Summary: Chronic pancreatitis is often associated with alcohol use, smoking, or genetic risk factors. Common symptoms include recurrent abdominal pain or pancreatitis, and characteristic imaging findings include pancreatic stones, dilated ducts, and atrophy. Complications include pseudocysts, biliary strictures, exocrine and endocrine pancreatic insufficiency, bone loss, and pancreatic cancer.

Summary: Pain is common and significantly reduces quality of life in patients with chronic pancreatitis. This study aimed to classify the pain types in these patients, finding that patients with multiple pain types have worse health and quality of life scores. Further research is needed to identify biomarkers associated with specific pain types and predict responses to interventions.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate potential risk factors for endoscopic treatment failure in thoracopancreatic fistulae and explore the safety of surgical intervention. The study found that endoscopic treatment had a success rate of 42.3%. The anatomical characteristics of thoracopancreatic fistulae and certain factors in endoscopic treatment were associated with treatment outcomes.

Summary: This study analyzed clinicopathologic findings and outcomes of 1146 patients undergoing surgical treatment for chronic pancreatitis, identifying factors like the presence of inflammatory mass, dilated main pancreatic duct, severe calcifications, severe fibrosis, and ethanol-induced disease as strong prognostic factors for pain relief. The Chronic Pancreatitis Pain Relief Score was proposed as a predictive tool for identifying patients who will benefit most from surgery, with an overall pain relief rate of 79.8%.

Summary: This study examined the characteristics of pain in chronic pancreatitis (CP) and the differences between CP and chronic primary pain (CPP). Constant pain in CP was found to be associated with poorer outcomes. CP patients with constant pain showed similarities to some patients with CPP, indicating potential shared mechanisms.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the surgical treatment strategies for chronic pancreatitis (CP) in the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. The results showed that only 7% of CP patients underwent pancreatic surgery, with 51% of them undergoing surgery for chronic pain. After surgery, 47% of the patients were pain-free and half of the patients reported no pain.

Summary: This study investigated postoperative opioid usage among patients undergoing breast surgeries and recommended a set number of opioid pills for discharge. The results indicate that most breast surgery patients can be discharged with fewer than 10 opioid pills, except under special circumstances. Utilization of a standardized discharge opioids protocol can effectively reduce the number of opioids prescribed to patients.

Summary: This study aims to provide recommendations for elucidating the anatomy and surgical approaches to minimally invasive pancreatoduodenectomy (MIPD). Through a comprehensive literature search and Delphi voting process, experts developed six recommendations with at least 75% consensus. Preoperative evaluation of anatomical variations and vascular branching patterns, as well as intraoperative confirmation of vascular course based on anatomical landmarks, were highlighted as crucial steps for safe and reliable MIPD.

Summary: Simple hepatic cysts are fluid-filled epithelial lined cavities that arise from aberrant bile duct cells. They can be diagnosed using diagnostic modalities such as ultrasonography (US), CT, and MRI. US is the most useful tool for diagnosis, while CT and MRI can be used to differentiate cysts from neoplasms or infections. Symptomatic cysts can be treated with laparoscopic fenestration or percutaneous aspiration.

Summary: Palliative surgery for obstructive jaundice is crucial for improving the quality of life in cancer patients. While cholecyst-jejunostomy may be effective for end-stage cancer patients in the short term, long-term complications like bile congestion and cholecystitis may arise. However, it remains a suitable quick and easy option for emergency patients with a limited life expectancy.
