the pandemic period and a higher probability of posting negative tweets after midnight. This research provides valuable information for understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people's sleep behavior.
